Chapter 2 Little Potato
Wu Zhiyun, who was following behind, was hiding behind a dead tree stump not far away. Looking at Wu Yuetang in front of him squatting on the ground and digging the soil, his brows couldn't help but frowned more and more.
"Little sister, is she going to dig up dirt to eat? No matter how hungry she is, she can't really eat dirt."
Wu Yuetang was squatting on the ground busying herself, completely unaware that someone had thought of her in that way.
"Hey, this little potato is hidden quite deep." Wu Yuetang had dug the ground in front of him quite deep before he found the so-called wild little potato.
She picked one up and observed it in her hand. It was not easy to grow wild potatoes in such poor land. Although they were a little small, there were many of them.
Wu Yuetang was very happy when she saw so many small potatoes in the pit that had not been dug out yet.
Although I haven't eaten at home yet, I read in a book before that this family has to eat thin rice porridge every day. The fields have not produced any harvest for many years, and the family relies on bran and vegetables and brown rice porridge that is as thin as a bowl of water for food.
You can take these potatoes home, steam them, and make mashed potatoes, which can improve your diet to some extent.
Wu Yuetang dug and threw things into the backpack at the same time. Before she knew it, the whole backpack was almost full. She lifted the backpack with both hands and found it was really heavy.
The original owner was small, only thirteen years old, and had not worked for many years, so he had little strength in his hands and it took a lot of effort for him to carry the backpack.
After finally carrying him on his back, he turned around and was almost scared by the person who suddenly appeared behind him.
"Oh my god, you scared me."
Wu Yuetang gasped, patted his chest, and rolled his eyes in annoyance at Wu Zhiyun who suddenly appeared in front of him.
"You walk without making any noise?"
Facing Wu Yuetang's accusation, Wu Zhiyun chuckled, rubbed his nose embarrassedly, and then looked at the backpack behind her. Because it was covered with a layer of cloth, he couldn't see clearly what was inside.
Wu Zhiyun frowned again when he saw the deep pit dug on the ground in front of him.
"Little sister, no matter how hungry you are, you can't dig dirt to eat."
"What do you mean by digging? You dig the soil and eat it."
Wu Yuetang was speechless and rolled her eyes again. She ignored him and walked down the mountain with her backpack on her back.
Seeing that she had already come down the mountain, Wu Zhiyun hurriedly followed her.
"You're not digging, so why are you digging such a deep hole?"
He just looked at the pit. Although it was not big, it was still quite deep, estimated to be half a meter deep. If it was not digging soil, then what was in the little sister's backpack?
"Of course it's food."
Wu Yuetang had no idea what Wu Zhiyun was thinking, and didn't want to explain too much, so she just answered casually.
Wu Zhiyun got anxious when he heard this and immediately ran to Wu Yuetang to stop him and tried to persuade her anxiously.
"Little sister, don't be so stubborn. This mountain has been searched many times by the villagers. Everything that should be eaten and shouldn't be eaten has been cleared out, not to mention food. If you really can't find any food, it's okay. There is still some food at home."
Wu Yuetang stopped and looked at Wu Zhiyun. He was only a year older than the original owner, and his height was not much different. Besides his two brothers, he was the only laborer in the family. Perhaps because they were about the same age, when the family disliked the original owner, Wu Zhiyun was the only one who cared about her.
When Wu Yuetang saw his innocent eyes, she knew that he really cared about her, so she pursed her lips and spoke.
"Third brother, don't worry. What I found must be edible. But now that I'm outside, it's not convenient for me to take it out, lest it be coveted by someone with ulterior motives. You'll know when we get home."
Wu Zhiyun looked at her confident expression and half believed it in his heart, but when he thought of her previous appearance, he couldn't help but worry.
On the way back, Wu Zhiyun was completely unaware of Wu Yuetang's worry. Perhaps because she was so used to carrying the backpack, she didn't even notice the weight of the backpack, which weighed nearly ten pounds. Along the way, Wu Yuetang's steps became lighter and lighter.
As soon as I opened the gate and took two steps, I heard the old woman's scolding.
"She's such an ungrateful bastard, she doesn't even work, and I don't know where she went. She hasn't come back yet. If I had known this money-loser was going to treat us so badly, I would never have given birth to her. It really makes me so angry."
Li Qiuniang, also known as Old Lady Wu, was sitting on a bamboo chair in the yard, picking the few wild vegetables and complaining all the time.
Zhou Yulan, the eldest daughter-in-law, who was sitting opposite Li, was grinding a little bit of dried beans in her hand and listening to her mother-in-law's scolding, her face full of embarrassment.
Wu Yuetang glanced around the yard but didn't see Wu Shoutian and his two brothers. They must have gone out to work. She ignored Li's scolding, walked past her with her backpack on her back, and went straight to the stove.
Water is very scarce these days, so it is impossible to wash the potatoes one by one. I can only peel them and steam them in a pot.
When Mrs. Li saw Wu Yuetang walking straight towards the kitchen with a basket on her back, she thought she was going to look for food again. She was so angry that she threw away the wild vegetables in her hand and rushed over with a broom.
"You money-loser, you're looking for food again, right? Your father and your brother haven't finished their work yet, and you're the only one thinking about eating?"
The broom, which was originally raised high, was lowered after seeing Wu Yuetang pour all the potatoes into the basin. The words he wanted to continue scolding were swallowed back into his stomach.
Zhou Yulan, who came running after, was also dumbfounded when she saw the whole basin full of small potatoes.
"Tang'er, where did you get these potatoes?"
Zhou Yulan was shocked. The surrounding food had long been swept away by the villagers. Where did she get the potatoes? And so many of them, they looked like they weighed more than ten pounds.
Li looked back at her eldest daughter-in-law who had followed her. The two of them looked at each other, not knowing what to say. She also began to suspect that Wu Yuetang had stolen these from other people's fields.
"Don't let your imagination run wild. I dug these out from the hill ahead. If you don't believe me, you can ask Third Brother."
Without even looking up, Wu Yuetang knew what the two men were thinking of her. There was no need to feel wronged or argue, so she squatted on the floor, sorting the potatoes in the basin. Then, she found a thinner knife in the kitchen and began to peel them.
"Third brother, is what this girl said true? Was this really dug in the mountains?"
Li couldn't wait to pull Wu Zhiyun, who had followed into the yard, over and pointed in the direction of the stove. Her tone was full of urgency, as if she wanted to prove that her idea was correct.
Wu Zhiyun nodded. "Indeed, my little sister dug it. She dug the hole half a meter deep. I never thought potatoes could grow in such a deep hole."
