Chapter 15: Packing
"What's going on? Tang girl, what are you doing in the chicken coop?"
The first one to come over was Wu Shoutian. When he got closer and saw the eggs in her hand, he understood. It turned out that his daughter had forced the eggs out and scared the chickens.
"It's okay, Dad. I'll just make breakfast for everyone with those few eggs."
Wu Yuetang chuckled after saying this, and without caring what his father had to say, he ran back to the kitchen. The oil in the pan was already hot, so he fried eight poached eggs and placed them on a plate beside him.
There was a lot of picked vegetables in the bamboo basket next to the stove. Wu Yuetang took a few leaves, blanched them in hot water and took them out.
I used a knife to cut the baked pancakes in half, making eight pancakes in total, and secretly took out a bowl of mixed sauce that I had made before from the refrigerator in the space.
Brush the dough with sauce, place a vegetable leaf on each, add a poached egg, and close the pancake.
Well... the low-end version of Roujiamo is ready, except there is no meat.
By the time all the family members came out, the porridge was ready.
"Sister-in-law, please help me put breakfast on the table."
Zhou and Chen never expected that they would have breakfast when they woke up today. When they woke up earlier this morning, Tang'er and the third brother had already disappeared.
Two people came over with smiles on their faces, one holding a roujiamo and the other holding a large bowl of porridge, and walked towards the dining table in the yard.
Wu Yuetang quickly put the mixed sauce back into the space and walked towards the dining table.
The eldest and second brothers laughed so hard that their big teeth were exposed. They wiped the water off their hands and stretched their necks to look at the food on the table.
"What delicious food did my little sister make this morning?"
Wu Yongqiao sat at the dining table with a grin on his face. He served himself a bowl of rice porridge without any hesitation, then took a steamed bun, stuffed it into his mouth and started eating.
"Wow, this is so delicious, little sister, what did you put in this steamed bun? It smells so good."
"Ah, that's the soybean paste at home."
Wu Yuetang unconsciously avoided his gaze and lowered her head to drink a sip of porridge from her bowl. She didn't want to tell this family where the seasoning came from yet, not knowing their true nature. After all, this was a cannon fodder family, and the book didn't describe them in detail. If any of them turned out to be bad guys, it would ruin her plans.
Wu Yuetang was thinking in her mind without stopping to drink the porridge.
"Tang'er, have you used up all the eggs in the chicken coop?"
Li looked at the fried eggs in each steamed bun and counted them to find that there were eight of them. Her heart ached.
"Mom, these seven or eight chickens lay eggs almost every day, and we're leaving here in half a month. We can't pack too much for a family move, and it's so hot right now. These eggs will definitely go bad if we don't eat them. It's better to eat them than to waste them."
Li wanted to say something, but then she thought about the long journey from Qingshi Town to Yingtian Prefecture, and she probably wouldn't be able to carry too much luggage along the way.
She looked at the steamed bun in her hand with some heartache, but still ate it. Wu Yuetang felt relieved when she saw Li eating the steamed bun.
Wu Zhiyun got up a little late today. When he came to the dining table, he saw a lot of chicken feathers hanging on his little sister's body. He couldn't help but hold his stomach and laughed out loud.
"Hahahahaha, little sister, what kind of hairstyle is this? Hahahaha, I'm dying of laughter!"
Wu Yuetang stood up and hit Wu Zhiyun with chopsticks. The chopsticks hit him on the head and the laughter stopped.
"Little sister, stop hitting me. I won't laugh anymore."
After Wu Zhiyun's action, the atmosphere in the yard became much better, and the family ate breakfast happily.
The Wu family in Dayao Village was having a happy meal, but the atmosphere at the head of the Wu family in Maiduo Village was not so good.
"Mom, don't be angry, drink the porridge while it's hot."
The second daughter-in-law, Liu, brought over some hot porridge. Although it was called porridge, the rice soup inside was almost gone, and you couldn't see much rice at all.
"How can we drink this? Why can our family only drink this kind of porridge, while the eldest family can eat meat and even pancakes?"
Seeing the porridge that was as thin as water, Old Mrs. Wu and Mrs. Liu became angry for no reason and almost overturned the bowl.
"What? You guys went to make a scene yesterday, but you didn't get anything?"
When Old Man Wu heard his wife say this, he knew that his fuss yesterday was fruitless. He snorted coldly and drank some porridge.
"I told you not to go yesterday, but you didn't listen and insisted on going. Don't you know who that old lady Sun is? You believed her, and now you've gained nothing and have been laughed at by the Dayao Village."
Old Man Wu was also angry. He believed that the eldest son was the most filial son, but he didn't expect that it had only been a short time since the family was divided and the eldest son's family would let a little girl make the decision.
"Old man, you don't know that Wu Yuetang, that loser, actually hit us with a stick. How could we stand to be beaten by a little girl?"
As she spoke, Liu began to complain, and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes with her sleeves.
Wu Shouyi, the second son of the Wu family, saw his father's expression darken and knew something was going to happen, so he immediately walked over and sat next to Old Man Wu.
"Dad, you see, it's usually our family that takes care of you and mom. Have you ever seen my eldest brother and his family come to visit us? Not to mention the visit, they didn't even tell us that the cat's eye grass could be sold for money. They just watched helplessly as our Wu family couldn't afford to eat."
As Wu Lao Er spoke, he looked at Old Man Wu's expression and continued to add fuel to the fire.
"It costs a lot of money for us Qingtian to go to school, and the food at home is barely enough to eat. Look at my eldest brother and his family, they eat pancakes and meat buns at home, and they don't think about you two at all."
The second daughter-in-law, Liu, stood silently at the side, but she was secretly proud of herself when she saw her husband's ability to sow discord. She knew that as long as her father-in-law gave in, he would go to the eldest son's family and get something.
Old Man Wu listened to what Old Man Wu said, and was thinking in his heart what excuse he should find to go to the old man's house and see if it was really as Mrs. Sun said, that they could eat and drink enough every day.
"Okay, okay, let's find a reason to go to the old house in the next two days."
Hearing what Old Man Wu said, the other three people couldn't help but smile. With Daddy's help, they didn't believe that the old family wouldn't give some money to honor their parents. As long as the money was in their hands, it would be theirs.
Wu Laoer and Liu almost lost their sight from laughing, and immediately sat back in their seats to eat.
After the Wu family finished breakfast, the eldest and second sisters-in-law took the initiative to clean up the dishes and the kitchen, and then went into the house to busy themselves with needlework. According to Mrs. Li's instructions, the embroidery work had to be finished quickly and sold before fleeing the famine.
Li went back to her room and rummaged through the wardrobe, looking for some commonly used clothes, as well as sheets and quilts. These had to be prepared in advance and packed tightly, and then placed at the bottom of the bag.
Thinking that she would have to stay in the snow-capped mountains for a year, Wu Yuetang hurried into Li's house.
"Mom, let's bring some extra cotton clothes. Even though it's summer now, we don't know what will happen along the way. Let's bring some just in case."
Hearing her daughter say that she wanted to bring more cotton clothes, Li frowned. They all took the main road when fleeing famine, and with so many people from the village walking together, what big thing could happen?
"Why bring so many cotton-padded clothes? They take up so much space. It's better to bring more food."
"Mom, trust me, bringing some extra cotton-padded clothes and quilts will definitely be helpful. Don't worry about the food for the journey, I will feed you all along the way and will definitely not let you go hungry."
Wu Yuetang patted his chest and spoke confidently, afraid that Li would not believe him, and even took out his purse and shook it in front of him.
"Mom, look, I still have over two hundred coins left. I'll go pick some herbs in a couple of days and sell them in town, so I can save some money. Don't worry, just listen to me and bring some extra winter clothes and bedding."
Li looked at the purse in her hand. It seemed that she really did not lie. She felt relieved. It turned out that her daughter was so good. She had wanted to kill her for a living. Now she thought that it was fortunate that her daughter did not die, otherwise she would regret it now.
