Chapter 56 Asking for the Reason
The Li Mansion was brightly lit.
Inside Ruixing Hall, doctors were treating the severely injured Li Yuanxiu. Zhao and Qiao were both guarding the door, their faces etched with suppressed grief and fear.
After an unknown amount of time, the tightly closed door finally opened. Qiao Yunyue, looking exhausted, walked out with his men. He nodded slightly to his sister before respectfully bowing to Zhao.
"Your Highness, I have fulfilled your mission. Your Excellency's injuries have stabilized. You must rest and recuperate for the next period of time."
Zhao, her nerves tense, didn't let out a sigh of relief until Doctor Qiao finished speaking. Her legs gave way as she relaxed, but Qiao, standing beside her, grabbed her. She grabbed Qiao's arm, tears streaming down her face.
"Sister, thank you for finding a way for the boss to survive."
"What are you thanking me for? The eldest brother grew up under my watch. How could I watch him die?"
There was an indelible worry between Mrs. Qiao's furrowed brows, so Mrs. Zhao tried to comfort her softly.
"I've asked the third brother to take all the best fighters in the mansion. He will definitely be able to find the fourth brother! Don't worry too much..."
Before he finished speaking, Qiao's personal maid Qing Liu came running over to report.
"Master, the Third Young Master has found the Fourth Young Master!"
"How is the fourth brother? Is he seriously injured?"
While asking, Qiao lifted her skirt and ran out, not forgetting to turn back and explain.
"Sister, you look after the eldest brother. I'll go check on the fourth brother!"
"I'll go take a look too."
"Just stay here first, and we'll talk later."
"Then don't be too anxious, slow down..."
"knew!"
Qiao quickly walked out of Ruixing Hall, asked where the two little brothers were, and took her cousin with her and hurried to her own Ruijing Hall.
The mother and her two children met successfully. Qiao Yunyue carefully examined the fourth child several times, looking left and right. After confirming that the injuries were not fatal and had been properly treated with medicine and bandages, Qiao collapsed into a chair exhausted.
Although she was stubborn and said nothing, the obvious fear and worry on her face still moved Li Laosi.
"Mom, now you know how important I am to you, right? Next time, please don't hit me so easily. What if you really hurt me? Wouldn't you be heartbroken?"
The son came over to her and acted coquettishly. Mrs. Qiao slapped him a few times in an angry tone, but her slaps were so light and forceless.
"The scar hasn't even healed yet and you've already forgotten the pain. You're so dishonest all day long. I wonder what's going to happen to you in the future?"
"Why can't it be okay? Anyway, I have you and my father to support me from above, my brother to help me in the middle, and my children to support me in the future. I will enjoy the best of life in this life!"
"You are really promising!"
She nodded at her youngest son unhappily, causing him to shake his big head and try to get closer to his mother's shoulder, but was ruthlessly pushed away.
"Li Chengxiu, how old are you? Why are you still pestering me like this? Go back to your yard and tidy up. Eat when it's time to eat and sleep when it's time to sleep. I want to talk to your brother about something."
"If you two have something I can't listen to, just say it. What's wrong with me just listening in?
Okay, I'll go, go, go, Mom, don't do anything!"
After watching the unruly creature run off, Mrs. Qiao asked her trusted maids, Qing Yang and Qing Liu, to guard the door. She sat expressionlessly at the head of the table, staring at her eldest son without saying a word.
The room was silent, save for the occasional crackling of candlelight. Li Yanxiu knelt silently before his mother, his face expressionless.
The confrontation between mother and son was only interrupted by the cry of a passing bird outside the window.
"Why do you do that?"
"Mom, it's not me."
In response to her eldest son's denial, Mrs. Qiao did not say whether she believed it or not, but simply brought up the old matter again.
"Back then, your father and I were trapped in Guangping Prefecture, at the end of our rope. It was only with the Zhao family's support, providing us with food, money, and soldiers, that we were able to escape this life-or-death crisis. Did you know that?"
"I know!"
Li Yanxiu raised his head and looked his mother in the eye.
"But I know even more clearly that this was earned by you giving up your position as the legal wife! This was earned at the cost of my eldest sister's life!"
"shut up!"
Qiao slammed the table hard.
"I know Zhao Yu'e's character well. Tell me honestly, when I followed your father to fight outside, and you were left at home, did she take good care of you?"
Li Yanxiu couldn't say no in good conscience, so he could only remain silent. His mother sighed deeply.
"I know you're unwilling to accept this, and in fact, I'm unwilling to accept this either. But do you think Zhao Yu'e is willing to accept this? Is your father willing to accept this?
Everything is a matter of fate, and nothing is our own. All the choices we make in this world are our own decisions, and we cannot blame others.
Zhao Yu'e has not given birth to any children in all these years because she felt guilty towards me for not taking good care of your elder sister. That is why she only has your elder brother in this life.
Third Brother, I've fought with her openly and covertly for half my life, and we've also supported each other for half my life. I understand her character better than you do."
The only sound in the whole room was Qiao's low murmur.
"I know you didn't arrange this assassination, but you must have gotten wind of it when it happened. Otherwise, how can you explain your escape?"
"Mom, is this how you look at your son?"
Li Yanxiu's eyes were filled with anger.
"I was able to escape unscathed, one reason being that the fourth brother was there to shield me, and the other reason being,"
He gritted his teeth and spoke in a very low voice.
"Among those two groups of masked men, the leader of one group was my cousin. I recognized her."
“…Qiao and Chu?”
"right."
Qiao's breathing became a little faster, and he slammed the table again with gritted teeth.
"What is your uncle trying to do? This brainless guy has been disobedient since he was a child and has completely disrupted my entire chess game!"
"Mom, my uncle also wants to fight for you."
"I know!
But you can use open tactics, but you can't use shady tactics. This is the tacit understanding between her and me for so many years. Otherwise, the Zhao family would not be a pushover!
Where do you think the masked men on the other side came from? If Qiao Yuchu could bring people to kill your eldest brother, then couldn't the Zhao family bring people to kill you and the fourth brother? "
Li Yanxiu also thought of this and could only remain silent again. Qiao stood up and closed her eyes helplessly before opening them again.
"You should go back and rest. Your elder brother has suffered a great loss this time, and his life span will probably be shortened. You should have some idea of this. I will go to Ruixing Hall again."
"mother!"
"Why are you yelling? Since you've been defeated, you better be straightforward and honest! We have to give in this time and think about the future."
After Qiao finished speaking, she walked away decisively.
