Slater's new work is called "Nirvana"
The plot is quite simple, and the ending is also a traditional happy ending.
The male protagonist played by Allen is a Latin dance teacher. With his impressive resume, he teaches in an aristocratic high school that everyone is scrambling to get into.
At the beginning of the film, he encountered a series of things and fell into the lowest point of his life. His father went bankrupt, his mother was pregnant, and he himself was fired because he refused to compromise with the school and lost his well-paid job.
The family had to move from the bustling metropolis to their grandparents' hometown, a small town with inconvenient transportation.
Unlike his blindly optimistic parents, the protagonist left his familiar friends and school and was unfamiliar with everything here.
He applied again as a music teacher at the town's high school - yes, there was not even a need for a Latin dance teacher here.
The school was very different from the schools he had attended before. It was old and small. There was even only an old piano in the music classroom. The students all had their own problems.
He originally thought that he would live a mediocre life like this, but unexpectedly he rediscovered his dream here. After experiencing a series of twists and turns, he danced to Blackpool with a female dance partner he met by chance and became a champion.
When he won the championship and was filled with honor, countless invitations came to him, even his former school extended an olive branch to him again.
Gu Qingchi plays Irene's former dance partner, a supporting character who doesn't even have a name in the synopsis, but is responsible for pushing the development of the plot.
He is a problem student who has been unable to graduate, and happens to be in the protagonist's class.
On the first day the male protagonist arrived at school, she ignored him and left the classroom.
He was the first to give up Latin and abandon his female dance partner.
This forced her female dance partner to look for a suitable candidate everywhere before she found the male protagonist, hoping to get his help, but in the end it was fruitless. However, in the process of actively trying to win back his former male dance partner, she discovered the male protagonist's talent in Latin.
The male and female protagonists tentatively formed a group, but they became the dark horse in the Blackpool that year and jumped all the way to the championship.
Allen's scene is about to begin. At Slater's request, he has not shaved for the past two days to show the decadent and depressed state of the male protagonist.
Slater likes to be meticulous when filming, and while producing beautiful shots, the budget is also burning like crazy.
So this crew is actually quite poor. The male and female protagonists don't get any special treatment. The entire crew shares one makeup artist, and no matter how big or small the role is, they all line up to have their makeup done.
After all, they wasted a lot of the budget on props and renting venues.
In this case, director Slater had to juggle multiple roles and repeatedly confirm the actors' status before filming.
It is common to fail to explain clearly to actors and then demonstrate it on stage in person.
Now, he is shooting a scene that requires shots of many dancers. He is telling a female dancer what angle he wants, what feeling he wants, and where he wants his eyes to look.
After explaining it several times, the female dancer was still a little confused, so Slater started to perform it himself with quite seductive postures. The male dancer opposite him almost laughed several times but held it back.
Gu Qingchi sat on the sofa next to him, with one leg on his knee, leaning back against the sofa, and his hands resting on the sofa.
This action of his was also requested by Slater. Although there was still a long time before Gu Qingchi's part, Slater had already begun to want to create an ideal image for Gu Qingchi.
Maybe it was because of his temperament, the action should have been very arrogant, but when he did it, he seemed calmer and more obedient. Because he sat so straight, he even looked righteous.
Looking at Slater at this moment, he couldn't help but smile slightly.
After Slater finished speaking, he turned around and saw Gu Qingchi smiling.
He looked Gu Qingchi up and down.
"Why can you do this action like this? It's not like this. Be more arrogant and don't sit so straight. You are a playboy now, not a president supervising the work of poor employees."
Gu Qingchi tried to adjust it several times, but Slater finally gave up. He put his hand on his forehead, looking as if he couldn't bear to look at it.
"Don't leave before you finish work. I want to talk to you."
It was already evening when we finished work, and the staff were coming and going in the venue to clean up.
Slater hurriedly signaled Gu Qingchi to follow him.
Finally, Slater took Gu Qingchi to the outer field - a cheap entertainment venue that could be entered by paying a small entrance fee.
It was just getting dark now, and it was far from the time for the Queen's Ballroom to start doing business.
The waiters have not yet arrived and are running back and forth clearing tables, preparing to welcome guests for the evening.
But now people can enter, and there are already some young people gathering in twos and threes, waiting for the real carnival moment to arrive in the evening.
The band began to play soothing music.
Slater found a random table.
"Sit. Oh, God, you don't have to sit like I taught you. Just relax."
Gu Qingchi was originally very reserved and sat very seriously according to Slater's instructions. After hearing this, he breathed a sigh of relief and sat up straight.
Xie Luyu had taught him a little bit, and Gu Qingchi had done well at the time, but he was like a stupid student who just memorized the answers by rote, while the examiner changed the way of testing.
Slater is indeed a headache, as the character of Gu Qingchi is actually quite complicated if you look into it carefully.
If the main plot is the protagonist's success, then there is also a hidden plot, which is the character played by Gu Qingchi's destruction.
There is no such scene in the entire film, but the few clips that exist all hint at this incident.
He is the only Chinese in this school full of black and white students, and this identity is controversial enough.
He has fair skin and is incredibly handsome. Although his attendance rate is shockingly low, he has become famous in school just based on his face.
He was a problem student. He drank, smoked, and kept to himself. He was very adaptable to the dark life. He hung out in nightclubs and squandered himself there.
He indulged in pleasure and made no secret of his desires.
When the heroine asked him in disbelief how he could become like this.
He laughed until his back bent and tears were about to flow, and then he told the heroine.
"I've always been like this, sweetheart. Don't be so naive. Go back to your glass greenhouse and cry with your baby."
In fact, he is five years younger than the heroine.
Gu Qingchi is too well-behaved and too restrained, so he cannot act out such a lively and passionate image.
Slater thought for a while, biting his pipe, and suddenly asked.
"Can you drink?"
Gu Qingchi nodded.
He asked again.
"So do you smoke?"
This time Gu Qingchi shook his head.
He had never smoked, but had only smelled the smell of tobacco on other people. He even hated that smell a little bit, and it made him feel suffocated.
Xie Luyu was a heavy smoker. In their line of work, the pressure was actually quite high and many people were addicted to smoking. Xie Luyu gradually became addicted as well.
Later he found that Gu Qingchi didn't like the smell of cigarettes very much, so he rarely smoked. If he smoked occasionally, he would not only stay away from it, but also take a shower to remove the smell. Sometimes, when he didn't have time, he would spray himself with a full set of air freshener.
Slater ordered two bottles of wine and bought a pack of cigarettes from the waiter. They were the most common types on the street and were affordable for the characters in the movie.
Slater poured a glass of wine first, handed it over, and motioned Gu Qingchi to drink it. Gu Qingchi took it and smiled a little. He had never drunk alcohol during his work.
He tilted his head back and his Adam's apple moved twice, but there was no sound and the glass of wine was quickly finished.
Slater nodded in satisfaction.
He handed Gu Qingchi another cigarette.
"Try?"
Gu Qingchi bit it in his mouth hesitantly.
Slater lit his lighter and went forward to light him.
Gu Qingchi lowered his head and moved closer to the lighter in Slater's hand.
Slater guides Gu Qingchi.
"Breathe it in, don't let it burn itself."
Gu Qingchi obediently took a deep breath, and smoke came out all of a sudden. He coughed a few times, lowered his head, and couldn't control his tears flowing out, with a cigarette still in his mouth.
The cigarette has gone out.
Slater moved the lighter closer to Gu Qingchi again and spoke in a gentle and persuasive manner.
"Everyone has that moment at the beginning. Good boy, let's try again."
Gu Qingchi had already taken the cigarette out of his mouth and held it between two fingers, but when he heard this, he bit it back again. His attitude towards studying was quite serious.
As soon as he brought the cigarette to the fire, it was taken away from his mouth.
Colenso put one leg on the sofa where Gu Qingchi was sitting, half-knelt with one leg on the back of the sofa, and surrounded Gu Qingchi from behind.
He was just at the table behind Gu Qingchi and didn't know how long he had been listening.
Behind him were a few friends, both black and white. They all stood up at this moment, standing behind Colenso, looking at him with unfriendly eyes.
Colenso looked at Slater.
He has seen a lot of people like this. Their stuff is filled with ingredients and they specifically target people for traps. It's free at first, and then when you can't leave, they will keep sucking blood from you. Even the eight-year-old girl next door to Colenso knows this trick.
Only rich kids who have never seen the world would be fooled into this trap.
Colenso held the cigarette snatched from Gu Qingchi in his hand, shrugged his nose and said in a bad tone.
"Old fox, put away your little tricks here. If you don't want to get beaten, follow the rules."
The guy with dreadlocks behind Colenso, with his hands in the pockets of his denim jacket, also spoke. He spoke very quickly and rhythmically, like he was rapping.
"Where are you originally from? How dare you mess around in front of our boss? You dare to come here to pee without knowing the rules of the Queen Ballroom. People like you in the past are either in jail or helping to clean up garbage in the community."
Being surrounded by such a group of people, Slater was not afraid at all. Instead, he was quite excited. He pointed at Colenso and spoke to Gu Qingchi.
Slater had already written extended biographies for each character.
"That's the ruthlessness and arrogance of that character. He's the only Asian in the school. He was a well-behaved kid at first, but then he changed. He earned his dignity bit by bit."
