Chapter 78: Chaos

On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the snow finally stopped.

It was freezing outside, the water was freezing, the road was completely frozen, and it would slip if you stepped on it. No one dared to go out.

People from the school didn't come over, and people from the Song family didn't go over either.

Lan Yu wanted to go and see Granny Lan, but just as he was about to leave, Liu Xue pulled him back and scolded him, "Isn't Granny Lan better now? There are people taking care of her at the academy. It won't be a problem if you don't see her for a day or two."

"It's windy and icy outside now. What if you fall and catch a cold? Do I have to take special care of you?"

Lan Yu knelt on the kang, his hands folded on his knees, his head lowered, like a wounded puppy.

Seeing that he didn't say anything, Liu Xue snorted, asked Bai Shu to keep an eye on him, and went to the next room.

Song Yuehua looked outside through the window and thought, the snow was already unbearable, and the melting snow would be even worse. She didn't know what would happen to the potatoes in the field.

After two days of freezing, there was a knock on the door.

When Liu Xue opened the door, she saw Duan Yidao. He was carrying a shovel and had shoveled away all the ice on the road from the Song family to the school. Master Yi followed behind him, carrying a large bucket and spreading wood ash on the road.

"Is there any stove ash left at home?" Duan Yidao asked with a sigh.

It turned out that the village had organized a team to shovel ice and clear the road.

Liu Xue nodded and carried two bags of stove ash out from the woodshed.

The road from home to school has been cleared, so there will be no problem traveling back and forth. Liu Xue told Lan Yu about this immediately.

After Song Yuehua found out, she asked Liu Xue to go with her to see if there was anything missing at the school.

It was not until noon that the two returned. Liu Xue said, "Everything is fine, but those two families have burned their kangs. They promised to replenish the firewood before school starts."

Song Yuehua nodded.

Liu Xue continued, "Those two families don't get along very well. I heard from Madam Xia that they even had a fight before."

"Eh..." Song Yuehua suddenly became interested and said seriously, "Tell me more!"

Liu Xue wanted to laugh.

Before the Zong and Ren families moved in, they had agreed that men and women would live in two separate rooms.

There were four people living in the man's room, including Old Man Ren and his son Ren Dahai, 16-year-old Zong Yi and 6-year-old nephew Zong Bai.

Logically speaking, the kang bed is wide enough for four people to sleep on it without anyone being able to touch anyone else.

It just so happened that Old Man Ren was used to being powerful and domineering at home, and when he came here, he took advantage of his seniority and always woke up the two boys from the Zong family in the middle of the night to add firewood.

It's okay once or twice, but who can stand being woken up all the time? Besides, Zong Bai is only 6 years old, and the older man doesn't move, but he still has to order the little kid around.

Zong Yi discussed with Old Man Ren, "Master Ren, Xiaobai is only 6 years old. It's not appropriate for us two to always have to get up to add firewood. How about we share it equally between the two families?"

"What do you mean by 'equal'?" Old Man Ren cursed. "I'm so old. If I get up in the middle of the night and fall, can you afford to pay for it?"

Zong Yi nodded and said, "We can respect the elderly, but you must also love the young. Uncle Dahai and I will share the work of adding firewood at night."

Originally, at this point, the task was not assigned to Old Man Ren, and the matter was easily resolved.

But old man Ren just couldn't swallow this anger.

He said stubbornly, "He is just a kid, how can he compare with me? I have eaten more salt than he has walked. What's wrong with adding firewood a few times? I can let him work because I respect him!"

Zong Yi frowned and said calmly, "What do you mean?"

"What do you mean?" Old Man Ren said self-righteously, "I'm teaching you how to be a good person!"

Zong Yi didn't say anything, and Old Man Ren's vanity was instantly greatly satisfied.

"Uncle..." Xiao Zongbai was so angry.

Zong Yi said calmly, "Although our father is dead, our mother is still alive. You don't need to worry about how to live. Since the two families can't get along living together, let's live in separate rooms."

Old Man Ren's expression froze. He didn't expect this kid to be so ungrateful. There were only 4 people in the Zong family, and 6 people in their family in total.

Although it is possible to sleep on a kang, it is not as spacious as it is now.

"Your father died early, didn't anyone teach you the difference between men and women?" Old Man Ren cursed as he sat on the kang, "Sleeping with your own widowed sister-in-law, what kind of dirty things are you thinking about!"

There was a flash of ruthlessness in Zong Yi's eyes, and he stared at Old Man Ren sinisterly.

The old man Ren on the opposite side was unaware of this and was still talking nonsense, "Today I have to teach you a lesson. Don't grow up without knowing the principles of being a human being..."

Zong Yi walked to the corner of the room where firewood was piled. Zong Bai saw him and ran out quickly.

Old Man Ren didn't care. He just felt that his preaching was effective and he knew to add fuel to the fire. He said proudly, "Young man, you should listen to the old people more and stop taking yourself too seriously. If you really want to say..."

Zong Yi picked up a long and thick wooden stick. As soon as he held it in his hand, he heard the howling of old man Ren behind him, which startled him and turned his head.

Tian was holding a wooden basin and smashing it at Old Man Ren, cursing as she did so.

"You old bastard, you dare to order my kid around, you must have eaten shit in your brain..."

Seeing old man Ren wailing in pain after being beaten, Ren's family members hurried over to stop them. Zong Yi thought about it and put down the stick in his hand and went forward to stop Tian.

"This old bitch is so strong. Ouch, my whole body hurts... Ouch..." Old Man Ren was helped to lie down.

Tian looked over Zong Yi's shoulder and cursed, "If you say something nonsense again, I will tear you to pieces, you old bastard. Be careful or you will fall to your death on the way."

"What's going on?" Xia Niang came over from the opposite side of the yard and asked.

Looking at the people in the room like this, he asked again, "Why are they fighting again for no reason?"
