Chapter 38 Wearing New Shoes

Wen felt a pang of regret over the cost of the shoes and cloth, so she pulled Yang Cui aside and said, "Xiaocui, are you stupid? He's not even her biological son. Why are you buying him shoes and clothes? We've already done more than enough by feeding him every day. Don't be foolish."

After saying that, Madam Wen snatched the shoes from Yuan Qiu's hand and said seriously, "You are a boy, so your skin is thick and tough. You can wear the cheap ones. Give the good shoes to your sisters."

"Aunt, what are you doing?" Yang Cui took the shoes again and handed them to Yuan Qiu, "Your godmother gave them to you, so just keep them."

But this time Yuan Qiu didn't accept: "Godmother, I don't need to wear new shoes, just give them to my older sister and younger sister."

“They have some too. Each of us in the family will get a pair. Everyone gets one. Take them and try them on to see if they fit.” Yang Cui shoved the shoes directly into Yuan Qiu’s arms. “Go ahead.”

Wen Shi got anxious and, in front of Yuan Qiu, said without any hesitation, "He's not even my biological son, just an adopted child. Why are you being so good to him? Do you have too much money to burn?"

“Aunt, this is something I gave voluntarily. Now that I’ve adopted him, I have to take responsibility for him. Please stop bringing up the idea that he’s my biological son whom I picked up.”

“Raising a child doesn’t cost money or food!” Madam Wen rolled her eyes at Yang Cui. “What will happen to him when you get married? Will the man’s family want him? If it were a girl, we could just get her married off early and exchange the dowry. But it’s a boy! You really bring home all sorts of things, good and bad.”

“As long as he is sensible and obedient, I can still afford to support one or two people. Also, I don’t plan to get married in the future, I only want to find a husband.” Yang Cui said seriously, “Aunt, even if you mean well, please don’t say these things again. I hope you can respect my decision.”

Hearing this, Madam Wen was a little unhappy. She felt that Yang Cui was too inconsiderate. She had money to buy shoes for some random kid, but didn't know how to buy shoes for her own cousin. All four of her sons were Yang Cui's cousins. Weren't they closer than a wild child she picked up?

Wen's face was extremely grim.

Yang Cui didn't have time to care what Wen Shi was thinking. She had to settle her things and tidy up the house again, so that when guests from the city came, the house wouldn't be so dilapidated and old that they wouldn't dare to come in.

Er Ya and San Ya washed their feet and put on their new shoes, their faces beaming with joy. After their initial excitement, they carefully took the shoes off, afraid of getting them dirty.

Why aren't you wearing them?

Er Ya laughed and said, "I'll wear it during the Chinese New Year."

Sanya touched the new shoes with affection: "New clothes and new shoes, I'll save them for the New Year."

“No need to wait until the New Year, I’ll buy you new ones then. Just take off the old ones and throw them away,” Yang Cui replied.

When Sanya heard that there would be new shoes, she was very excited: "Mom, are you serious? You're buying us new shoes for the New Year?"

"Of course! Go change, sweetie."

Er Ya frowned: "Mom, we don't need to buy so much. It will cost a lot of money. We need to be careful with our money."

Yang Cui couldn't help but laugh at Er Ya's precocious appearance. She patted Er Ya's head and said, "Silly girl, I'll take care of the money! Go and change them all."

"Thank you, Mother."

Sanya was already happily wearing her new shoes. Erya was sensible, but she was still a child after all. When she saw her sister put on her new shoes, she immediately put them on as well. However, she didn't throw away her old shoes, nor did she allow Sanya to throw them away. She said that they should be kept so that she could wear the old shoes when going up the mountain or down to the fields in the future, so that the new shoes wouldn't get dirty or damaged easily.

Yang Cui naturally noticed Er Ya's sensible nature and never hesitated to praise the child.

"Qiuqiu, you shouldn't keep your old shoes anymore. They're too worn out. Look, your toes are all scratched."

"Thank you, godmother." Yuan Qiu also put on the new shoes and stood with Er Ya and San Ya, grinning foolishly at the shoes.

For him, this was more than just a pair of shoes.
