Ningzhou
Prince Ning's Mansion
Cao Jiao was wearing a simple and elegant dress, standing quietly in front of the window, holding tightly in her hand the ruby hairpin given to her by Jin Linlin.
Tears fell from the corners of Cao Jiao's eyes like pearls with broken strings, dripping onto her white clothes, forming small water stains.
She recalled every moment she and Jin Linlin had spent together traveling to this world. They supported and relied on each other, facing the difficulties in life together.
However, Jin Linlin had already left her, gone from this world forever. Cao Jiao's heart ached like a knife, and she gripped the hairpin tightly, her knuckles turning white from the excessive force.
Her heart was filled with grief and resentment. Why was fate so cruel to take away her best friend?
Jiang Shuyan gently opened the door and walked in. When he saw Cao Jiao's tearful face, his heart tightened.
He thought of his second brother and sister-in-law. They had a deep relationship, and now his sister-in-law had passed away suddenly. His second brother must have been very sad.
Jiang Shuyan slowly walked over to Cao Jiao, stretched out his arms and held her tightly in his arms. He patted her back gently, as if comforting a wounded child.
Cao Jiao felt Jiang Shuyan's warmth, she hugged him tightly and cried even harder.
At this moment, Cao Jiao felt as if she had lost the whole world. Jin Linlin's departure made her feel extremely lonely and helpless.
She had always dreamed that one day they would be able to sit together, talk and listen to gossip as before. However, this beautiful wish could never come true.
After a while, Cao Jiao slowly withdrew her tears, and her eyes became firm. Just then, a rapid knock on the door broke the silence in the room. Jiang Shuyan let go of Cao Jiao and went to open the door.
A messenger stood outside the door, panting, "Master Jiang, news has come from Linhai Prefecture that Jiang Zhixu is riding alone, heading non-stop for the capital! If he passes through Ningzhou, be sure to intercept him."
"What? Is my brother crazy? Linhai Prefecture and Bian Ting have already fallen out. Going to the capital at this time is like a sheep walking into a tiger's mouth."
Cao Jiao also stood up in shock:
"Notify everyone to stop King Linhai and bring him to the palace when they see him." The guard took the order and left.
Jiang Shuyan frowned, worried. "Brother has always been a steady person. He must be taking such a risk this time because of Second Sister-in-law."
Cao Jiao bit her lip and thought for a moment: "No matter what, let's stop him and ask him clearly."
A few days later, spies from the palace reported that Jiang Zhixu had been spotted near the Ningzhou border. Cao Jiao and Jiang Shuyan immediately rushed over and saw Jiang Zhixu, exhausted and humiliated, riding a fine horse.
Jiang Shuyan rode his horse to block his way: "Brother, why are you doing this? My second sister-in-law would be worried if she were still alive. It's too dangerous for you to go to the capital."
Jiang Zhixu pulled the reins, his face numb: "I don't know what to do. I can't live without her. I want to go to the capital to bring Linlin back."
Cao Jiao was shocked. She hadn't expected Jiang Zhixu to have such deep feelings for Jin Linlin. He always had a stern and cold face when they were in Beijing. It seemed like he had developed feelings for Linlin.
Cao Jiao urged her horse forward, grabbed Jiang Zhixu's reins, and said earnestly:
"Brother, Linlin has already gone. If you go to the capital impulsively like this, you will only die in vain."
Jiang Zhixu's eyes were filled with sadness and determination:
"I don't care, I have to go."
Jiang Shuyan also advised: "Brother, calm down. If you go to the capital now, the court will not let you go."
Cao Jiao and Jiang Shuyan used all their words and tricks before Jiang Zhixu finally calmed down and sighed:
"Forget it, I'll listen to you and not go to the capital for now." Cao Jiao and Jiang Shuyan looked at each other and breathed a sigh of relief.
As soon as the three of them arrived at Prince Ning's Mansion, a servant came to report:
"Your Highness, a mother and daughter came to the door. They said they were the family of Princess Linhai. They wanted to stay in the mansion for one night and go to Linhai Prefecture tomorrow."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Shuyan and Cao Jiao looked at Jiang Zhixu at the same time, with doubts in their eyes.
"Are my sister-in-law's family members coming?" Jiang Shuyan looked at his brother curiously with a surprised expression.
Jiang Zhixu also looked bewildered. He shook his head and said, "I wasn't notified. My father-in-law just left, and he didn't say the Jin family was coming."
Seeing this, Cao Jiao raised the corners of her mouth slightly, glanced at the brothers with a smile, and then said slowly:
"Don't make wild guesses here. Just go and take a look and you'll know. If they really are my sister-in-law's family, we'll treat them well."
After that, the three of them stood up together and walked towards the reception hall.
When they entered the hall, they immediately saw a mother and daughter sitting there. The woman was about thirty or forty years old, with a pretty face and a gentle temperament; the girl next to her was about fifteen or sixteen years old, with a pretty face.
However, when the three of them looked at the girl, they were all stunned. The reason was simply that the girl looked 80% similar to Jin Linlin.
Especially the expression between their eyebrows and eyes, which were exactly the same. Jiang Zhixu was even more dazed for a moment, as if he saw Jin Linlin's figure.
When the woman saw the three of them coming in, she quickly stood up, bowed to them, and said politely:
"Greetings, Your Highness. We are Linlin's family. We were heartbroken to hear that she passed away, so we came here to visit her," the woman said in a tearful voice.
Seeing this, Cao Jiao hurried forward, personally helped the woman up, and said with concern:
