Chapter 30: Sharing the Money

After selling things for the whole morning, Zhu Cuilan was tired and prepared dinner early and waited for them to come back.

Not seeing Zhao Luochuan coming back, and hearing that he had gone out to buy incense paper, Zhu Cuilan covered the rice in the pot, otherwise in this weather, the rice would get cold soon after it was served.

When Zhao Luochuan came out of Yang's house, his anger had not subsided at all. He walked forward with big strides of anger.

The Yang family were scoundrels, and they wouldn't give up unless they were dealt a serious blow. There would be trouble in the future. But Zhao Luochuan wasn't afraid either. He knew he would fight back if the enemy came, and he didn't believe the Yang family could still do anything.

He walked while thinking, turned into a longevity shop and bought two stacks of yellow paper. After he put the incense paper back in his own yard, he turned and walked to the next yard.

As soon as I entered the door, I saw Yang Donghu sitting by the door helping his aunt thread the needle, and my heart suddenly softened.

He didn't say anything, just watched quietly.

Yang Donghu handed the threaded needle to Zhu Cuilan and was about to stand up to see why Zhao Luochuan had not come back yet, but when he looked up, he saw him standing at the door staring at him.

"You're back, why aren't you talking?"

Yang Donghu took two steps forward in confusion and reached out to pull Zhao Luochuan's sleeve.

Zhao Luochuan's gaze was unwavering, staring at him intently, his gaze burning like a substance. Yang Donghu felt a tremor in his heart as he stared at him. "What's wrong with you?"

Zhu Cuilan put away her needlework and looked at the two people standing at the door. She called out, "Have you bought the things? Come in and wash your hands. The meal has been prepared for you and we've been waiting for you to come back and eat. Come in."

Zhao Luochuan then said to Yang Donghu, "It's okay."

Yang Donghu hummed, smiled and said, "The water for washing hands has been scooped up a long time ago, go quickly."

After saying that, he went to the kitchen to help Zhu Cuilan serve the food on the table.

Now that everyone in the family can earn money, Zhu Cuilan is no longer as stingy with the oil when cooking as she used to be. No matter what kind of vegetarian dish it is, as long as she scoops a big spoonful of lard on it, it will taste like meat, and it will be more fragrant and smoother.

Zhao Luochuan took out the sixty taels he had bought today and divided them up. Although Zhao Fangyu had followed him up the mountain, the art of hunting wasn't easy to learn, so he mostly helped with the little chores. Therefore, when Zhao Luochuan suggested splitting the money equally, he was the first to disagree.

"Dachuan, what are you talking about? You caught all the prey, and I only spent the effort to carry it. How can I ask you for an equal share of the money? Put it away and stop talking."

Zhu Cuilan also waved her hands repeatedly to refuse: "Dachuan, you are being unreasonable. What are you doing? If this continues, I will not let you come to dinner in the future."

Zhao Luochuan had anticipated this situation and had already prepared an explanation. He smiled and said, "Auntie, don't listen to my nonsense about it being just a waste of effort. You don't know, it was Brother Fang Yu who discovered those two deer, and it was Brother Fang Yu who chose to dig the traps for catching the deer. These should have been his."

Zhao Hai and Zhao He are eight years apart in age. Zhao He's parents died when he was young, and their father only took Zhao Hai up the mountain, so Zhao Hai is the only one who knows the hunter's skills.

Originally, Zhao Hai wanted to teach this skill to his younger brother, but he was only a teenager at the time. The mountains were full of ferocious beasts, and there was no way he could take an uninitiated child up there. Later, Zhao He learned the craft of bricklaying instead.

Bricklayers don't make as much money as hunters, and Zhao Fangyu wasn't interested in being a bricklayer. If Zhu Cuilan hadn't felt sorry for her young son and didn't want him to suffer in the mountains, Zhao Fangyu might have followed his uncle up the mountain much earlier.

But now he has become a man who can set up his own household, and Zhu Cuilan no longer interferes with his decisions.

Zhao Luochuan was also happy to pass on his skills to Zhao Fangyu. After all, his father had felt guilty towards his younger brother. Now that Zhao He's lineage had also produced a hunter, his father would be very happy to know.

"Aunt, I can see from this trip up the mountain that Brother Fang Yu is very insightful and learns things very quickly. I think it would be better if Brother Fang Yu could go up the mountain with me in the future." Zhao Luochuan changed the subject and asked.

Zhu Cuilan knew that Zhao Fangyu had always wanted to be a hunter, but now that he was old she could no longer control him, so she just let him be.

She thought for a moment and said, "If Fang Yu wants to go, then go ahead. But let's make this clear first. I have no objection to you and Dachuan going up the mountain, but look, Dachuan has already married his husband, and what about you? I haven't even seen a trace of him. You can go up the mountain, but I'll find someone to arrange a matchmaking for you. You can't keep making excuses like before, do you understand?"

Zhao Fangyu's excited expression suddenly collapsed, and he said reluctantly: "Mom..."

"If you don't listen, forget about going up the mountain. It's your choice."

The appeal of being a hunter was much greater than not having a matchmaker. Zhao Fangyu's trip up the mountain further solidified his determination to become a hunter. He pondered for a moment, then nodded and said, "Okay."

Seeing him like this, Zhu Cuilan knew that he was unwilling, but continuing the family line was a big deal and could not be taken lightly, so she had no choice but to do so.

She pushed the thirty taels back and said to Zhao Luochuan, "Since Fang Yu learned skills from you, you should be his master, so you can't accept this money."

Zhao Luochuan didn't expect that the more he said, the more mistakes he made. He quickly thought of an excuse: "How about this, I'll take back ten taels as the tuition paid by Brother Fang Yu, and the rest is what he deserves. Aunt, please don't make excuses, otherwise how can I take Brother Fang Yu up the mountain in the future?"

We are all family, and pushing it back and forth would only make things awkward. Zhu Cuilan had no choice but to accept the money.

With these twenty taels, I could straighten my back when I proposed to Fang Yu, and I wouldn't have to worry about asking for a high bride price. When I make more money in the future, I can save it to prepare a sufficient dowry for Fang Chu, so that he won't be bullied by others when he gets married.
