Chapter 1 Just say you want a man

Ke Meiyu's head was throbbing with pain. As soon as she opened her eyes, an old woman came to her side and looked at her earnestly:

"My dear Yu Bao'er, you're finally awake! Does your head hurt a lot?"

"I've warmed up some brown sugar and egg custard for you in the pot, and added a big spoonful of honey. It's so sweet and delicious!"

The old woman smiled at her, her wrinkled face beaming.

"My little fish, how could you be so foolish as to refuse to eat or drink for a philandering playboy?"

Otherwise, you wouldn't have been too weak to call on your father and brothers to avenge you!

The middle-aged woman also came over, her voice filled with concern, "Little Fish, is there anything else that's bothering you..."

Ke Meiyu simply pursed her lips and shook her head. After enduring the initial discomfort, she became completely stunned.

She looked around at the simple, dilapidated, yet exceptionally clean and tidy mud-brick houses.

An old, floral blue cloth separated the inside from the outside. On the wall hung a straw hat, a bamboo basket, and a fuzzy, military-green canvas shoulder bag. On the pitted wooden table sat a round mirror with a bright red plastic frame and a mottled enamel mug inscribed with "Serve the People." Next to it were three wooden boxes and a five-drawer chest.

And on the solid wood bed she was lying on, hung an old, patched mosquito net...

Coupled with the chaotic memories she had just received, Ke Meiyu turned her head to look at the two of them with a blank expression.

Alright, she's transmigrated into the body of the wicked cousin of the protagonist, Fu Bao, in a period fantasy novel!

At this moment, the female lead, Ke Enshu, was pushed into the river by the original owner, but was rescued by Yu Jingyuan, the original owner's betrothal partner who was carrying gifts.

In the 1970s, under the watchful eyes of many, for whatever reason, the two embraced.

The original owner couldn't stand that a potential marriage partner who earned a meager fifty-odd yuan a month would bypass her and fall into the hands of her dark-skinned, skinny, and unremarkable cousin.

However, it was the old man who made the decision to arrange the marriage between Ke Enshu and Yu Jingyuan. The original owner went on a hunger strike to protest, but more so out of spite.

During the autumn harvest, everyone in the family, young and old, goes out to work.

Fearing things might change, the second wife took the opportunity to make a hasty decision without consulting the other party, which provoked the original owner to come out and cause trouble. As a result, she was stopped by her second aunt and fell to the ground, breaking her head!

Ke Meiyu accepted all of the original owner's memories, a faint, cold smile playing on her lips. Was it truly a "just right" and a "perfect match"?

Just then, a commotion arose outside the courtyard. "Hey, in-laws, your house is quite lively. Did we come at the wrong time?"

The Ke family valued their reputation highly. Even though they were unhappy that the second wife's daughter had taken away Ke Meiyu's marriage, they still had to put on a show in front of outsiders and let the second wife's family and the matchmaker welcome them in.

The main room and Ke Meiyu's room were separated only by a thin curtain!

"Enshu, go ask your grandma for some brown sugar and eggs to treat the guests," said Aunt Ke, who was usually taciturn, with a hint of pride in her voice.

"The brown sugar and egg custard was still warm in the pot, with a thick layer of wild honey on top. I took it to give to the three children to sweeten their mouths."

"Country folks may not have much else, but they always have plenty of wild honey and eggs."

The Ke family members looked at Aunt Ke with undisguised surprise. They couldn't believe that someone who usually acted like a submissive wife would suddenly become the master of the house and even dare to covet the food that the old lady had saved for her beloved children!

Grandma Ke and her mother glared at the curtain with dark faces, silently cursing a few times.

Ko Eun-sook hesitated for a moment, then smiled shyly and agreed.

She did indeed go to the kitchen first to get the food, distributed it to the three mischievous children, then lifted the curtain and stood at the door without coming in, speaking softly and politely:

"Grandma, we have guests coming to our house. Could you lend us some brown sugar and eggs?"

The word "borrow" not only embarrassed the Ke family but also blocked Grandma Ke's various excuses.

Grandma Ke was so angry that her face was contorted, and her chest heaved violently. Even against the light, you could see the defiant smile on the girl's bean sprout-like face.

Unfortunately, as the matriarch of a large rural family, she couldn't scold or beat the second branch of the family because of outsiders, and she even had to offer them eggs and brown sugar to save face for them!

Since Grandma Ke became a mother-in-law after being a daughter-in-law, she has never suffered such a loss, especially from her own family.

Ke Meiyu held the old lady's hand and said with a smile, "I'm sorry, cousin. We only have two chickens at home, and they lay eggs every day. Grandma uses them all to nourish my body."

Sigh, it's also my fault for being so weak. How could I have lost my balance with just a gentle push from my second aunt and ended up with a concussion? I can't run or jump anymore and will have to take good care of myself.

The steamed egg custard in the pot is my tonic for today. I used brown sugar to mask the medicinal taste, but I don't know if a child's body can handle it. After all, medicine is always somewhat toxic...

But when guests come over, you can't just serve them plain water, can you?

"Mom, could you please go to Aunt Chen's house next door and borrow a few eggs for my cousin?"

Her voice was soft and unhurried, giving no one a chance to interrupt, but her words were like solid slaps, hitting the second wife's face repeatedly.

The three boys, who were happily eating their breakfast, were pulled away by the startled adults and made to vomit. Looking at the egg spill on the ground, the bewildered children started howling at the top of their lungs.

This caused the Yu family and the matchmaker to look extremely uncomfortable.

Ke Enshu pursed her lips tightly, her gaze turning melancholic as she looked at Ke Meiyu. Then, her face fell, and she said timidly and self-reproachfully:

"Cousin, I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to steal your marriage."

At that time, I...

I accidentally slipped and fell into the river. If I had known that Comrade Yu's rescue would lead to so much trouble, I would have preferred to have been swept away by the current!

Ko Mei-yu raised an eyebrow:

"Don't be like that. When my cousin cornered me on the bridge to talk, didn't she think of this situation?"

We've barely spoken a few words to each other normally, but that day you started babbling like a machine gun, saying that Grandpa and Grandma were biased and that we, the various branches of the family, were sucking the blood of your second branch.

Just as Comrade Yu was getting close, he was still tugging at my clothes. I was just pulling my clothes away, and you jumped into the river.

"Just say you want a man. With our relationship, why would I refuse? Especially since he's an older man with three kids!"
