Chapter 10: A Deeper Belief in Auspicious Fate

The old man didn't give anyone time to be surprised, and quickly and efficiently stated his plan:

"The courtyard belongs to me and your mother. Each of the four branches of the family will have a plot of land, and the location will be determined by drawing lots."

You can continue to live in your current house until your new house is built.

According to the village's regulations, the private plots will be divided among the number of people in each of your families. Two chickens are not enough to go around, so they will stay in the old courtyard and be distributed to you when they start brooding.

Both pigs will remain in the old courtyard, and you four households will take turns feeding them. One will be handed over at the end of the year, and the other will be slaughtered. Meat, grain, and work points will all be distributed according to the number of people!

The five hundred yuan will be divided into six portions. Your mother and I will take one portion, each of the four branches of the family will take one portion, and the remaining portion will be given to the unmarried children. Although it's not much, it's a token of our love as grandparents.

The remaining items were also divided into five parts!

Your mother and I are still in relatively good health, so we won't interfere with your lives. When we become too old to move around, we'll take turns living with you in our old age.

Before this, you gave us two old folks twenty yuan, fifty jin of wheat, one hundred jin of corn, and three hundred jin of sweet potatoes per house per year.

When my wife and I have big expenses, you four brothers can split the cost!

Most elderly people will live with their eldest child or their favorite child, and the family assets will naturally be tilted towards the first or second child. Moreover, they may even make the children from the other child's family leave with nothing!

This method of distribution is exceptionally fair and just; you won't find anything like it anywhere in the surrounding area, and no one present could utter a single word of objection.

Each household has its own foundation, grain, over eighty yuan, and pork to share, which will definitely allow them to live a prosperous life after the division of the family property.

Ko Eun-sook felt uneasy, as if the old couple were planning something big. Otherwise, given how much they doted on the other families, how could they have made such a wise decision to separate the family?

Were they merely putting on a show of fairness in front of the village chief and his group to silence everyone, only to plot something else behind closed doors?

She glanced at Ke Meiyu beside the old lady with a hint of coldness in her eyes, still feeling that to make her parents completely distrust this group of people, it would be best to write a letter severing ties with them.

To save myself from being reborn and having to be Ke Meiyu's workhorse!

Ke Meiyu has keen senses; even without using her special abilities, she turned her head and caught the resentment emanating from the female lead.

She chuckled softly, "Eighth Sister, I'm sorry, I got up to use the restroom last night and accidentally overheard your conversation with Second Uncle and Second Aunt."

If you want to separate the family, just say so. Don't try to play tricks on your family members.

You took Yu Jingyuan from me, which was something I never wanted in the first place, so it doesn't matter if I give him to you.

However, my grandparents are old and value their reputation and the Ke family's honor above all else; they can't withstand the trouble caused by the younger generation.

Now that we've separated, we'll each live our own lives and not interfere with each other. Otherwise, I'll make you regret it to the core!

Ko Eun-sook couldn't help but glare at her. How could there be such an annoying person in the world?

Ke Meiyu is like an X-ray glass, not only revealing all her inner thoughts, but also bluntly exposing them to everyone.

Suddenly, Ke Enshu smiled and said, "Seventh Sister, I really feel sorry about the previous marriage."

Since everything has become a fait accompli, you should learn to let go and move forward calmly.

I only feel guilty and want to make amends to you, how could I possibly have any ulterior motives?

"In another month, I'll be getting married and moving to the city. After that, my sister and I will only be able to see each other during holidays."

With a casual remark, she pushed Ke Meiyu onto the grounds that she was mentally unstable and would sting anyone she could.

Ke Meiyu rested her chin on her hand and smiled casually, saying, "That's for the best. After all, you and your future brother-in-law both have jobs, and you can't afford to be bothered by others."

Ke Enshu said with a blank face and a slight gritted teeth, "Don't worry, Seventh Sister, I'm very busy taking care of my husband and children!"

The four plots of land are not all the same size, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some are large but are located near the back mountain and have a high risk factor. Some are smaller but are located at the entrance of the village and have slightly more convenient transportation. Some are close to the fields and some are close to the old house.

Ke Meiyu's eyes darted around, and she leaned close to the old lady and whispered, "Grandma, Uncle is the eldest son in the family, and he lives close to the old house, so it's convenient for him to take care of you."

As soon as she finished speaking, Boss Ke reached out and drew lots. In the tense atmosphere, he opened the lot and it was the plot of land closest to the old house!

The old lady opened her mouth in surprise and turned her head to look at the smug Ke Meiyu.

"My second uncle is a fake honest man, but he's actually cunning. He doesn't do much work, but he has a good reputation."

Second Aunt is also a snob. Just you wait and see, if she gives birth to a boy, her tail will definitely fly to the sky!

To avoid causing you and Grandpa any trouble, they'd better live near the fields, thus preserving their good reputation!

Ke Meiyu continued to mutter angrily in a low voice.

Sure enough, the note from Ke Lao Er was about that plot of land. People going to work in the fields would pass by the gate, and in the countryside, people would leave their gates open as long as someone was home, otherwise they would be talked about and isolated.

In other words, once the second wife's new house is built, it will be difficult to keep secrets in the family!

The old lady couldn't help but chuckle.

"My third uncle's family isn't large, but they live at the village entrance, which is nice. They set up a stall at the market and sell tea to supplement their income."

“My family is large, so living in the back mountain is perfect. It's also more convenient for Wong Tai Sin to come down the mountain and bring me food.”

I'll take care of Grandpa and Grandma then!

"Little rascal," the old lady said, her belief in Ke Meiyu's auspicious destiny growing even stronger.

If it's not an auspicious omen, how could you possibly be so accurate?!

After the division of the family property was written, the four Ke brothers moved their respective belongings into their rooms.

Eighty yuan is a lot of money. Even if the neighbors help each other build houses and use local materials, they still need to be provided with meals, right?

Not only do we need to make sure the helpers are well-fed, but they also need to eat well. Plus, we just separated the family and need to buy a lot of things, so eighty yuan is hardly enough to cover the expenses.

Therefore, all four families unanimously postponed the house construction indefinitely!

After a fairly hearty farewell lunch, each household began building stoves against the wall and then propping up thatched roofs with two thick sticks. With plenty of labor in the four households, the work was finished in no time.

Meanwhile, the other houses were only just beginning to be mixed with mud...

The father and his six sons exchanged glances, then shouted into the house at the top of their lungs, "It's still early, let's go to work in the fields!"

"Dad, brother, come back early, Mom will make egg pancakes tonight..."

Ke Meiyu shouted back at the top of her lungs.

"When you come back, remember to pick a few scallions and a handful of green beans from your private plot!"

The men responded and dashed out of the yard, perfectly befitting their usual lazy and slacking nature, always running away at the first sign of trouble. This made the other three families so reluctant to even lend a hand to Er Kang, since it wouldn't make a difference.

"It's no wonder that the fourth wife can't get married or marry into the family," Aunt Ke Er muttered resentfully as she carried in a load of mud.
