The kitchen was filled with delicious food, including pickled cucumbers, sweet and sour garlic, pickled cowpeas, spicy cabbage, salted eggs, dried meat and other pickled products brought from home; fried meatballs, lotus root boxes, eggplant boxes, sugar cakes, ribbonfish, crispy pork, fried chicken legs and other fried foods; and donkey rolls, sticky rice cakes, rice cakes, flower cakes, bean buns and other pasta dishes were being made.
If it weren't for the limited stove and time, Ke's mother could have continued to make a difference.
They bought a lot of brown paper bags and delivered three bags to each household in the afternoon, making sure everyone could fully appreciate Mrs. Ke's excellent cooking skills.
Professor Xue and Professor Zhao held prominent positions at the provincial university, so the people living around their homes were either university leaders or senior professors.
People were more naive at that time, and Mr. Xue and Mr. Zhao had also given advance notice.
So when everyone received the gifts from the Ke family, they all accepted them with smiles and then returned the favor with gifts such as fruits, pastries, candies, and drinks.
The Ke family accepted it without hesitation.
Madam Ke was originally very talented in cooking. With the guidance of Ke Meiyu and the study of recipes obtained from the Ji family, her culinary skills improved rapidly. She completely broke free from the constraints of rural life and stepped into the ranks of master chefs.
"Old Zhu, what delicious food did you make at home today? It smells so good!" Ji Moning, the president of the university, returned home and smelled the aroma in the air. He couldn't help but relax his brows, his stomach rumbled, and he asked with a light laugh.
Teacher Zhu brought out the last soup bowl and said with a smile, "It was sent by a student's parent who is staying at Teacher Xue's house. They said it was homemade, and I couldn't refuse, so I packed up a net bag of tangerines that someone had sent me the other day and sent them back."
"These hungry monkeys are already jumping around, just waiting for you to come back and serve dinner."
Urged by the children, Ji Moning quickly took off her coat, washed her hands, and sat down at the table.
A large plate of groceries, a plate of noodles, and a plate of pickled vegetables.
"It's quite a feast," Principal Ji said, picking up his chopsticks and taking a small piece of crispy pork. Although it was a bit cold, its crispy and savory flavor was very appetizing. "Good, this tastes just right. I haven't had such delicious crispy pork in years. I remember when I was young, I was on a business trip and passed through Zibo City. I tried it at a master chef's house."
"That's a time-honored brand passed down through generations. I never expected to taste this flavor again today."
He smiled at his wife and said, "Old Zhu, it's rare to have such a good dish. I'm not doing anything tonight, how about a couple of drinks?"
Teacher Zhu laughed and scolded, "So the food at home isn't good enough? You can come up with any excuse if you want to drink."
She brought out the wine, saying, "Only two small cups!"
Principal Ji tasted all the food the Ke family had brought, nodding repeatedly and exclaiming:
"This woman's cooking skills could not have been honed in less than a few decades."
Teacher Zhu looked at the children who were engrossed in their food and whispered to him, "Old Ji, isn't our cafeteria looking to hire a head chef? What do you think of Sister-in-law Ke?"
"Excellent!" Principal Ji clapped his hands and exclaimed, "Wife, you've woken me up! Sister-in-law Ke's cooking is delicious. If she came to our cafeteria, wouldn't we be able to have good food every day?"
"Old Ji, I think Sister-in-law Ke's cooking skills are better than our cafeteria chef's. Why don't we arrange for her to cook on the second floor of the third cafeteria?"
Principal Ji was taken aback, then frowned: "Old Fu and Old Yuan are both eyeing this position, wanting to put their relatives in it."
Teacher Zhu glared at him: "That's why I can't stand it. Even though they're the principals with the title of vice principal, they're always going against you. You're a person who thinks big and far ahead, and you don't want to fuss over such trivial matters. But haven't you heard our old saying, 'If you can't sweep your own room, how can you sweep the world?'"
"You're the principal, the whole school is your home, the kitchen is a vital space, especially since you want to add a Western food window on the second floor of the third canteen. Do you think any of their relatives would know how to do that?"
"Do you really want those two to take advantage of you?"
“Others take care of their relatives, but we don’t have any relatives to take care of. However, the Ke family are important guests whom Old Master Xue and Old Master Zhao have repeatedly instructed us to take care of. We’ve accepted the job, so how can we not do it? Besides, Sister-in-law Ke is a really capable person!”
Principal Ji smiled and tapped her, "You, you're still as quick-witted as you were when you were young, you always think you're right."
"How about this? Let's hold a cooking competition in front of the third canteen. The top three will be hired as head chefs in the canteen, with a three-month probationary period. The first place winner, who also knows Western cuisine, will be assigned to the second floor of the third canteen. What do you think?"
Teacher Zhu couldn't help but laugh out loud: "You're the one who's talking! You know Sister-in-law Ke has real skills, so you're openly using connections to get her in!"
"Okay, let's do it this way. I'll let them know later."
"Mom, let's go," the eldest son in fifth grade said after finishing his soup. "We've already arranged with Liangzi and the others to go see the talking parrot together."
“Yes, let the children go, but we need to avoid any appearance of impropriety,” Principal Ji agreed.
The Ke family had just finished dinner when Wangdi flew contentedly into the yard to digest his food, only to be surrounded by a group of children.
It immediately stood proudly on the low wall, slowly preening its pure white feathers.
"Hello, big parrot, what's your name?" a child asked softly, afraid of startling it away.
Wang Di continued to arrogantly turn around, presenting his backside to them.
Ke's father still called Qin Yuanjiu to the yard. Although he couldn't do strenuous activities since he had just eaten, he could still gesture with his hands.
Seeing this, he laughed and said, "Our Yunbao is a picky eater. If you don't coax her with good food, she won't talk to anyone."
The children realized what was happening and quickly took out their snacks from their pockets.
