“But I still think it’s better for the child to know something. In case her biological parents really come, can we prevent them from meeting and recognizing each other? It can also give the child a heads-up in advance.”
“Simply keeping it from her might not be good for her; we have to let her make her own decision.”
Mother Ke sighed softly, "I know, Mother. Xiaoyuer has always been decisive, and we really shouldn't have kept it from her."
“This child is loyal and devoted. Even if she knows she’s not our biological child, would she still distance herself from us? If she’s lucky, she might get another family that loves her. But if that family is like the Ling family, we’ll just disown her.”
With Ke's mother's words in mind, the old lady felt more at ease. When she returned home, she told Ke Meiyu about her background. "Bao'er, what Grandma is about to say is not a joke at all."
"Don't feel any psychological burden or negative emotions. Grandma is just telling you the truth, but you can feel the emotions yourself."
Ke Meiyu already had a pretty good idea of what she was going to say, but she still smiled and nodded in agreement, "Go ahead and say it. Grandma is good to me, how could I have any psychological burden or negative emotions?"
Grandma Ke hesitated and said, "Then, then should I really start talking?"
Ke Meiyu nodded emphatically again.
"Bao'er, you'll always be our family's precious darling. But, your mother gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, but unfortunately only your little brother survived, and you were adopted!"
Ke Meiyu's eyes widened slightly, and she shook her head in disbelief, "Please tell me quickly, what exactly happened?"
"It's a long story," the old lady sighed softly. "At that time, your mother was giving birth, as was your former second aunt. The house was in chaos. But then, people from the village secretly came looking for your grandfather."
"Back then, plainclothes officers were everywhere arresting enemy agents, like chasing chickens. If they were too harsh, wouldn't that easily provoke a backlash? Those bad guys gathered a group of people who were watching movies in the city, and it caused quite a stir at the time. There were even a few pregnant women among them."
"Your mother was among them. She died from premature birth and severe bleeding due to shock. Your grandfather carried you and escaped with the help of his men. They walked for several hours at night and happened to arrive at our village."
“He happened to be your grandfather’s superior when he was in the army, and he entrusted you to our family.”
"They said they'd come back to pick you up, but we haven't heard anything since."
"When your grandfather passed away, he left behind a bag of silver dollars. We didn't touch any of them; we've kept them all for you." As she spoke, the old lady handed Ke Meiyu a heavy olive-green canvas bag.
I don't know how these silver dollars were stored; they were all brand new, gleaming with a cool, bright luster under the light.
"Who is he? Since he's someone Grandpa knows, he should at least know his name, right?"
The old lady glanced at Ke Meiyu and, seeing that she didn't have any obvious emotions, said, "Actually, your grandfather wasn't a regular soldier back then. He only spent half a year with your biological grandfather at the beginning, and always called him squad leader Zhao Sangen. Nobody knows if that's his real name."
"I'm afraid your grandfather has been held up by something, which is why he hasn't come to acknowledge you yet."
She and the old man often whispered among themselves that the person was probably gone; otherwise, given how desperately the person had entrusted their child to them, it was impossible for them not to want their own bloodline back.
Ke Meiyu nodded. "Oh."
"Oh? Bao'er, don't you have any ideas?" the old lady asked anxiously.
"What if I know or I don't? If he doesn't come looking for me, am I supposed to go looking for him myself?" Ke Meiyu raised an eyebrow and chuckled, "I just feel that my life is pretty good right now, and I'm not willing to make any changes."
"Sigh, that's true. Look at the Ling family. The whole family is always arguing and bickering. They'd rather squeeze into a tiny space and sleep on a shared bed than separate and live independently."
"Now that your mother is gone, your father will definitely remarry, and then there will be a lot of trouble in the family."
What about the children? Doesn't it just prove the saying that you only see the new people laughing while you don't see the old ones crying?
After going upstairs and putting the child to sleep, Ke Meiyu washed up and lay half-reclined on the bed, holding a book and lost in thought.
Ying Yan had just finished washing up and was drying his hair when he came out, a towel wrapped around his waist. The muscles on his body were clearly defined, as if they had been meticulously sculpted with the most precise proportions.
Normally, Ke Meiyu would have already been itching to pinch it, but now she was a little distracted.
"What's wrong? Thinking about your background?" Ying Yan leaned closer, kissed her forehead, and said with a light laugh, "Since you're curious, why don't you find out for yourself?"
Ke Meiyu shook her head. "I've always had very shallow family ties. If it weren't for the Ke family's kindness to me, I guess I would only be able to rely on you for survival in this world."
"So I'm not curious about Zhao Sangen."
Ying Yan flicked her forehead, "You're just saying one thing and meaning another!"
Ke Meiyu rubbed her forehead and glared at him angrily. "Okay, okay, I admit it. I acted like I didn't care at all because I wanted to appease the old lady."
“I was sent to the Ke family to be raised, and I still have this bag of silver dollars. I’m very curious about who Zhao Sangen is and why he didn’t keep his promise.”
"Is the person gone, or was there some delay, or did they simply not want the trouble I was causing?"
"If you want to know, then go and find out the truth," Ying Yan said, rubbing her head.
Ke Meiyu pursed her lips. Since giving birth, the system and her lucky charm life had been severed. She tried her best not to touch anything too unimaginable, seemingly afraid of breaking this balance and attracting a series of unnecessary troubles.
She figured out a simple truth: as long as she dressed like an ordinary person, nothing strange would happen around her.
