Chapter 35 A promising young man

Ke Yunyue glanced at her sideways, arms crossed, and said, "Do you think I'm like you, getting sold out and still helping the seller count the money!"

"I'll go with him to the provincial capital and find a temporary job in the provincial canteen."

"Besides, I got my marriage certificate with him, which means I was recognized by the organization. For the sake of his bright future, he wouldn't dare to do anything behind my back."

Ke Meiyu said "Oh," and added, "It's good that you've thought it through. I'll go and do your makeup when the time comes."

That's it?

Ke Yunyue puffed out her cheeks: "Ke Meiyu, when I go to the provincial capital, you'll still be stuck here in Luofeng Village, tending to your little plot of land!"

"We'll talk about the future later," Ke Meiyu said with a squinty smile. "Maybe one day they'll organize an open college entrance examination, and getting into university based on your own talent and ability will be much more valuable than being recommended for admission."

"You're just being a sour grapes," Ke Yunyue couldn't help but sneer. "I advise you to tell Qin Yuanjiu to tone it down. He lives in a cowshed, yet he wants to live in the first brick house in our village?"

"Don't end up staying in the police station!"

After saying that, she turned and left.

The man rushed out of the yard, and Ke's mother, who was cooking at the stove, poked her head out and called out, "Yu'er, what does Yunyue want with you?"

Ke Meiyu put down her things and came out, looking at what her mother was making with her hands behind her back. She replied casually, "She didn't say anything, just that she and Comrade Huang are going to get their marriage certificate tomorrow."

"Which Comrade Huang?" Mother Ke was taken aback. "What's going on with you cousins? I was worried sick about you when we had no news, and now you're all suddenly getting married."

"Who else could it be but that pretty boy in the educated youth camp?" Ke Meiyu pouted. "He even said that Uncle would give Huang a worker-peasant-soldier quota, and she would go to the provincial capital to rent a house and work as a temporary worker."

Madam Ke peeked out and, seeing no one in the yard, muttered under her breath, "That girl is so ambitious. She's always been trying to outdo you since she was little, always wanting to be the best she can get."

"She used to follow Xiao Qin around, and everyone in the village knew it, but Xiao Qin wouldn't even look at her."

"She's just angry and using the marriage as an excuse to spite you. Comrade Huang is obviously unreliable. He was clinging to Comrade Tang, working as a fisherman for him in the river, and now he's getting a marriage certificate with Yunyue! The provincial capital is his home. Once he gets there, that girl will probably be devoured until there's nothing left!"

Ke Meiyu munched on a cornbread and ate the roe deer meat with relish.

There were many people on the construction site, all of them young men with big appetites.

This was a good opportunity for Ke Meiyu. Seeing that her mother's attention was not on her, she happily stuffed food into her mouth.

Mother Ke then smiled and said, "This was sent by your grandmother. She said it was roe deer meat hunted by her nephew from her maternal family, just enough for the people at the construction site. You like it so much? I'll have your brothers hunt one for you too, so you can eat your fill."

Ke Meiyu squinted and nodded repeatedly, thinking that the old lady had contributed all her stock, and it seemed that she would go to the back mountain to get some more that night.

"Auntie, Sister Keqi, you have guests! They even brought a truck!" A large group of children rushed over to report the news, but before anyone could ask them anything, they ran off again.

"Who is this? Why are they making such a big fuss?" Madam Ke quickly removed some firewood and simmered the vegetables in the pot over a low flame.

Ke Meiyu's eyes darted around, "Could it be the little dumpling's father?"

“That’s quite possible,” Mrs. Ke said as she walked into the yard and called out to one of her sons, “Go to the back hill and call your Third Grandfather Ke and Fourth Uncle Ke back. Don’t forget about little Lu Yuehai too!”

Before long, a man in military uniform, carrying loads of goods in both hands, strode over with a smile, surrounded by villagers.

“This is Grandpa Ke’s house,” a kind villager said, pointing to the Ke family’s courtyard. “That’s Aunt Ke’s fourth wife. Your child was saved by her seventh child.”

"It's Sister Ke and her husband. She and Comrade Qin got their marriage certificate yesterday!"

Upon seeing the two women in the courtyard, the man quickly stepped forward and bowed deeply, his head almost touching his knees: "Hello, Auntie! Hello, Comrade Ke! I am Lu Yuehai's father, Lu Zhensheng. Thank you for saving my child."

"Oh, hello, hello!" Mrs. Ke said somewhat awkwardly, "Come inside and talk. The child's grandfather and father are building a house on the back hill, and your child is joining in the fun with the other children. They should be back soon."

Then she gently nudged Ke Meiyu, telling her to go inside and wait a while, while she went to pour brown sugar water for the guests.

Lu Zhensheng smiled and went into the main room.

The villagers all rushed into the courtyard to see what was going on. "Comrade Lu, where are you from? Where are you serving in the army?"

"The kids in the city are really brave. It's lucky they met Fu Bao from our village, otherwise the child would never have been found..."

Lu Zhensheng answered all his basic questions carefully, but he didn't reveal a single word about the organization's confidentiality requirements.

When Grandpa Ke and the others returned, Grandma Ke sent the people who had come to watch the commotion in the yard away.

The little boy clung to the old lady's leg, head down, eyes red, too afraid to approach.

"You brat, come here right now!" Lu Zhensheng choked up as he hurriedly walked out of the house, squatted down, and opened his arms.

The little dumpling burst into tears and threw itself into its father's arms like a little cannonball, wailing, "Daddy, my dear daddy, why did you take so long to come!"

"I was almost kidnapped by human traffickers. I thought I would never see you and Mom again. Waaah, I miss the vegetable pancakes Mom makes, I miss my little schoolbag, and I miss the wooden gun you made for me, Dad..."

The baby was crying so hard it was heartbreaking, and everyone present had tears in their eyes.

Ke Meiyu pushed open the window a crack and raised an eyebrow to look out.

Tuanzi's little face was facing her, and the tears were real, but after a few drops, the rest was just his impressive performance.

At this moment, he could still sob and lament his miserable state while winking at her, as if to say, "Sister, do you think I did the right thing?"

Ke Meiyu nodded and gave him a thumbs up, saying, "You're a promising young man!"

The little dumpling became more relaxed. Following what she had learned, she first expressed her fear, then sincerely admitted her mistake, and then repeatedly said that she would behave well and study when she got back.

If the child was well-behaved and pitiful, Lu Zhensheng would feel so sorry for him that he wished he could rip his own heart out.

"Dad, I want to get into a university in Kyoto, and after graduation I'll join the army. Once I become a battalion commander, I'll marry my sister's younger sister..."

What?

The sentimental atmosphere was instantly shattered. Lu Zhensheng gritted his teeth, patted his bottom—not hard—and said with a wry smile, "Are you looking to study or get a wife? You little brat, what are you capable of?"

The little boy stuck out his neck and said, "Dad, you haven't seen how beautiful my sister is! If Uncle Qin hadn't grown up and married her first, she might have become my wife!"

"My sister and Uncle Qin are both good-looking, so their little sister must be pretty too. With my sister at home, I definitely won't run around or get lost."
