“We only come for a day each time, leaving the children eagerly waiting. They feel uncomfortable, and we feel uncomfortable too!”
"The dean is sick, that's why he's bloated. You all don't understand anything..."
"The older children are considerate of us and have gone to the woods behind the house to gather firewood. They should be back soon. As for the fact that there are only a few of us, none of us can stand staying here for five days!"
Coincidentally, just as she finished speaking, several older children carrying firewood walked in through the back door, hunching over and hurrying toward the kitchen.
After the explanation given by the dean and the staff member, the students immediately felt guilty and apologetic.
Ke Meiyu, however, had a cold smile on her lips.
She always trusted her intuition and judgment, and things were definitely not as the two of them said.
However, the dean and staff have become vigilant, and staff members are constantly observing the volunteers in secret, as if afraid of discovering any problems.
The students, instead of feeling guilty because of the staff's unpleasantness, became even more diligent in doing things.
Ke Meiyu and Qin Yuanjiu were assigned to wash the children's clothes and bedding. This was a deliberate arrangement by the group leader, who said it was to increase their tolerance for dirt and mess.
Ke Meiyu saw countless fleas jumping provocatively in front of her, lice falling off the quilt, and rats scurrying about in and out of the holes in the wall.
She and Qin Yuanjiu exchanged a glance, but neither of them moved.
"See? You're just asking for trouble, asking for it all on yourself," Qin Yuanjiu glanced at her indifferently.
Ke Meiyu glared back defiantly: "I'm a person who does big things, I shouldn't waste time on such trivial things as washing. Besides, this is the employees' daily work, or the children can do some things they are capable of when they are older, why does it have to be done by volunteers?"
"These are all bad habits they've developed from being spoiled. Should we continue to indulge them?"
Qin Yuanjiu raised an eyebrow: "Otherwise, what can you do now? You're currently a key person everyone's observing."
He glanced around.
Ke Meiyu also glanced over, and sure enough, the staff and her team members who came with her were turning their heads in this direction from time to time. It was as if if she didn't take action, someone would jump out and lecture her the next moment.
She clearly saw the smug, provocative mockery in the dean's eyes, as if to say, "So what if you guessed right? Nobody believes you, and you can't find any evidence!"
It's infuriating, so infuriating! She loves to eat everything, but she hates to suffer any loss.
Ke Meiyu pursed her lips, looking into the children's dark eyes, which should have been pure and kind, but were now filled with distrust, selfishness, and deep wariness.
With a flick of her eye, she held two talisman figures in her hand behind her back. With a gentle breath, they floated to the ground and slowly stretched out, transforming into the shapes of two people. At the same time, she slapped an invisibility talisman on herself and Qin Yuanjiu.
However, the two talisman-wielding figures were expressionless, their limbs stiff and motionless. Ke Meiyu grabbed Qin Yuanjiu's hand, made a cut with a knife, and applied some smear to Qin Yuanjiu's forehead.
Qin Yuanjiu No. 2's expression immediately became lively, and he walked forward with an air of aloofness to begin making the bed.
Ke Meiyu also gently touched her own talisman's forehead with her finger, and Meiyu No. 2 followed suit with a smile.
She chuckled and whispered in Qin Yuanjiu's ear, "Brother Jiu, I think there must be a lot of secrets hidden in this orphanage. Shall we take this opportunity to find them?"
Qin Yuanjiu held her hand. "Human desires are immeasurable; once touched, they become uncontrollable. This time you've uncovered the secret, and the dean and others have been replaced. How long can the next batch of employees hold out?"
"How many people can hold onto kindness for a lifetime and steadfastly carry it out?"
Ke Meiyu was taken aback, then turned to look at the children. It's easy to do one good deed, but it's really hard to do good deeds for a lifetime.
She was also somewhat bewildered.
In fact, she had always been averse to doing charity work. In her previous life, her family was so wealthy, and so many socialites held numerous charity events for the sake of their reputation, but she never attended one of them.
Because she is inherently wary of others, she doesn't trust that the money she gives out will actually reach those in dire need.
She has always believed in providing emergency relief rather than long-term support. Who knows if this charitable money will breed ungrateful wretches and parasites?
A small favor is appreciated, but a large one breeds resentment – an age-old truth!
The initial fervor of my heart is gradually cooling down, and I suddenly don't know what the point of my current persistence is.
Are we going to push these children, who have just emerged from the abyss and haven't even felt the warmth of life, into another cliff?
If it were her, she wouldn't want to climb around like that either!
Unable to sense the woman's movements, Qin Yuanjiu embraced her and chuckled softly, "Since you think there's a problem here, let's investigate what's going on. We'll then devise a feasible management method and submit it to the provincial government office. I think that as long as everything is standardized and all the conflicts are effectively resolved, the orphanage can operate in the direction you envision."
Ke Meiyu nodded vigorously, "Yes, Ninth Brother, you're right. There's always a solution to everything. The only problem is if we don't take action."
The two went to the office first, intending to start their search from the roster.
Fearing that students might wander into the wrong place or look for something, a staff member in the office pretended to write something, saying that he was filling out information forms for the children in preparation for vaccinations.
Although Ke Meiyu and Qin Yuanjiu were invisible and quite skilled, opening and closing the metal cabinet door still made noise. Fearing to alert the staff member, Ke Meiyu put a talisman on her to immobilize her.
