Chapter 128 Desperate

Did Zhao Yi find this place so quickly?

Jiang Bai looked towards the entrance and saw a shadow moving towards it. It was a man's shadow cast on the ground, but there were piles of debris there, so she couldn't see the person. But looking at the shadow, it didn't seem to be Zhao Yi.

Just as she was wondering, the lamp in the man's hand went out, and then the candle that Wang Mazi had casually put aside also went out, plunging the cellar into darkness, and everyone held their breath.

Jiang Bai only felt a sharp palm wind sweeping towards her, so she had no choice but to abandon Wang Mazi in front of her and immediately turn around and retreat.

The two exchanged a few blows in the darkness. The man gained no advantage over Jiang Bai and instead found himself struggling. He immediately turned and ran away.

Jiang Bai listened carefully and realized that Wang Mazi's rapid breathing was getting farther and farther away. The man had taken Wang Mazi away!

She pretended to fall into the trap today because she wanted to know who the second son's wife was up to and what earth-shattering plan she was plotting.

After learning it was Wang Mazi, she breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to find a chance to escape.

But now, a third person has appeared, and this person's martial arts skills are not low; he is not an ordinary person.

Jiang Bai didn't hesitate for long and chased after them immediately.

The man carrying the burden of Wang Mazi couldn't run very fast to begin with, and with Jiang Bai's martial arts skills being quite high, the distance between the two sides kept closing.

Jiang Bai was becoming increasingly certain that the person fleeing ahead was definitely one of the robbers who had escaped last time!

Thinking this, her determination to capture this person grew even stronger.

Just as they were about to catch the man, he suddenly stopped and threw the Wang Mazi in his hand over.

A heavy object was thrown in the darkness. Jiang Bai instinctively tried to dodge it, but that might have killed Wang Mazi.

Thinking of this, she reached out and caught the person in front of her. But in just a short while, several dark figures flew out from the side and surrounded Jiang Bai.

Jiang Bai only felt a sticky mess on Wang Mazi's body. Looking down in the dim moonlight, he could see that Wang Mazi's face was full of pain and his eyes were gradually becoming unfocused.

That man actually stabbed Wang Mazi on the spot. Was he trying to kill him to silence him? Did these two have some connection before?

Before Jiang Bai could ask anything, the man gestured to the people next to him to make a move.

Jiang Bai gripped the dagger in his hand, his eyes slightly cold, poised to strike.

Suddenly, a patch of light appeared on the path in the distance, flickering and leaping like stars, rushing towards them.

It really was Zhao Yi who came this time!

Seeing this, the man was still unwilling to give up and charged at Jiang Bai with fierce momentum. Jiang Bai was on guard at all times and naturally would not let him succeed. He dodged lightly and dealt with the attack with ease.

As the flames drew closer, they were soon able to see faces clearly through the light.

Those people were neither villagers nor guards, but government officials and soldiers. The Zhao family had actually reported it to the authorities!

The man who was fighting with Jiang Bai saw that things were not going well and immediately turned and ran. Several people next to him saw this and also rushed in that direction.

Jiang Bai wanted to follow, but someone called out to him from behind.

This delay allowed those people to walk away, but the soldiers who quickly arrived did not slacken their efforts. The leader was Lin Yong, who nodded to Jiang Bai and then led his soldiers directly past her to catch up.

It was Zhao Yi who called out to Jiang Bai. He held her hand with a worried look in his eyes, afraid that she would run away, while carefully checking her body for any injuries.

Only after confirming that she was not injured did he pull her into his arms.

"You have no idea how worried I was just now. I'm so glad you're alright, I'm so glad you're alright."

His large, warm hand covered the back of her head, and her expression subtly changed, even though she hadn't paid much attention to it at first.

The hand behind her head was trembling slightly, yet its warmth and calming effect were undeniable.

"I'm sorry, I startled you." She wrapped her arms around his back, feeling somewhat apologetic.

She was aware of the situation but pretended to fall into the trap. However, Zhao Yi didn't know that. He only knew that she was in danger and had been threatened by Wang Mazi with two notes. He was worried that something would happen to her and must have been terrified.

When Zhao Yi saw Jiang Bai fighting with the robbers, he roughly knew that she must have been plotting against him. She could have escaped much earlier, but she didn't, making people worry.

He was a little annoyed, but he couldn't bear to get angry with her. He just hugged her tighter and said sullenly, "I won't let you go out alone next time."

Jiang Bai rarely saw his childlike side, and smiled helplessly: "It's not a question of whether I can go out alone or not, the robbers haven't been caught yet."

Zhao Yi listened, then released her, moved the hand that was behind her head to her cheek, and gently stroked it: "You don't need to worry about anything from now on. You've suffered all day, so go back and rest early. Madam Lin heard that you were in trouble and came over anxiously. She's waiting for you at the Zhao family's place now. Go and see her, and then go home with her first."

He carefully gave her some instructions before turning around and chasing after the people who had run away.

If we cannot eliminate those robbers completely, there will likely be endless troubles to come.

Jiang Bai watched him leave. There were some soldiers chasing after him, but those robbers were just desperate and probably wouldn't cause any trouble. He should be safe. With that thought, she turned and walked towards the Zhao family's new residence.

The old house was uninhabited, so Wang Mazi must have delivered the threatening note with the deal to the new house, where Zhao Yi and his entire family were. Now, if Wang Linlin had to wait, it would be at the new house where news might come from.

When Jiang Bai returned to the new house, half of the lights in the courtyard had already been turned off. She didn't see Old Man Zhao or Old Lady Zhao. She guessed that the two of them wouldn't care about her life or death and were probably sleeping soundly right now.

The two Zhao brothers had been sent by Zhao Yi to look for someone and were not there. Only the second brother's wife was sitting on the doorstep dozing off, and the third brother's wife was keeping Wang Linlin company, saying some comforting words.

"Linlin." She called out to Wang Linlin, and the two people on the other side immediately looked at her.

Wang Linlin's eyes widened immediately in surprise, then she burst into tears of joy: "You scared me to death!"

She ran over and hugged Jiang Bai tightly.

Jiang Bai patted her back reassuringly: "I don't look like someone who would get into trouble. I'm very lucky. But you, your health isn't good to begin with. Going out in the cold winter wind will easily make you catch a cold."

Wang Linlin pushed her away and glared at her fiercely: "Isn't it because I was worried about you? Who told you to be so careless?"

When the second son's wife saw Jiang Bai return with his arms and legs all intact, she was immediately surprised.

Jiang Bai is standing here, but what about Wang Mazi? Did he get the money?

The thought of all that money made her unable to stay any longer, and she immediately lifted her skirt and ran outside.

The third son's wife looked at her retreating figure with a puzzled expression and asked, "Where are you going in the middle of the night?"

"I suddenly remembered I left something outside, I'll go look for it!"

She disappeared in the blink of an eye, and Jiang Bai narrowed his eyes, intending to follow her.
