Chapter 18 Big Business

Jiang Bai, determined to try anything, took advantage of a rare sunny day and carried a basket of medicinal herbs to the county town.

After being turned away last time, she was mentally prepared and knew that the medicinal herbs she had would not be easy to sell.

Sure enough, after much effort, they were met with several closed doors.

She ended up going to the largest clinic in the entire county because the success rate of selling her medicine there was the lowest.

Just as she stepped across the threshold, before she could even start selling anything, a little girl collapsed to the ground beside her. Jiang Bai quickly helped her up.

The young girl stood up, ignoring Jiang Bai, and then threw herself in front of an elderly man with a long beard, crying out, "Doctor, please, save my lady!"

A frail middle-aged woman stood to the side, covering her mouth with a handkerchief. After coughing a few times, she said weakly, "Never mind, Xiaolian, this is an old ailment of mine, it can't be cured."

"But now it's gotten worse," Xiaolian said, her voice trembling with tears.

The old doctor stroked his beard and said, "Please forgive me for being unable to help. If you are able, Madam, you can go to the capital to find a famous doctor."

“We’re from the capital…” Xiaolian blurted out.

The middle-aged woman interrupted her, her face filled with sorrow, and apologized to the doctor, saying, "I'm sorry, doctor, my illness is quite stubborn. I've been to many famous clinics, but none of them have cured me. I came here with my husband on business, and my condition just happened to worsen. My maid was only being so rude because she was worried about me."

Hearing her mistress's words, Xiaolian pouted and finally quieted down.

The two turned to leave, but Jiang Bai stopped them: "Madam, I can cure your illness."

Xiao Lian sized up Jiang Bai.

Jiang Bai was dressed in a coarse yellow cloth outfit. Her small face was pretty and charming. She carried a large basket on her shoulder, but her back was straight. She looked no more than sixteen years old.

Xiao Lian stretched out her hand to separate Jiang Bai from her wife, and asked warily, "Who are you?"

Jiang Bai smiled gently and said in a soft voice, "I also know some medical skills and am good at making medicinal cuisine. In my opinion, your wife's illness is a heart ailment, isn't it?"

In ancient times, heart disease was indeed incurable, as there were no conditions that supported surgery.

The woman was pale, with purplish lips, and she kept clutching her chest and coughing – all clear symptoms of heart disease.

Jiang Bai had just cured Granny Wang's heart ailment, and this was the time when she was most experienced. Although Granny Wang's symptoms were significantly milder than this lady's, she was confident that she could cure her.

Xiaolian didn't believe Jiang Bai. In her eyes, Jiang Bai was still a child. She had accompanied her wife to visit famous doctors all over the country, and all of them were elderly people with white hair. This proved that medical skills need time and experience to prove themselves.

She was unwilling to let her wife become the experiment of the man in front of her.

She reached out and shoved Jiang Bai out, muttering, "Don't think I don't know you overheard the doctor's conversation with us."

Jiang Bai stared wide-eyed innocently: "I just came in."

"I don't believe you either," Xiaolian said, turning to help her wife.

The two walked slowly outside, bypassed Jiang Bai, and got into the carriage.

Jiang Bai saw that the woman clearly had a short life ahead of her, and even though she was rude, he still felt compassion for her.

She chased after him out the door and said loudly, "I live in Zhao Family Village nearby. If you want to find me, come to the village and ask for the name Jiang Bai."

The carriage clattered away without a word being spoken.

Jiang Bai wasn't angry. She turned her head, just about to go back into the clinic to promote her medicinal herbs, when the middle-aged man she had seen before who wanted to buy her herbs stood in front of her again.

Seeing Jiang Bai's wary expression, the middle-aged man couldn't help but smile wryly and say, "Young lady, I genuinely want to do business with you."

He stretched out his hands to show Jiang Bai that he had no weapons and no malicious intent.

Jiang Bai frowned and asked, "Who are you?"

The middle-aged man said, "My name is Ren Yunzhou. You can go and inquire about the Ren family..."

Just then, a passerby who recognized him walked by and greeted him: "Second Master Ren, busy, huh?"

"Yes." Ren Yunzhou smiled and nodded at the other person.

Jiang Bai reluctantly believed his sincerity and asked, "So you want to buy my medicinal herbs?"

“Yes,” Ren Yunzhou said seriously, “I am making this request very seriously.”

"What kind do you need?" Jiang Bai looked up, took the basket down to show him, and asked, "How many do you need?"

“I want it all, and not only that, I need a thousand catties,” Ren Yunzhou replied.

"A thousand catties?" Jiang Bai repeated the number, thinking he had misheard.

She carried such a large basket, but it only weighed about 20 kilograms, which she had collected over half a month.

Ren Yunzhou confirmed the weight of 1,000 jin and gestured with his fingers to indicate a number: "I will buy it at this price."

Jiang Bai's breath hitched for two seconds.

Although the number Ren Yunzhou gestured was not as high as she had initially expected, it was more than ten times higher than the prices quoted by various medical clinics.

Jiang Bai's first thought upon hearing this incredible windfall was: Is this a scam?

Faced with Jiang Bai's suspicious gaze, Ren Yunzhou quickly said, "I can pay a deposit."

"How much should I pay?" Jiang Bai asked hesitantly.

After considering it for a moment, Ren Yunzhou said, "Pay 80%."

Jiang Bai:?

Jiang Bai tentatively asked, "Is it 80% of the total payment?"

Ren Yunzhou was taken aback for a moment: "Otherwise what?"

Jiang Bai roared inwardly: My luck has finally turned around! I've finally met this kind of naive and innocent boss!

Seeing that she didn't speak, Ren Yunzhou added, "If you're worried, I can give you the money right now."

With that, he took her back to his home.

This was the first time Jiang Bai had seen a grand mansion in ancient times after he traveled through time.

The Ren family was truly wealthy, and Ren Yunzhou was indeed the second master. He led Jiang Bai through layers of buildings and courtyards until they reached his own courtyard. He took out a bundle of silver from his study and handed it to her without even counting it.

Jiang Bai was shocked by the weight of the silver in her hand. She asked, "After deducting the twenty catties I handed over today, when will you come to collect the remaining nine hundred catties of medicinal herbs?"

Ren Yunzhou asked, "Approximately how long will it take to prepare?"

"Can I prepare it for you within a month?"

Ren Yunzhou nodded.

Jiang Bai asked, "Do we need to sign a contract?"

"No need, I trust you," Ren said, seemingly naive and innocent.

When Jiang Bai was led out by the servants, it felt as if he was walking on clouds, giving him an unreal feeling.

She no longer wanted to think about whether it was a scam or not; her only worry now was how to control herself from absconding with the money and turning this into a scam—a scam where Ren Yunzhou was the victim.

This really tests a person's self-control!
