Chapter 22 Head-to-Head

The village chief frowned deeply.

He couldn't understand why other families were peaceful and quiet, while Jiang Bai, this woman, was always causing trouble, practically making a scene every few days.

If it weren't for the fact that the whole village was being taken care of by Zhao Yi, he really wanted to grab Jiang Bai by the neck and send her back to her parents' home.

According to him, Zhao Yi is a perfectly good man, but he has this one flaw: a wife should be virtuous, and the wife he blindly married has nothing to do with the word "virtuous".

His face was stern, and his beard was sticking up, but unfortunately, his messy hair from just waking up made him look far from authoritative.

He coughed lightly and asked, "What's going on in the middle of the night?"

Jiang Bai covered his face, as if he had collapsed: "I heard noises outside in the middle of the night. When I got up to check, I saw Diao Yi sneaking in..."

"You're talking nonsense!" Upon seeing her husband's miserable state, Li Chunhua pushed through the dense crowd of onlookers, rushed to the front, pointed at Jiang Bai's nose, and asked with slight unease, "What did you do to my husband?"

Jiang Bai sniffled pitifully and said with a heavy nasal tone, "I don't know either. He probably stumbled in in the dark, didn't see where he was going, tripped, and then fell unconscious."

After thinking for a moment, she added, "I was afraid that if he woke up, it would be bad for my son and me, so I simply tied him up with a rope."

This was no simple binding; everyone gasped in astonishment. Even the tight bindings used when slaughtering pigs were no more elaborate than this!

Li Chunhua didn't have time to argue with Jiang Bai. She pounced on Diao Yi, wanting to untie him, but she didn't know where to start.

Jiang Bai used a specially learned pig-tying knot to tie people up; the more they struggled, the tighter the knot became. Now, Li Chunhua only tugged at it a few times, and the rope around Diao Yi's neck tightened, causing him to wake up with a low groan.

Diao Yi never expected that when he opened his eyes, he would be surrounded by a dense crowd of people.

He was dazed for half a minute before he remembered the events before he fainted. He gritted his teeth and looked at Jiang Bai: "You actually knocked me out?"

Aunt Wang sneered upon hearing this: "How could Jiang Bai, such a frail young woman, knock you unconscious and remain unharmed? I think you've done too many bad things, and Heaven is punishing you. You should know that those who do many evil deeds will surely perish."

She dragged out the last word, "毙" (bì), making eighty or ninety turns in the pronunciation.

Jiang Bai also said, "You clearly fell down by yourself."

She used all her strength in that chop, and she couldn't admit it now, she would rather die than admit it, otherwise she was afraid the couple would extort money from her for medical expenses.

She took the initiative and asked, "What do you want from my house in the middle of the night?"

Diao Yi's eyes darted around, and he grinned lewdly: "You were the one who said you were feeling empty and lonely, and asked me to sneak over at night to comfort you. Now that you've been discovered, you're denying it to the death?"

Aunt Wang couldn't help but interject, "It was Jiang Bai who took the initiative to call them."

This is very different from being discovered.

Diao Yi glared at Wang Da Niang. He had never found the old woman annoying before, but he wondered what had gotten into her today that made her so talkative.

Li Chunhua glared fiercely at Jiang Bai: "Stop making excuses, I know you seduced my man."

Jiang Bai was stunned. She hadn't expected Li Chunhua to still be helping Diao Yi at this point. Her expression was a little strange: "This doesn't make sense!"

"I seduced Diao Yi, so Diao Yi came to my house in the middle of the night. Didn't he take the bait?"

Li Chunhua retorted, "So what? Diao Yi is a man, he won't suffer any loss."

Diao Yi is a man who doesn't stand to be taken advantage of, but you're his wife, so you're the one who's at a disadvantage!

Jiang Bai was amazed to find such a spirited man.

Li Chunhua was certainly angry, but things had come to this point, and getting angry was useless. The important thing was to get her husband out of trouble, and the couple would settle accounts later.

Looking at Jiang Bai's slender waist and fair face, she gritted her teeth in hatred.

She didn't know why Jiang Bai always went against her family. Why was she always making things so difficult for her? Could it be that she really had her eye on Diao Yi?

Thinking of this, Li Chunhua broke out in a cold sweat.

If Jiang Bai really intended to seduce Diao Yi, he would succeed every time. Diao Yi now often mentions the name of this little harlot at home.

Although he said he was angry and wanted revenge, Li Chunhua had shared a bed with him for decades, so how could she not know his little scheme?

It's obvious he's trying to take advantage of the opportunity to get revenge!

Li Chunhua looked at Jiang Bai again, her eyes filled with venom.

Jiang Bai looked innocently at everyone: "Everyone, please judge for yourselves. According to Li Chunhua, I seduced Diao Yi, and Diao Yi took the bait. So, the question remains: why did I tie him up and then call the village chief over?"

Li Chunhua retorted, "Diao Yi didn't take the bait. He came over to make things clear to you that he only loves me, and he has already informed me about this."

"You probably acted this way because you were angry and resentful after his rejection, and because your love turned to hate!"

Jiang Bai couldn't help but sneer, "With your man's looks, he could fry three pounds of lard in a pot. Why would I choose him over Zhao Yi? Are you kidding me?"

Although she had never met Zhao Yi, given his status as the male protagonist of the novel, he couldn't possibly be worse looking than Diao Yi, right?

When Zhao Yi was mentioned, everyone recalled Zhao Yi's appearance and fell silent.

That's a world of difference.

"No one can eat spoiled food after finishing a feast of delicacies, right?" Jiang Bai curled his lip and looked at Diao Yi with disdain.

Upon hearing this and seeing the villagers' suggestive glances, Diao Yi was so angry that he was panting heavily.

His appearance was so unbearable that everyone turned away from him.

Jiang Bai didn't want to dwell on Diao Yi's appearance any longer; if they chatted a little longer, they could skip breakfast.

She stepped forward, touched Diao Yi's clothes, pulled a tinderbox from his collar, and asked, "Why did you bring this to my house?"

Diao Yi retorted stubbornly, "I'm afraid of the dark, so can't I even carry a tinderbox with me?"

Jiang Bai then pulled out a small bottle of oil that had just been found during the body search, and shook it: "Afraid of the dark, you still need to carry oil?"

When the tinderbox was ignited with oil, everyone suddenly realized what was going on and began to whisper among themselves.

"He wouldn't be planning to burn the Jiang family down, would he?"

"No, this isn't a side room. They're probably just jealous of Jiang Bai's money and want to burn some of her medicine."

"That won't work either. Who knows if he can control it so that only the medicine burns? It's windy now..."

These words stirred the crowd to a fever pitch.

They didn't judge who was right or wrong between Jiang Bai and Diao Yi; they were just there to watch the show. However, Diao Yi's actions endangered the safety of every one of their families.

It's been windy lately, and he brought oil with him. If a fire starts, it won't be easy to put out, and the surrounding houses could easily be affected.

Thinking of this, the families living near Jiang Bai glared angrily at Diao Yi.

Diao Yi panicked and stammered, pointing at Jiang Bai, "This bottle of oil isn't mine, it's you, you framed me."
