Chapter 26 Encounter with Bandits

Lin Yong drove away the dozens of kneeling doctors, leaving only Jiang Bai as the only useful one.

Seeing that his wife had woken up, Lin Yong's expression softened considerably, and a slight smile appeared on his lips: "Miss Jiang, I really have to thank you for saving Linlin's life today."

The general's wife's maiden name was Wang Linlin.

When Wang Linlin saw Jiang Bai enter, she struggled to sit up, forced a smile, and greeted him.

Xiao Lian quickly went over and helped Wang Linlin lie down again.

Although the little girl was headstrong and naive, she genuinely cared about Wang Linlin.

Jiang Bai approached the bedside, his tone soothing: "Today's treatment has only temporarily relieved the heart ailment; it will take a long time to completely cure it."

Upon hearing the word "cure," Lin Yong's eyes lit up.

Even the imperial physicians dared not utter those two words, yet the person before them spoke them with ease, as casually as a hen placing an order.

Lin Yong said, "I'll have to trouble Dr. Jiang from now on."

Jiang Bai smiled, revealing his teeth: "You're welcome, General Lin."

It was getting late, and Jiang Bai was eager to go home. After giving a few brief instructions, he expressed his desire to return.

Xiaolian saw the person out.

Jiang Bai instructed, "Pay special attention to Madam's mood and try to prevent her from having any worries or depression. As for her diet, keep it light and have her eat medicinal cuisine instead of regular lunch. I will come over every morning to prepare it."

Xiaolian nodded, remembering every single word clearly.

Jiang Bai rode in a small donkey cart and returned home as night fell.

-

Just as Jiang Bai's figure disappeared at the end of the road, Tan Ji, at Zhao Yi's prompting, knocked on the door of the general's mansion.

Xiao Lian stared wide-eyed in surprise when she saw the visitors: "Young Master Zhao, Young Master Tan, what brings you here today?"

Zhao Yi smiled but remained silent.

Xiao Lian didn't necessarily need to know the answer. Seeing that he wouldn't tell her, she obediently went back to report to the general.

The three men sat in the reception room for a while in silence, drinking tea, before Lin Yong spoke up: "Mr. Zhao, you wouldn't come here without a reason..."

Zhao Yi interrupted him directly and asked, "What do you want with Lin Bai?"

Lin Yong was taken aback: "You know Lin Bai? She's the doctor my wife just hired."

Tan Ji replied with a wry smile on Zhao Yi's behalf: "She is my wife."

Lin Yong paused for a moment before realizing what Tan Ji meant, and was instantly speechless: "She...she's actually your...your wife?"

Zhao Yi slurped his tea.

Lin Yong exclaimed, "Such a resolute yet frail woman, I never imagined she would already be married."

He had no time to investigate Jiang Bai's identity. Jiang Bai was a name she herself had given herself, and everyone inside and outside the General's Mansion thought she was still unmarried.

Otherwise, people wouldn't keep calling her "Miss Jiang" or "Miss Jiang" back and forth.

No wonder Jiang Bai wasn't intimidated at all.

Zhao Yi put down his teacup: "What do you mean?"

"It's nothing," Lin Yong said with a dry laugh, trying to smooth things over. "What I was trying to say was, where did you find this wife? It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say she's a reincarnation of Hua Tuo (a legendary Chinese physician). Many doctors said they couldn't do anything about Linlin's old ailment, but Jiang Bai came and prescribed some medicine. She only drank one dose and immediately woke up. Now she can even sit up easily."

"If we had known about your relationship beforehand, we wouldn't have been so rude in bringing you back. We apologize for that." This was an admission of weakness.

Zhao Yi's timing this time was perfect.

He and Lin Yong had been working together for some time. He took the initiative to reveal to Lin Yong that Jiang Bai and he were husband and wife. Even if Jiang Bai upset Lin Yong afterwards, Lin Yong would have to think twice about this relationship.

Zhao Yi raised his teacup again: "Jiang Bai is a treasure I found."

Tan Ji clicked his tongue; his tooth hurt.

Zhao Yi gave him a cold glance and began to talk about business.

-

In the following days, Jiang Bai would go to the General's Mansion in the morning to prepare medicinal meals and decoct the medicine. After watching Wang Linlin finish eating and checking her over, he would rush back. In the afternoon, he would go to the mountain to collect herbs, soak them in spiritual liquid overnight, and then air-dry them the next morning.

I'm so busy, I'm spinning like a top.

Fortunately, a week later, Ren Yunzhou managed to gather the medicinal herbs. Jiang Bai spent an afternoon delivering the remaining herbs to the Ren residence in a small donkey cart.

Ren Yunzhou immediately settled the remaining payment.

He seemed to have heard some rumors and learned that Jiang Bai was treating the general's wife. His expression became even more ingratiating. He didn't ask Jiang Bai if he was willing to work at his clinic, giving Jiang Bai some freedom. In addition, he gave Jiang Bai an extra 10% of the final payment.

Jiang Bai swayed as he walked towards the village, humming a tune.

As she walked, the sense of vigilance she had developed from her ten years of life in the apocalypse kicked in; she could sense a dangerous gaze from behind, filled with malice and greed.

Her eyes darted around, and taking advantage of the fact that the people behind her weren't paying attention, she quietly threw the silver she had earned that day under a tree.

She hadn't been throwing it away for long when she was stopped by two thugs wielding knives.

The thugs, one fat and one thin, one tall and one short, the tall one holding a knife at Jiang Bai, said: "Robbery."

Jiang Bai obediently raised his hands: "I have no money."

“I don’t believe it,” the tall man gestured to the short man, “go over and search him.”

The two men went over and did a quick search; they found she didn't have a single penny on her.

"Impossible, I saw Master Ren give you the money." The tall man thought for a moment and said with certainty.

The short man raised the dagger in his hand and brought it to Jiang Bai's neck: "Tell me, where did you put all that silver?"

The two of them looked vicious, with long, thin lines on their faces, clearly indicating they had been involved in murder cases.

Fearing that the other party might accidentally hurt him, Jiang Bai quickly said, "I left the silver on the way. I'll take you there right away."

As long as the green hills remain, there will always be firewood to burn.

She got off the carriage, led the little donkey back, and walked to the tree where she had just thrown the silver. She pointed to it from afar and said, "That's where I threw it."

After saying that, he looked closely and found that there was nothing there.

Jiang Bai was dumbfounded: Where is that bundle of silver?

The tall man instantly flew into a rage: "Are you kidding us?"

"Really, no," Jiang Bai blinked innocently. "It was just here a moment ago. Was it stolen by someone?"

"I don't believe you for a second." The short man rushed up and pointed his dagger at her angrily. "Brother, I don't think this woman is telling the truth."

"Since you have no money, you can compensate with your body." The tall man looked her up and down several times with a lewd gaze.

Upon hearing this, Jiang Bai secretly got out of the car and kicked the donkey hard in the rear, instantly sending the beast running away.

If a fight breaks out later, the village chief's donkey cannot be damaged. She already has no money left, and if she has to pay for the donkey as well, she will be truly bankrupt.

The donkey brayed and ran away. The short man, afraid that someone would hear the noise, rushed forward to try to subdue Jiang Bai.

Jiang Bai stepped back and kicked away the short man's dagger.

Seeing this, the tall man charged over menacingly.
