Chapter 28 Getting into Trouble

Wang Xiufen knew that the people at the gambling den were not to be trifled with, and that this matter couldn't be resolved by her throwing a tantrum.

She immediately stopped sleeping and walked with her bound feet to Jiang Bai's village.

When they arrived at the entrance of the Zhao family's old house, Jiang Bai had just taken his medicine and was still unconscious.

Fearing discovery by the villagers, Zhao Yi locked the door. The two children heard the knocking and, upon seeing that the guard said it was Wang Xiufen, remained silent.

Wang Xiufen knocked on the door for a long time, but there was no response. She sat by the gate for a while, and a villager passed by and asked, "Auntie, are you looking for Jiang Bai?"

“Yes, yes,” Wang Xiufen looked up blankly, “I need to talk to my daughter urgently.”

The villagers thought for a moment and said, "She went to the county town early yesterday, and we haven't seen her and her two children since. They're probably staying in the county town and not at home."

Zhao Yi carried Jiang Bai home discreetly, so no one noticed that Jiang Bai had returned.

Wang Xiufen made a quick decision and changed her position. She sat down in a secluded spot at the village entrance, where she could see people coming and going at any time. She was going to ambush Jiang Bai.

Jiang Bai didn't manage to stop them, but he did manage to stop the servants sent by General Lin Yong.

The servant had never met Jiang Bai, only knew the name. Seeing an old woman sitting in the sun at the village entrance, he went over and asked, "Auntie, do you know where Jiang Bai's house is?"

"Jiang Bai?" Upon hearing this name, Wang Xiufen's ears perked up. "What do you want with her?"

"It's like this, Doctor Jiang Bai is treating my lady's illness. She was supposed to come today to prepare a medicinal meal, but she didn't come. My lady asked me to check if there was anything wrong." The servant said without any suspicion.

Wang Xiufen knew that Jiang Bai was making medicinal meals for others.

Some villagers also went to Jiang Bai's place to eat medicinal cuisine. According to them, a meal there costs a full 500 coins. And that's just the price for ordinary villagers. If it were for high-ranking officials and nobles, the price would probably be even higher.

She went to ask, and found that those medicinal dishes were just ordinary meals.

So she couldn't understand why Jiang Bai, who made money so quickly, couldn't help her younger brother. She had truly raised an ungrateful child.

Thinking of the price of the medicinal cuisine, Wang Xiufen swallowed hard. What Jiang Bai could do, she, as Jiang Bai's mother, could also do.

The servant in front of her was dressed in fine servant's clothes, so Jiang Bai, the customer, must be of high status. Since Jiang Bai wasn't here, and it wasn't easy for her to make a special trip, why couldn't she take over this business and make some money?

Thinking of this, Wang Xiufen chuckled twice and said, "Jiang Bai isn't here, so I'm her mother."

The servants laughed, "That's quite a coincidence."

Wang Xiufen said, "Your wife has already told me how to make the medicinal cuisine, which is why I was waiting for you at the village entrance. Come with me."

The man had no suspicions and followed Wang Xiufen to Jiang Bainiang's house.

Wang Xiufen carefully cooked several dishes, including a meat dish, and added plenty of lard to the vegetarian dishes.

When she had the servants take it away, Wang Xiufen instructed them, "If Madam needs to eat medicinal food again tomorrow, she can just come here to get it."

The servant nodded.

Wang Xiufen couldn't help but add, "We've always settled the cost of these medicinal meals daily."

The servant carefully noted it down. There was no need for the general's mansion to embezzle the doctor's money for medicine. He assured her, "Madam, I will give you the money tomorrow."

Wang Xiufen was overjoyed.

She didn't even wait until the next day. That afternoon, Lin Yong brought a squad of soldiers and surrounded Jiang Bai's family home.

Wang Xiufen trembled with fear and asked, "Who are you?"

"Where is Jiang Bai?" Lin Yong asked angrily, his eyebrows furrowing.

Wang Xiufen caught a glimpse of the servant who had come to collect the medicinal meal that morning. The servant had clearly been beaten with a board; his clothes were soaked in blood on the back of his buttocks. When he saw her, he was so angry that he wanted to grind his teeth to dust.

Before Wang Xiufen could dodge, the man pointed at her and shouted, "General, she's the one who gave me the medicinal meal. She claims to be Jiang Bai's mother."

—General?

Wang Xiufen's legs went weak, and she sat down on the ground.

Wang Linlin's condition is not good.

Jiang Bai was late in arriving, so the general's mansion sent people out to look for him while they brewed the medicine Jiang Bai had left behind yesterday.

Wang Linlin drank a bowl, but the effect was not as obvious as yesterday.

That's obvious. Without the nourishment of the spiritual elixir, the medicine's efficacy would be reduced by more than a hundred times. For Wang Linlin, who was seriously ill and bedridden, this dosage was no less than a tickle.

The medicine didn't work, and the "Jiang Bai's medicinal cuisine" that the servants brought back was all meat. Wang Linlin endured the nausea and ate a few bites, but before she could put down her chopsticks, she felt a throbbing pain in her chest and lay down again.

Lin Yong was so enraged that he almost chopped someone up.

Wang Xiufen suspected that there might be something wrong with the medicinal meal.

She couldn't understand why God was so unfair. They could cook whatever they wanted, but Jiang Bai's food could be sold as medicinal cuisine at a high price, while her food would worsen people's illnesses.

Unfortunately, it was the general's wife who suffered the most. If they found out that she knew nothing, she would probably lose her head.

Seeing that she didn't speak, Lin Yong repeated, "Where is Jiang Bai?"

"I don't know either," Wang Xiufen stammered.

"Did she ask you to make the medicinal meal for lunch today?"

Wang Xiufen pursed her lips and nodded when she heard the question.

She wanted to live.

Lin Yong saw through the scheme and narrowed his eyes, saying, "You have half a day to find Jiang Bai and cure my wife's illness, or else..."

Wang Xiufen took a deep breath and nodded vigorously.

Lin Yong left with the words, "She knows where to find me," and then turned and left with his men.

-

After hearing what had happened, Jiang Bai's eyes showed no less despair than Wang Xiufen's.

It's not the god-like opponents you should fear, but the pig-like teammates.

She had finally managed to help him recover, but Wang Xiufen's intervention caused everything to go back to square one.

Ignoring her weakened body and fever, she immediately got out of bed and went outside.

She hadn't walked far when she stumbled and knelt on the ground.

—After sleeping for a day and a night, and only drinking a few bowls of medicine during that time, even a healthy person would be exhausted.

To save her own life, Wang Xiufen immediately said, "Girl, I'll go hire an oxcart for you." At this point, she wasn't afraid of spending money.

Jiang Bai strolled along the oxcart until he arrived at the general's mansion.

Xiaolian was squatting at the door waiting for her. When she saw her, she jumped three feet high, lifted her off the car, and practically dragged her inside.

Wang Linlin was still in the same bedroom as yesterday, with Lin Yong standing beside her, his face full of worry.

Jiang Bai went in and, without even bothering to bow, first checked the patient's condition and then breathed a sigh of relief.

Fortunately, things haven't gotten to the worst-case scenario.

She immediately brewed the medicine again and cooked a real medicinal meal, using spiritual liquid without hesitation.

After taking the medicine and eating some medicinal food, Wang Linlin's complexion gradually regained some color, and her condition improved significantly.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
