Chapter 32 Refusal to Hire

After renting the house, Jiang Bai went to Ren's residence to find Ren Yunzhou.

The housekeeper remembered Jiang Bai, smiled warmly at her, and said, "The Second Master is at the clinic now, not at home."

Jiang Bai asked the butler about the location of the clinic, declined his offer to send someone to take her there, and wandered over by herself.

Upon arriving at the clinic, Jiang Bai couldn't help but click his tongue in amazement. The Ren family was indeed wealthy and powerful, as the clinic was located in the most prosperous area. Jiang Bai had inquired about slightly less desirable locations, and the minimum rent was fifty taels of silver per month.

However, the number of customers is also quite considerable.

Jiang Bai observed that Ren Yunzhou must have taken away a lot of staff members, and had probably become the most hated person in the nearby clinic.

She kept observing in her heart, and as soon as she entered the door, she bumped into a young man who looked like an accountant.

The junior accountant must have recognized her. Upon seeing her, his eyes lit up, and he called out to the back, "Second Master, Miss Jiang is here."

Ren Yunzhou, sweating profusely, ran in while checking the medicinal herbs in the backyard. He grinned at Jiang Bai and said, "Ready to start work?"

Jiang Bai waved his hand: "I just came to take a look."

Ren Yunzhou treated her like family. Hearing this, he wiped the sweat from his brow and said, "I have some things to attend to here. I'll have the accountant show you around."

The accountant immediately agreed.

They watched Ren Yunzhou rush into the backyard until his figure disappeared.

The accountant began to show Jiang Bai around.

He was quite clever, looked young, and was lively and active. Pointing to a whole wall of drawers filled with Chinese medicine, he said, "Miss Jiang, thank you for selling us the medicinal herbs. I don't know why, but our customers all say that our herbs are more effective than others."

That's natural; the elixir wasn't used for nothing.

Jiang Bai looked at him more and more familiarly: "Have I seen you somewhere before?"

The young accountant scratched his head: "Miss Jiang, I used to be a servant to the Second Master. After the clinic opened, we needed an accountant. He saw that I had studied for a few years and could do accounting, so he asked me to help out."

Now that Ren Yunzhou has broken away from his elder brother and is living on his own, he realized how precious money is within ten days. He immediately decided that the people around him must be used to their fullest potential, and every penny saved on hiring costs is a penny saved.

Jiang Bai nodded, then asked in a low voice, "Second Master has been living off the First Master for over forty years, why does he suddenly want to improve himself?"

Seeing him personally taking inventory, he really looked quite professional.

The junior accountant objected upon hearing this: "What do you mean by more than forty years? The Second Master is only thirty-eight, still a handsome young man, only his beard makes him look a little old."

Jiang Bai pursed his lips, not wanting to refute him.

This is purely a biased view of Ren Yunzhou. If you honestly ask yourself, Ren Yunzhou and these five handsome young men are completely unrelated.

Jiang Bai glanced around and cautiously approached the small accounting room: "So why did he go out into business? Is there an irreconcilable conflict with the master? Are they going to separate the family?"

Seeing her genuine curiosity, the junior accountant had no choice but to say, "The family hasn't separated; the two brothers just had a fight."

"Why are you arguing?" Jiang Bai asked, his eyes wide.

The junior accountant said, "Because the boss doesn't want to get married."

Jiang Bai exclaimed in surprise, as this was the first time he had ever encountered a group of people who did not marry in ancient times.

Afterwards, Jiang Bai learned what had happened from the accountant's brief description.

Ren Yunzhou was not without marriage. His first wife was chosen by Master Ren, strictly following the arrangement of his parents and the matchmaker. He also took three concubines.

His wife was virtuous and kind, and his concubine was charming and lovely. For a time, he felt that he was the happiest person in the world.

Until his wife became pregnant, she had a difficult childbirth. At the same time his daughter took her first breath and cried loudly, his wife passed away.

It was later discovered that the three concubines were all responsible for the wife's difficult childbirth. They had each used some underhanded methods within the inner quarters to jointly cause this tragedy.

Ren Yunzhou was heartbroken. He dismissed his concubines and devoted himself to raising his daughter, no longer caring about other women.

Master Ren disapproved of his timid and fearful nature, having been bitten once and now, and often urged him to remarry. However, when his threats failed, the two had a fight.

However, it could also be said that Ren Yunzhou was simply venting his anger due to his own incompetence. After doing so, he stormed off, immediately declaring that he was going to start his own business.

After listening, Jiang Bai clicked his tongue in amazement and asked, "Now that the clinic is doing well, will Second Master Ren really leave the Ren family?"

The accountant shook his head: "How could that be? The master would definitely not agree."

"Why?" Jiang Bai asked, his eyes wide.

The accountant said matter-of-factly, "The eldest master has six sons, and the third master has five; none of them have daughters." Ren Yunzhou's daughter is the apple of the family's eye, as rare as a national treasure.

"If the second master wants to leave, he can only leave with nothing. The young lady must stay."

How could Ren Yunzhou, a doting father, possibly abandon his daughter? He misses her so much that he cries when he doesn't see her during the day.

Jiang Bai's mouth dropped open. It was already shocking enough that his sister-in-law had nine brothers, but this young lady had eleven.

She had already silently mourned for her future husband.

After Ren Yunzhou returned with the goods, Jiang Bai and the accountant tacitly stopped chatting.

Ren Yunzhou had no idea that in less than half an hour, his servant had already emptied his pockets.

He pointed to a few spots with a hint of pride and asked Jiang Bai, "Have you looked at all of these? Are they alright?"

"Excellent." Jiang Bai gave a thumbs up.

Ren Yunzhou then showed her several details in detail before leading her to the reception room in the backyard and asking, "So, what's your decision?"

Jiang Bai wouldn't come to the temple without a reason, so his visit today must mean that something has been resolved.

Jiang Bai nodded and said, "I've thought about it. Practicing medicine at the clinic isn't my forte. My forte is medicinal cuisine." Ren Yunzhou knew about her using medicinal cuisine to treat and save lives.

"Furthermore, if I go to the county town, the supply of medicinal herbs may be completely cut off."

Ren Yunzhou nodded. Although he was uneducated, he had a natural talent for it, perhaps due to his family background. He was very good at understanding the nuances of facial expressions.

The initial decision to reserve a place for Jiang Bai at the clinic was to cultivate a good relationship with her in order to ensure the supply of medicinal herbs.

If you disregard the other person's wishes and force them to come over, it will be counterproductive.

Thinking of this, he nodded: "Okay."

“Then I would like to order another thousand catties of medicinal herbs from you—oh no, it would be best to order two thousand catties.”

Jiang Bai gritted his teeth. After refusing their kindness, he shouldn't refuse their supply request as well.

Thinking about the workload of 2,000 jin, she gritted her teeth and squeezed out a "good" through gritted teeth.

Ren Yunzhou was overjoyed when he saw that she had agreed. He pretended to comfort her, saying, "It's okay, take your time, no rush."
