As for her mother, Wang Xiufen, she was dressed like a typical rural woman, with her eyes darting around, desperately trying to peek into the house, which made her repulsive.
"Sister, you're finally back! Mom and I were just about to come see you, but this brat blocked us from the door. I'm so angry!" Jiang Cheng smiled as soon as he saw her.
Jiang Bai glanced sideways and saw Zhao Ping'an's flustered expression, but didn't say anything.
But that one look chilled him to the bone. He knew he was doomed; the wicked woman knew, and he was sure to be in big trouble.
Zhao Ping'an was worried and indignant at the same time. All these things in the house were bought with money sent back by his father, so why did these two people keep coming over to take them away?
A jumble of random thoughts flashed through his mind, and his eyes stung slightly.
Jiang Bai had no time to pay attention to his little thoughts. He turned to look at Jiang Cheng and asked bluntly, "You guys came back this time for more than just to see me, right?"
Jiang Cheng smiled and said directly, "That's right, Mother hasn't been feeling well lately, so I wanted to borrow some money from you to go to the city to see her. Didn't my brother-in-law send some money home yesterday?"
really.
Jiang Bai sneered inwardly, wanting to kick the two of them out, but he also knew that filial piety was paramount in this world, and people could be easily swayed by gossip. If he were to be branded as a harsh parent, he would be the subject of gossip and criticism in the future.
Suppressing his displeasure, he put on a troubled expression and said, "Mother is sick? But... but... I didn't receive the money yesterday, what should I do?"
"What?" Wang Xiufen interrupted abruptly, scolding, "How could that be, you brat, are you lying to me? You heartless wretch, I'm your mother. If I hadn't raised you from infancy, would you be living such a good life? It's not like I'm not going to pay you back the money I borrowed. Among all the girls in the surrounding villages, none are as stingy as you."
Jiang Bai felt a deep sense of sarcasm, but feigned grievance on the surface, "Mother, how could you think of me like that? When I had money before, wasn't it always money I painstakingly saved up to lend to you? This time, I really didn't receive any."
This mother and son keep saying they need to borrow money, but they've never paid it back. Their current attitude is no different from outright robbery!
However, there is at least one advantage to being stubborn: every time you borrow money, you can leave an IOU.
They thought that since the original owner wouldn't dare ask them to repay the money anyway, the IOU was practically worthless, and it would even preserve their good reputation. But what they didn't expect was that Jiang Bai had changed his soul and was no longer the weak and easily bullied brother-supporting demon he once was.
Since we have the IOUs, we'll make them pay back all that money sooner or later!
Upon hearing this, and seeing Jiang Cheng's aggrieved expression, which seemed genuine, Wang Xiufen exchanged a glance with him and finally believed her.
Her daughter has been slow-witted since childhood and can't even lie. She used to be very obedient, so if she says she didn't receive the money, she probably really didn't.
After thinking for a moment, Wang Xiufen reluctantly said, "Alright then, when you send the silver back from there, remember to send it to me. It doesn't have to be much, just seven or eight taels will do."
There really aren't many.
Zhao Yi would send back ten taels of silver every month, and she would ask for seven or eight taels.
A chill ran through Jiang Bai's heart, but he remained outwardly calm, even seeming to breathe a sigh of relief as he smiled and said, "Alright, Mother, don't worry."
Seeing this, Wang Xiufen reluctantly nodded. Having not gotten any money, she didn't intend to leave, her gaze drifting unnoticed into their house.
Seeing the chicken Jiang Bai was carrying, her eyes lit up immediately. "You bought a chicken today? That's perfect. We haven't had any meat at home for several meals. Hurry up and bring it over. I'll stew it for your brother to help him recover."
Upon hearing this, Zhao Ping'an didn't even lift his eyelids. This kind of thing had happened countless times in the past, and Jiang Bai would definitely give it to him.
“Mother, this chicken was originally meant to be offered to you.” Jiang Bai did not refuse.
Just as Zhao Ping'an was about to sneer, his hand was suddenly grabbed. Then, he heard Jiang Bai say embarrassedly, "It's Mother. Zhao Laoda hasn't sent any money back. We haven't been able to afford to eat these past few days. How about I take the chickens and go back with you to stay for a couple of days?"
Wang Xiufen had just reached out with a smile on her face when she heard what came after her, and her movements stopped abruptly. "What did you say?"
Her eyebrows shot up. "How can that be? You know what our family's situation is. Are you going to sleep on the roof when we go back? No way. Figure it out yourself. If all else fails, sell those two burdens!"
Jiang Bai seemed taken aback by her refusal, and after a moment of stunned silence, he said in surprise, "Mother, but..."
"No buts!" Wang Xiufen didn't give him a chance to speak at all, afraid that she would be taken advantage of. She didn't even bother to take the chicken, and pulled Jiang Cheng away. "Oh dear, there are still clothes hanging out to dry at home. I have to hurry back and collect them."
They talked as they walked, and in the blink of an eye they were gone.
Jiang Bai's feigned disappointment vanished, replaced by a cold snort. Looking down, she saw Zhao Ping'an staring at her with utter shock, as if he'd seen a ghost.
"What are you looking at? Look again and I'll gouge your eyes out." Jiang Bai walked towards the kitchen, mimicking the original owner's tone to threaten him, "Can't you see? Come and help."
Zhao Ping'an hesitated for a moment, his gaze following the chicken, and asked indifferently, "What do you want me to do?"
Xiao Le had been secretly observing them. When the two bad guys left, she quickly ran out of the room and stared at the chicken in Jiang Bai's hand with wide eyes.
Oh my god, it really is chicken! We can finally eat meat!
Jiang Bai chuckled, flipped his free hand to reveal two candies: "Little Le, go inside and wait. Once you've finished the candies, you can eat your meal."
Xiao Le blinked, looked up at her brother, and seeing that he didn't react, happily took the candy, then ran to the door and sat down. After a pause, she carefully peeled the candy and licked it.
