Even though Jiang Bai was incredibly wealthy, he was still dazzled by all the sheer number of things.
She said, "Why is all of this piled up here?"
The young master who had been saved by Jiang Bai was already inside drinking tea, with his two servants standing at the door.
The servant was quite old, around forty years old, with a clean and simple face, and spoke in a refined manner: "The old lady in the house heard that you saved my young master's life, so she specially sent us to deliver these gifts as a token of our gratitude."
He deliberately placed it at the entrance so that everyone around could see it clearly, thus telling everyone that his family would repay kindness with kindness.
Jiang Bai said seriously, "It was just a small favor, how could I accept such an offer? Please take it back."
Another servant spoke up: "Master Jiang, please accept it. Otherwise, we won't be able to explain ourselves, won't we?"
Jiang Bai waved his hand, deciding not to get entangled with them anymore, and turned to ask the waiter beside him, "Where is that young master?"
"It's in the reception room," the waiter said, pointing inside before his gaze returned to the jewelry and gold in front of him.
Jiang Bai sighed and strode inside.
Upon entering the reception room, the young master saw her face, snapped his fan shut, and said, "Only now have I truly seen what Jiang Bai's headmaster looks like."
Last time he was injured, the pain made his vision blurry; all he could see was a pale, thin woman.
He vaguely remembered Jin Tong's appearance, and the medicine was so effective that even the family doctor couldn't help but marvel at it.
Jiang Bai recalled Yu Nu's words that he was crazy for fanning himself in the freezing cold, and his gaze involuntarily drifted upwards to the fan in his hand.
She paused for a moment before returning the greeting with clasped hands.
The young man started fanning himself again and said, "I came back this time to properly express my gratitude. Last time I secretly ran away to play, but my enemies found out and sent assassins to hunt me down..."
"No need to thank me, it's what I should do, and I didn't expect anything in return." Jiang Bai interrupted him, waving his hand and saying, "You should have your servants take everything back."
"How can this be allowed?" the young master protested.
Jiang Bai smiled wryly and said, "Now that your two servants have put so much money at the door in front of everyone, if I accept it, wouldn't that tell everyone that I have a lot of money at home, attracting others to rob and steal it?"
"They left the box at the door? And opened it?" The young master was also shocked. He stood up and slammed his fist on the table in front of him in anger. "These useless bastards!"
As he spoke, he hurriedly walked out, saying, "I'm going to take a look."
Jiang Bai hurriedly chased after him.
When they reached the door, the young master was throwing a tantrum at his two servants: "Didn't I tell you to keep a low profile and just carry him in?"
The two servants knelt on the ground and cried out in unison, "This old servant was wrong. This old servant did not understand what the young master meant."
The young master waved his hand: "Never mind, pack up the boxes and bring them in."
"No need," Jiang Bai quickly stopped him. "I didn't want to accept so much money in the first place. I thought that if helping people were linked to money, some people who helped others but didn't get anything in return would feel disappointed and wouldn't help again next time."
"We shouldn't encourage this kind of mentality where people should be paid for helping others, so young master, you should take the box back."
The young master shook his fan, not understanding why Jiang Bai was speaking in long, seemingly logical passages.
He thought for a moment, then turned to the two servants and said, "Master Jiang wants you to move back, so move back."
The two servants were still kneeling on the ground, probably not expecting that someone would not be tempted by so much silver. They looked up at Jiang Bai in surprise, then quickly lowered their heads and agreed.
They closed the lids of the boxes and carried them back to the carriage, one by one.
One busybody shouted, "They're not giving it to us now? They're not sincere at all!"
The young man smiled in the direction of the voice and said, "If you want to repay a debt of gratitude, you can't force others to accept your own ideas, can you?"
He then turned to Jiang Bai and smiled, "Since Miss Jiang Bai doesn't want it, then I'll take it back."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Bai's eyes showed no sign of reluctance; instead, he nodded in satisfaction.
Then the busybody chimed in, "When a woman says she doesn't want something, she really does. Who doesn't love money? Jiang Bai is just pretending to be reserved. If you put the box down and leave, she'll be happier than anyone else, and she'll be laughing in her dreams tonight."
Jiang Bai said seriously, "Who said that? Can someone step forward?"
Everyone scattered, leaving only one man behind.
He was shorter than Jiang Bai, dark-skinned and thin, with a pointed mouth and monkey-like cheeks, his face practically screaming "cheap and cunning."
When he stood in the crowd, his chest was held high, and his voice was loud.
Unexpectedly, after everyone moved aside, he faced Jiang Bai directly, and couldn't help but shrink back slightly, his tone a little hesitant: "What, do you want to hit someone? This is how it is, you're not angry because I hit the nail on the head, are you?"
Jiang Bai scoffed: "First of all, who told you that when a woman says she doesn't want something, it means she does?"
"Anyway, don't apply that to me, or to anyone in my shop. If a woman says she doesn't want something, she doesn't want it. Don't force it on me. If she doesn't like you, we'll buy what we want ourselves."
Upon hearing this, the thin man became enraged: "You women are all like this, so materialistic and snobbish. I was just born into a bad family. If I had been born into a family like his, I don't know how many women would be eager to marry me!"
He pointed directly at the young master next to Jiang Bai, who was watching the commotion while fanning himself, after directing the servants to collect the boxes.
Jiang Bai looked him up and down carefully: "It's not your fault for being born into the wrong family, it's that you yourself are a complete waste."
"You may be small, that's fine, but you must have lofty aspirations and ambitions; it doesn't matter if you're ugly, the features your parents gave you are a gift from heaven as long as they're not incomplete, all we can do is stay clean and healthy; being poor isn't a problem either, as long as you're hardworking and willing to struggle, and earn money steadily, you'll become rich one day."
"But what about you? What have you accomplished?"
“Ambition? No ambition. Judging from your short-sighted appearance, even if you saw this young master lying on the ground, you probably wouldn’t help him. You would just walk around him and say it’s bad luck, right? Maybe you’re even afraid that he’s trying to scam you.”
"You can't even keep it clean. Haven't you washed your clothes in days? I can smell the sour stench on you from this far away. You haven't shaved or washed your face, and there's still yesterday's food stuck to your face!"
Upon hearing Jiang Bai's words, everyone wrinkled their noses and sniffed hard, then awkwardly moved a little further away from the man.
Whether out of anger or shame, the man's face turned bright red with emotion.
Jiang Bai continued, "Someone like you is worlds apart from me and my customers. What gives you the right to presume to know what I mean and point fingers at me?"
