Chapter 82
Once they set foot on the land of Laiyang County, Director Ren ordered them to return home for two days to rest. After a seven- or eight-hour train ride, everyone's faces lit up at the news. Who wouldn't be happy to have two more days off? A trip to the provincial capital was enough to keep them strutting around for a while.
Lu Qin's shirt was wrinkled, but he didn't look tired. He was dragging a suitcase and holding two army green bags in his hands. After saying goodbye to them, he went back to Mr. Huang's place in the factory to ride his bicycle.
Uncle Huang saw him coming from a distance. He put down his newspaper and went to help. "Aren't you guys going to the congress? Why do you look like you're going shopping?"
He hadn't seen him for a few days, and the old man missed him quite a bit. Every afternoon when he heard the jingle of bicycles after work, he would think of the boy, and walk out of the small house with his hands behind his back to watch the workers leaving their shift.
Lu Qin handed him the lightest bag. "The provincial capital is busier than the county town, and has more supplies. I brought some things for my friends and colleagues in the Propaganda Department."
As he spoke, he took out the bread, hawthorns, and canned food that he had prepared long ago from the package and stuffed them all into his hand. "Sir, you are so sweet. I will go home first."
Mr. Huang looked at the rare things on the table, muttering to himself that he had been given so many more. He couldn't hide the smile on his face. He waved his hand and said, "Go, go back and rest."
Lu Qin tied the package tightly to the back seat and rode home.
What greeted him was an empty yard. His old aunt was not at home, not to mention the two people who were at work.
"Aunt Kong Dongdong"
After calling out several times but getting no response, Lu Qin moved his luggage to the lobby and ran to light a fire and take a shower.
Sun Laimei's old face was smiling like a chrysanthemum. She was rushing home with a group of old sisters. From a distance, she could see smoke coming out of the chimney of her house.
She gave up the idea of chatting and said, "My daughter-in-law is back. I'm leaving first."
They knew better than to hold her back. "Okay, we have to go home and make dinner."
Other mothers-in-law in the brigade would rush home when they saw smoke coming out of their homes because they were worried their daughters-in-law would steal the food. But Sun Laimei, on the other hand, rushed home to help. I really don't know what to make of this.
Lu Qin had a towel draped over her wet hair as she saw her aunt carrying a hoe into the yard.
Sun Laimei was surprised and couldn't hide the smile on her face, "I thought it was your sister. When did you come back?"
"I came back as soon as I got off the car. What were you doing, aunt?" Lu Qin took off the towel and put it on his shoulders.
"The bean sprouts in the brigade are growing lushly. The brigade leader has arranged for the women in the brigade to weed. I'm going to weed the bean sprouts. How's it going in the provincial capital?"
The farthest place Sun Laimei had ever been to in her life was Laiyang County. She put down her hoe and asked curiously.
So when Lu Chunnong walked in with a stack of books, she saw her brother and her mother-in-law having a very happy conversation.
Lu Qin was alert. When he heard the noise, he looked over. Lu Chunnong's hair had grown long and then cut short. She looked energetic. The brother and sister were both wearing shirts and black pants today, and they had a particularly good understanding of each other.
It had to be said that Su You's appearance had an impact on him, forcing him to recall the plot, which at least had an emotional impact. So, only when he actually saw his sister appear before him did he feel at ease.
"Sister, it's time to get off work."
"I'm back"
The brother and sister said in unison.
Lu Chunnong took two steps forward and looked him over carefully. It seemed that he had gained weight, and her slightly furrowed brows relaxed.
"Sister" Lu Qin thought there was nothing wrong. In front of his sister, he was really just a younger brother.
"Is everything going well at the conference?" She now remembered how he appeared in many newspapers with great energy, but she still couldn't help but care about him.
"It's okay. We gained a lot from this trip..." Lu Qin briefly recounted what happened at the conference.
After hearing what he said, Sun Laimei couldn't hide the envy in her eyes, "The provincial capital is so lively."
But she was just thinking about it. If she really asked her to go to such a big place, she wouldn't dare to do so. She couldn't even move her legs when walking on the street.
Seeing that it was getting late, Lu Chunnong rolled up his sleeves to prepare dinner and interjected, "The provincial capital is bigger than our county town, with a larger population, so it's naturally bustling."
Lu Qin forgot about the luggage for a moment and went over to help. No matter how delicious the food outside is, it is not as good as the food at home.
He always felt like he had forgotten something.
Until his brother-in-law rode a bicycle into the yard with Kong Dongdong tied to his chest.
Then he remembered, oh, he had forgotten his nephew.
Kong Dongdong studied all day, trying hard to be like his uncle. He was so tired that he fell asleep halfway. When he returned to the familiar place, he raised his fist and rubbed his eyes.
As soon as Kong Yue saw the boy who had just returned from a business trip, he felt relieved.
Lu Qin made a hushing gesture and slowly walked forward.
Kong Yue raised his eyebrows.
Kong Dongdong was facing his father's chest, so Lu Qin grabbed him from behind and lowered his voice to tease him, "Kong Dongdong, guess who I am?"
The moment the words fell, Lu Qin felt his soft little body first harden like a board, then become as lively as a fish, "Uncle!"
"Come on, see what I brought you."
As soon as Lu Qin opened his suitcase, things fell out like he was vomiting, and they were all food.
Kong Dongdong opened his mouth slightly, looked at the colorful things, stretched out his little finger to point at them, then tilted his head to look at him, "Uncle!"
Kong Dongdong had never seen some of these things before, but children have the ability to perceive them.
Lu Qin looked at the little one lovingly, thinking how difficult it must have been for his uncle to raise him. It was still quite sad, though, as children of that generation had very little to eat.
He noticed that there was a little redness at the corners of his eyes and gently wiped it with his fingers.
"Eat it after dinner."
It is the rare love and care that elders have for their juniors that comes to my heart.
But the pile of luggage that Lu Qin brought back really shocked them, and the things he brought back for the Propaganda Department and several female comrades were not included.
Lu Qin handed the fabric and pencil case to his sister in front of Kong Dongdong, and told her that Kong Dongdong's clothes would be made after he finished designing the drawings. Kong Dongdong was so excited to see that his uncle had brought him things that he kept spinning around the adults in the family with joy.
Lu Chunnong had already planned to send Kong Dongdong to study next year, and would send him to the commune at that time.
On the second morning of the two-day holiday, Lu Qin went to see several female comrades with the gifts he had bought for them. He also took Kong Dongdong with him to make up for the uncle-nephew relationship of the past few days. The first place he went to was the supply and marketing cooperative.
Several female comrades bought scarves and hairpins, as they all love dressing up.
"Hello, comrade." Lu Qin walked to the team with fewer people, that is, in front of Zhu Hong.
"What do you want to buy? Do you have a ticket? You're back!" Zhu Hong was surprised and made a loud noise.
Everyone's attention was drawn to her.
Lu Qin pointed at the things in the suitcase and asked, "Should I put them here for you?"
Zhu Hong beckoned Li Xiang to come over and help, "Come with me, take it to the back."
Lu Qin first smiled politely at Li Xiang. For some reason, he felt that Li Xiang's face was flushed at this moment.
As it turned out, his feeling was not wrong.
Because just as he put down his luggage, Zhu Hong couldn't keep it secret and told him in a low voice, "Li Xiang is already dating that gay man."
Before he could ask, Zhu Hong began to tell the story, "At first, Li Xiang thought this gay man was just something she could get along with, but she didn't expect her parents to find out about their meeting a few days later. Li Xiang thought the gay man was okay, so she started dating him openly in front of her parents."
Lu Qin guessed that she heard it from Li Xiang, and probably had a lot of things in her heart that she hadn't told her.
Li Xiang is a smart lesbian, or rather, the kind of lesbian who wakes up quickly. Lu Qin intuitively feels that she will not suffer any loss.
Zhu Hong didn’t want to date before, but now that everyone around her is dating, she feels a little excited.
She glanced at Kong Dongdong who was standing next to him, her eyes showing eagerness to try, "Lu Qin, you have to help me too."
Lu Qin thought of Zhu Hong's impatience, and his eyelids twitched. He urged her, "First, follow Comrade Li's procedures, and then see how Comrade Li treats people. Learn from him first."
It's impossible for him to turn himself into a living person right now.
Zhu Hong was thoughtful.
As soon as he came out, Lu Qin thought about it and decided to walk up to Li Xiang. He was a worrier.
Seeing that there were fewer people around, he walked over and asked, "Comrade Li, how are you doing recently?"
Li Xiang blushed and glanced in Zhu Hong's direction. She probably confessed everything, and she didn't hide it from him. "I think gay men are okay. We can be together everywhere."
Lu Qin observed her expression and finally said, "Then I'll wait to eat your wedding candy, Comrade Li."
Li Xiang agreed sheepishly. It's fair to say she was greatly influenced by Lu Qin, but it was his parents who really made her decide. They were also a workaholic, not a talkative bunch. Of course, not being talkative meant they were completely silent at home, but rather they preferred to be hands-on rather than verbal. They also had a good reputation in their neighborhood.
Speaking of candy, Li Xiang grabbed some new candy and put it on the scale, wrote down the amount, grabbed a handful and stuffed it into Kong Dongdong's pocket, "Dongdong, take it back and eat it."
After getting his uncle's permission, Kong Dongdong immediately thanked him.
"You're welcome." Li Xiang couldn't help but touch the child's hair.
Today is Friday, and he guessed that Qin Shi's family was at work, so he waited until they got off work before going there.
Coincidentally, he met Qin Shi downstairs.
