tricks
After Bai Ji injured Bai Chuan and left Cangmin Mountain, Yun Qian almost exhausted all her energy to repair Bai Chuan's shattered heart meridians inch by inch.
His life was saved, but Bai Ji's move ultimately damaged the root of Bai Chuan's body. This persistent cough, like a maggot clinging to a bone, stubbornly remained, becoming an indelible mark on Bai Chuan's body from the infighting within his sect.
Yun Qian tried every ancient book and secret recipe, and searched for countless spiritual medicines, but she still couldn't completely cure Bai Chuan's cough.
Later, it was Baichuan who gave up first and stopped cooperating with the treatment.
He smiled and said, "It's just a few coughs, nothing serious." As a medical cultivator, he knew his physical condition better than anyone else. Since he knew that Yun Qian's efforts were in vain, he was unwilling to see his senior sister waste her energy on him.
At first, Bai Chuan found that his cough was so bad that he was coughing up blood. He seemed to have found a new and interesting toy. He would deliberately cough up blood in front of Qin Wu, and then casually hand the blood-stained handkerchief to him. He would watch with great interest as his junior brother's usually cold and stern face showed a rare panic and helplessness.
Of course, after using this trick too many times, Qin Wu gradually went from being shocked and bewildered to being expressionless and becoming increasingly unresponsive.
But Qin Wu did care after all.
During that time, he would often silently slip into Baichuan's herbal medicine hut, filled with the aroma of herbs, to peruse obscure and difficult medical books and ancient texts. Then, he would roll up his sleeves and try to concoct cough-relieving pills himself. However, Qin Wu, who possessed exceptional talent in swordsmanship, was like a bewildered child once he stepped into the path of medicine, at a loss and making numerous mistakes. He vividly demonstrated to Baichuan through his actions what it meant to be completely unfamiliar with a different field.
Bai Chuan looked at the ruined medicinal herbs and the smoky alchemy room, feeling utterly helpless. He could only shake his head and smile bitterly, letting him do as he pleased.
Of course, Qin Wu's medical studies did not last long. After he destroyed Bai Chuan's third precious alchemy furnace, the usually good-tempered Bai Chuan finally lost his temper and unceremoniously kicked him out of the medical hut. He then solemnly erected a wooden sign at the door with four large characters written in vermilion ink on it: "Qin Wu is forbidden to enter".
Whether Qin Wu sought help from his senior sister or finally figured it out, the pill was indeed made with considerable skill. Although its effect on his stubborn ailment was merely a drop in the ocean, his technique had certainly improved significantly. Bai Chuan savored the faint taste of the medicine lingering in his mouth, a relieved smile unconsciously curving his lips.
"Coughing up blood and still so happy?"
A clear and familiar female voice suddenly came from behind.
Bai Chuan's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. His fingertips swiftly traced a line in the air, a flicker of spiritual energy, and the blood-stained handkerchief vanished into nothingness. He quickly turned around, his usual gentle smile now a perfect expression of surprise in his voice: "Senior Sister, when did you arrive?"
Yun Qian had taken in his little actions just now and understood. In the past, whenever she asked about his health, he would always make up excuses to avoid the question. Now that she had caught him red-handed, she naturally wouldn't let him get away with it so easily.
"When you were coughing up blood." Yun Qian's tone was calm, but her gaze was as clear as a mirror, piercing straight to the heart.
Bai Chuan's expression stiffened slightly, but he waved his hand nonchalantly and said with a smile, "Senior Sister must have seen wrong. She just coughed a little too hard."
"Is that so?" Yun Qian raised an eyebrow slightly, her gaze sweeping over his face, her tone carrying a hint of inquiry, "You coughed up blood in front of your junior brother without any hesitation, but why do you have to hide it like this when it comes to me?"
He never performed this act of coughing up blood to gain attention in front of Yun Qian, and he also tried his best to avoid showing any signs of illness in front of her.
Because Baichuan could never forget how Yun Qian had almost exhausted her own spiritual power to save him, leaving her barely alive. As a healer, he knew better than anyone how severe his injuries were back then; though not to the point of having his heart meridian completely severed, they were not far off. In the moment before his consciousness sank into darkness, he thought about how he would cope if he truly became a cripple unable to circulate spiritual power.
However, when he awoke and felt that his spiritual energy, though weak, was still functioning smoothly, he felt nothing but relief at surviving the ordeal, and a profound shock and heaviness at Yun Qian's actions. He was well aware of his injuries and understood the price Yun Qian had paid. That was why he dared not show her any vulnerability, lest he needlessly cause her worry.
For the past hundred years, he had been quite good at disguising himself, and Yun Qian had never come down the mountain before, so why did she have to come down today, and just happen to run into him...?
Bai Chuan's mind raced, but he put on his usual expression, the one that worked best in front of his senior sister, and called out softly with a hint of grievance, "Senior sister..."
Trying to get away with being cute.
"That trick won't work today." Yun Qian ignored his feigned pitifulness, her face turned serious, and her tone left no room for doubt. "Stretch out your hand."
Knowing there was no way to avoid it this time, Baichuan had no choice but to obediently extend his wrist, quietly lower his eyes, and wait for Yun Qian to examine him. The usually composed and skillful physician only showed such an expression in front of Yun Qian.
Yun Qian placed her fingertips on his wrist, her spiritual energy gently probing in to sense the flow of energy within his body. After a moment, her anxiety subsided slightly. Although his pulse was still weak, it showed no signs of worsening compared to before.
“Let’s go,” she said, withdrawing her hand and softening her tone. “Qin Wu is still waiting for us.”
"Okay." Bai Chuan responded and obediently followed Yun Qian up the mountain.
A mountain breeze swept by, bringing with it the fresh scent of distant vegetation.
Bai Chuan gazed at his senior sister's elegant profile, a slight pang of sadness rising in his heart.
Since her master passed away and Baiji fell into the demonic path, in the past hundred years, her senior sister seemed to have shed all her carefree and uninhibited nature overnight, becoming calm and steady, and managing Cangmin Mountain in an orderly manner.
