An old man limped over from a distance and came in front of them. His face was deeply wrinkled, full of traces of wind, frost, rain and snow.
He nodded to Wen Zeli with a serious face, then without saying a word he took out the rusty key from his belt and tremblingly opened the big iron gate.
"Let's go." Wen Zeli grabbed Lin Yitong's wrist and pulled her forward.
"Don't pull me." Lin Yitang reflexively tried to break free from that hand, but Wen Zeli grabbed it and pressed the back of her hand with his fingertips.
Lin Yitong keenly noticed that Wen Zeli's aura had become a little low and cold since he entered the door just now. She hesitated for a moment, but finally let Wen Zeli hold her.
Wen Zeli noticed her movements and seemed to smile.
Wen Hangxing was also a little unusual. He was exceptionally silent today and followed them carrying a bag of things.
"It's here." Wen Zeli stopped and said to Lin Yitong while looking at the stone tablet.
Lin Yitang was stunned when he saw the tombstone. It was plainly inscribed, with only eight large characters: "Tomb of Wen Zeyuan and Xie Huan." There was also a photograph, not quite a posthumous one. In the black and white photo, two people cuddled intimately, the tall man holding the petite woman in his arms, both flashing happy smiles at the camera.
"This..." Lin Yitong looked at Wen Zeli with doubt.
Wen Zeli explained: "This is my brother and sister-in-law. I'm here to take you to meet them today."
Lin Yitang opened her mouth slightly. She seemed to have never heard that Wen Zeli had a brother?
Wen Zeli rubbed her head and explained briefly: "When he was in college, my father kicked him out of the house for some reasons, so you probably haven't heard of him."
Lin Yitang nodded in understanding, then stared at Wen Zeli like a frightened animal. "No, you told me the secrets of a wealthy family so easily? Shouldn't someone as thoughtful as you be wary of me?"
Lin Yitang's expression was too complicated for Wen Zeli to guess, so he asked, "What are you thinking about?"
"Ah, I was thinking, it turns out you're not here to pay tribute to your ex-wife." Lin Yitang came to his senses.
Wen Zeli: "..." He said helplessly, "What are you thinking? How could I... Never mind, I'll tell you about this tonight when I get home."
Lin Yitang looked at him guiltily, lowered her head and said, "Oh." After thinking for a moment, she continued, "Actually, you don't have to tell me." The more she knew, the deeper her connection with the Wen family would be, and the harder it would be for her to extricate herself when the time came.
How could Wen Zeli, an old fox who had been rampant in the business world for many years, not understand her implication? Although he didn't know why Lin Yitang insisted on leaving the Wen family, how could he allow it? Thinking of this, Wen Zeli's eyes flashed.
Lin Yitang knew she had spoken out of turn, and now she was internally groaning, lamenting, "Why did you say what you were thinking?" Wouldn't Wen Zeli notice something was wrong? She raised her eyes and secretly glanced at Wen Zeli, seeing that his handsome, deep face, as sharp as a knife, remained expressionless, as if he hadn't noticed anything unusual. Lin Yitang breathed a sigh of relief. It was good that he hadn't noticed.
Wen Zeli pretended not to notice her little action and said to Wen Hangxing: "Come and pay your respects to them."
Wen Hangxing walked forward, took out incense and paper money, and carefully cleaned the dust in front of the tomb. He lit incense, burned paper, and knelt down, as if he had done it countless times.
Lin Yitang was pulled by Wen Zeli to stand beside him. She asked, "Aren't we going to burn some paper or something?"
Wen Zeli looked at Wen Hangxing's back with a leisurely gaze, as if he was seeing that familiar person through him. "No need. The dead are gone. Those who remember him are either those who miss him or those who feel guilty. It's enough for me to have a clear conscience while he's still alive."
Lin Yitang had never heard such a statement before. Although it seemed a bit unorthodox, she actually felt some truth in it after thinking about it carefully. She said, "We understand that the past cannot be changed, so the most important thing is to do well in the present. That way, when the day comes that we can't see each other again, we won't have any regrets, right?"
Wen Zeli's heart moved slightly when he heard this. A gleam flashed in his usually calm eyes. He was still holding Lin Yitang's hand. He moved to stand behind her, as if embedding Lin Yitang in his arms. With full possessiveness, he murmured: "My dear, you always surprise me. I seem to like you more and more."
Lin Yitang shuddered all over and changed the subject: "Then why did Wen Hangxing go?" In fact, she wanted to ask which category this thin child belonged to, guilt or nostalgia?
Wen Zeli was surprised at her reaction. He looked at Wen Hangxing, who was worshipping earnestly beside him. He put a finger to his lips and said softly, "Hush, this is also related to what I want to tell you tonight."
After Wen Hangxing finished the worship process, he stood in front of the tombstone and pressed his chest. Every year when he came to this place, he would feel a sense of sadness and grief in his chest, from the initial shock to the habit now.
Wen Hangxing looked at the two smiling people in the photo. Just like every ordinary yet special day in the past few years, he would always chat with them about some family matters in his heart: Uncle, aunt, I've been doing okay recently. Although I still get sick occasionally, I've learned how to control myself. My dad has married a new wife. She treats me very well and I like her very much... At this point, Wen Hangxing's face was slightly embarrassed, and he continued: My dad likes her too, we all see it. But sometimes I worry that I have become an obstacle for them to be together, because if I weren't there, Ms. Lin might be more determined in her heart. A Sui successfully avenged his mother, and I... Wen Hangxing said self-deprecatingly, I haven't even seen my own mother, was my birth a mistake?
