After searching through the original owner's memories, I actually found information about a similar figure in the distant memories; his name was Wan Silong, and he belonged to the Wan family's side branch. During the Wan family's heyday, he held shares and dividends in the Wan family, and also had a lot of industries on his hands.
The original owner had seen him several times when he was a child. Later, the Wan family consolidated their assets and donated their property, and they became distant from this old man. Later, the original owner had no news about Wan Silong, and did not expect that he was still alive.
"It's you, Grandpa Wan Si. I haven't seen you for many years. I almost forgot you." Yuxiu's words were full of nonchalance, but she was speaking the truth; if someone who hadn't been around for many years suddenly came back to embarrass her, don't blame her for being disrespectful to the elderly.
The old man looked up and down at the man and woman in front of him. The man had an upright posture, was wearing a windbreaker, and was tall and handsome. The woman was also wearing a windbreaker. Her appearance could only be considered pretty, but her temperament was completely different. She was completely different from the timid little girl in his memory.
"You...have grown up."
Zhong Yuxiu nodded slightly. "More than a decade has passed. You've grown up, but you've aged."
Wan Silong choked a bit but didn't care. He said to her kindly, "Yes, I'm old. You've been back to the city for four or five years, right?"
"almost."
"Why don't you come to see your father now that you're back?"
Zhong Yuxiu smiled helplessly, "It's better for you not to ask about the affairs between me and the Wan family. If you don't know their suffering, don't advise them to be kind. I think you understand this principle."
Facing the girl who had grown up to have her own opinions, and looking at the person standing next to her, Wan Silong knew that he couldn't persuade her today.
"Okay, since you said so, I won't say much. Just register and go in to burn some incense. At least I've raised you. No matter what grudges you have between you, when a person dies, it's like a light goes out, and everything should disappear." Don't keep thinking about it. It will do no good to either you or others.
Zhong Yuxiu nodded slightly, and Fang Guozhong stepped forward to pay the gift money and register the incense, candles, paper money and other things that were sent; after saying goodbye to Wan Silong, the group entered the main hall.
Wan Xuetang's coffin was parked in the lobby. Wan Yuning, dressed in white mourning clothes, with a black cotton cloth wrapped around his arm and a mourning hat on his head, was kneeling on the left side of the entrance; he held a mourning stick wrapped with grass and white paper in his hand, and bowed to each person who came.
When he bent down, the people who came in would take a step back and gently salute Wan Yuning in return.
Zhong Yuxiu and Yan Rushan were in the same boat. When Wan Yuning looked up, Zhong Yuxiu saw that his eyes were red. He stared at her and smiled blankly. Zhong Yuxiu said, "My condolences."
"Thank you, Yuxiu. Please come sit inside after lighting the incense."
Yuxiu nodded slightly and pulled Yan Rushan to the coffin. A young man presented three incense sticks; Yan Rushan gave three, Zhong Yuxiu gave three, and Gu Lingguo and Fang Guozhong behind them also gave three each.
After burning incense together, Zhong Yuxiu stood beside the coffin and said to the person who handed the incense.
"Brother Fangzi, I will be the one who carries the incense. You go outside and help your grandfather." The person who carries the incense is Wan Yufang, nicknamed Fangzi. He is the grandson of Wan Silong and of the same generation as Wan Yuning.
Wan Yufang looked at her seriously and asked, "Are you Yuxiu?"
"Yes, I'm Zhong Yuxiu." Her frankness and politeness impressed Wan Yufang. "Okay, you pass the incense, and I'll go outside to help entertain the guests."
Zhong Yuxiu nodded and thanked him, "Thank you."
"Okay, okay. Let's talk after Third Uncle is buried." Wan Yufang didn't know Wan Yuxiu's current situation. She only knew that she was not Wan Xuetang's biological daughter, but an adopted daughter. She hadn't seen her in the Wan family since she went to the countryside. In order to protect her information, Wan Xuetang and others never said anything else.
Therefore, the other members of the Wan family had no idea what Zhong Yuxiu did for a living. They only found out today that she was married. The man beside her was the best of the best. It was purely admiration for him. He was really good-looking. Standing next to Zhong Yuxiu, although there was a difference in appearance, their temperament was very compatible.
"We'll talk about it after the burial."
Without giving a definite answer, Wan Yufang did not force it. She smiled and walked past Wan Yuning and went outside.
Instead, Wan Yuning looked up at her, his eyes full of emotion. After all, she still has feelings for her father, right?
"Thank you." He opened his mouth to say thank you silently.
When Zhong Yuxiu saw this, she just nodded slightly and turned her head away; she went to get incense and handed the lit incense to the people who came to worship behind her. Yan Rushan helped her, acting completely as a son-in-law.
Many people arrived one after another. Some recognized Zhong Yuxiu and Yan Rushan and wanted to approach them to make some connections; however, the situation didn't allow them to do so, so they could only regretfully give up. Many people regretted not helping Wan Xuetang when he was seriously ill. If they had known that the Wan family had such a big-name relative who was highly respected by the higher-ups, they would have gone up to them to make some connections.
Dozens of people came that day, and even more the next day; for five consecutive days, more and more people came, even people who had nothing to do with the Wan family came, with a clear target: Yan Rushan and Zhong Yuxiu.
Gu Lingguo and Fang Guozhong both felt that these days were the most tiring days following Zhong Yuxiu. On the last day, Wan Xuetang was buried, and after all the guests had left, the Wan family's house was in a mess. Wan Silong, Wan Yufang, and several former branches of the Wan family and current relatives stayed behind to clean up the mess.
Zhong Yuxiu had no intention of staying to help, mainly because she was tired. She hadn't been home for a few days, so at most she'd asked Gu Lingguo to go back and get some clothes for them to change into. They didn't stay at the Wan family's house, but stayed in a hotel. After finishing her work, she naturally wanted to go home first to have a good meal and a good night's sleep.
Unfortunately, Wan Yuning did not give her this opportunity.
"Yuxiu, you and your brother-in-law should stay a little longer. Let the tribe members be witnesses for us."
Zhong Yuxiu didn't understand what was going on, but she stayed anyway and said, "Okay."
Wan Yuning said, "Fourth Grandfather, Yufang, and the other uncles, please come in. Father left a last will and testimonies. Everyone is here, so please listen and bear witness. I also have something to announce."
"Okay, let's listen first; it's just that the yard is so messy..."
"Don't worry about it. We'll hire a part-time cleaner tomorrow." Wan Yuning said, and led everyone into the main hall. "Everyone, please take a seat. I'll be right back."
The group sat down one after another and looked at each other in silence.
Wan Yuning returned with a wooden box, placed the things on the upper table, and took out some of the things that had already been divided; he looked at Wan Silong and several other uncles.
"This is the inheritance my father left me. It states: The inheritance is divided equally between Yuxiu and me. Wan Yutong is not eligible for a share of the inheritance."
"I'll inherit the property deeds. There's over $200,000 in a Swiss bank, of which I'll get $100,000. Of the remaining $100,000, 50,000 will go to Yuxiu, and the rest to her three children. Yuxiu and I will split the gold and silver jewelry equally, as will the antiques and paintings in the house. That's pretty much it."
