"Dad is right. It's time to study hard." Yan's mother nodded in agreement.
The strict father frowned, feeling resentful. "Foreign languages are difficult to learn. The word combinations are even harder than Russian. Dad, why are you even thinking of learning this?"
"Keep pace with the times, understand?" Yan Guofeng's eyes fell on his son. "The country is keeping pace with the times, and so must we. If we don't make progress, we will only fall behind and be beaten."
The strict father nodded, "I understand."
“You can’t just know it, you have to take action.”
The strict father repeatedly promised to study hard, and the strict mother had no objection. Could anything be harder to learn than the Chinese characters of our motherland? Chinese characters are truly complex. If I can learn Chinese characters, how difficult is English? If I can't make the transition right away, will I still be able to make the transition over time?
After washing up, Yan Rushan and Zhong Yuxiu entered the main hall and saw Yan Guofeng explaining the composition of the English alphabet to his parents. They exchanged glances, each expressing surprise. Few of the older generation seriously studied foreign languages. Even many of their generation struggled with foreign languages, finding them quite challenging.
They found a place to sit down and didn't disturb anyone; it was not until Wang Daya came in with the food that their enthusiasm for learning a foreign language was interrupted.
"Mr. Yan, breakfast is ready, you can eat now."
"Okay." Yan Guofeng put down the book and stood up. "Where are the children?"
"He wasn't awake before, but he should be awake now. I'll go and check on him." Wang Daya put down the things in her hand and left.
Zhong Yuxiu said, "Grandpa, Mom and Dad, I'll go take a look too."
"Together." said the strict father.
Mother Yan nodded repeatedly, "Yes, let's go together. We didn't have time to take a closer look at them when we got back yesterday; we also didn't get to spend some time with them. I wonder if they still remember us."
"You only come back once a year, it's strange that I can remember you."
"Dad." The strict father called out helplessly.
Yan's mother blushed. "I said the wrong thing. We haven't seen each other much all year round. How could they remember us when they were so young? It doesn't matter. We have a two-week vacation. We can spend more time with the children in the next two weeks."
"That's right. The children are still young, so don't say anything inappropriate. Li Ji, Li Ming, and Li Zhen may be young, but they already have some memories. Asking them if they remember you would be embarrassing! Even if they are young, they still need to save face."
Well, before they could say anything, the old man came to protect them.
Yan's mother smiled bitterly, "I know, Dad. We won't say anything nonsense. We can't compare with you in raising children. We will listen to you."
"Let's go."
The family went to the backyard and walked into the children's room. The three little ones had already woken up, and Gong Zhaodi had dressed them. Even with three identical sets of red clothes on them, it was still possible to recognize who was who at a glance. It was so magical.
The three of them are siblings, born a few minutes apart from each other, and they become more and more different as they grow up; even their personalities are different, but they all inherit the best qualities of their parents.
"Oh my, my darling grandchildren." Upon seeing the three chubby, white grandchildren, Mother Yan instantly forgot her previous promise; she strode forward and wanted to hug them, but the three neatly dressed little ones sitting by the bed all turned sideways and crawled backwards, as if they were running for their lives.
He paused in his steps, then turned around and looked at Yan's father and the others blankly, "Are they scared?"
The strict father stared at his grandson without saying a word. Zhong Yuxiu pursed her lips and smiled. Yan Rushan said expressionlessly, "They just want to stay away from you and not be familiar with you."
"Is that so?" Realizing she had frightened her grandson, Yan's mother smiled helplessly and said, "It's okay. Go and coax them. Let's get to know each other. Once we're familiar with each other, they won't hide from us anymore."
"They are not like this usually." Yan Rushan said the heartbreaking words again.
The strict mother glanced at her eldest son and said, "You just have a big mouth."
"That's the truth, and you won't let anyone tell you." Yan Rushan snorted, walked to the bedside and held out his hand to his three sons, "Boys, come out."
When the three boys saw someone they knew, they gave Yan Rushan face this time and crawled out from the side of the bed. They supported themselves with their hands and stood up, pointing at their father and mother and talking a lot, but no one present could understand what they said.
It's rare that the strict father and mother don't understand. As for the three good grandsons, they look like chubby white dumplings, wearing red clothes embroidered with auspicious clouds and household names. They are just New Year picture dolls.
"So cute, so well-behaved." Yan's mother's whole attention was on her three grandchildren. If she wasn't afraid of scaring her great-grandchildren, she would have gone up to hug them and kissed them a few times.
Although the strict father did not lose his composure so obviously, the corners of his usually cold mouth curled up slightly, showing that he also liked his three grandsons.
Zhong Yuxiu stepped forward and picked up one of them, Yan Rushan picked up another, and Goudan walked over and picked up the remaining ball; the three little kids were held in people's arms, and they did not forget to communicate, as if they were curious about the two strangers, Yan's father and Yan's mother.
"Li Ji, Li Ming, Li Zhen, this is grandpa, this is grandma."
"Yeah yeah?" Li Ji tilted his head and put his little hands into his mouth.
Liming and Lizhen also tilted their heads curiously. They had no memory of these two people. "Nai?"
"Yes, these are grandpa and grandma, you should call them grandpa and grandma."
"Coconut, milk!" Li Ji took the lead in calling people, but his words were unclear.
"It's grandpa and grandma." Yan Rushan corrected.
Li Ming called out in a baby voice, "Grandpa."
"Ah." The strict father responded with an unusually loud voice. He was usually reserved, but now he grinned broadly. "My dear grandson, Dashan, is this the second or third child?"
"Second son." Yan Rushan replied, lowering his head and asking his second son, "Little boy, would you like to hold grandpa for a hug?"
Li Ming quickly grabbed his father's collar and said, "No, no, no."
"Li Ming doesn't want to, so Li Ji, can you let grandpa hug you? Grandpa is a great hero, and grandpa likes our Li Ji very much." Zhong Yuxiu coaxed her eldest son.
Li Ming and Li Zhen looked at their grandfather, then at their grandmother; while Li Ming was still hesitating, Li Zhen had already extended his hand.
"Grandpa, hold me."
The strict father's expression brightened. He quickly picked up his grandson and rocked him in his arms. "Good boy, he's quite heavy."
"They eat a lot at every meal and have good appetites, so it would be strange if they don't grow well." Yan Rushan said this with a look of disgust on his face, but his tone was quite proud.
Yan Guofeng stood nearby, watching with delight. A happy family reunion, harmonious and peaceful, was more important than anything else. At his age, with great-grandchildren already in his arms, he had no regrets. He wished he could live a few more years, hoping to see them marry and have children. Even if he couldn't make it that far, he would be content.
