Chapter 7 A Small Saving

After more than half an hour's journey, the tractor arrived at the outskirts of the county town. Jiang Yuxiu breathed a sigh of relief. The tractor rumbled forward on the bumpy road. She held on to the handrail tightly and dared not let go, for fear of being shaken and thrown up.

"Brother Yan, aren't you going into the county town?"

"It's troublesome to drive the tractor in and turn back. I'll send the pheasants and rabbits in first, and leave the wild boar here temporarily. You stay here and don't walk around. Wait for me to come back." Yan Rushan quickly lifted the hay, took the pheasants and rabbits in his hands, and reminded him again and again.

Zhong Yuxiu nodded in understanding and watched the man go away, with her elbows on her knees and her hands supporting her chin. After waiting for an unknown amount of time, she saw Yan Rushan leading two tall men over. One of them was pushing a wheelbarrow with a large scale on it, about 1.5 meters long.

"Brother Yan."

"Come down and let two comrades weigh and load the truck."

With a wave of her hand, Zhong Yuxiu jumped off the tractor and asked, "Brother Yan, who are they?"

"Let's talk about it when we get back."

Yan Rushan sent his men off, telling the two men to take the wild boar off the cart and tie it up with ropes. The leader weighed it on a large scale and said, "Xiao Yan, the wild boar weighs 350 kilograms. The current price of meat is 80 cents for first-grade meat and 45 cents for fourth-grade meat. Wild boars have a lot of lean meat, so I'll give you 50 cents a kilogram. Is that okay with you?"

"The price Comrade Zhou gave is reasonable, but I want some food, both coarse and fine, and I'll convert it into money." Yan Rushan said calmly.

Comrade Zhou was in a good mood, smiling, "Okay! Comrade Yan and I will go back to settle the matter. As for this young comrade..." He glanced at Zhong Yuxiu twice and was undecided for a moment.

"She's watching the tractor here. Let's go and be back quickly."

Zhong Yuxiu listened to them talking without saying a word; no matter how she listened, she felt that Yan Rushan was protecting her and didn't want her to get involved in the transaction.

The two of them agreed, and Yan Rushan walked up to Zhong Yuxiu and said, "I'll get my things and be back soon. Don't wander around."

"Okay." She was not familiar with the county town, and she was even more afraid to walk around because of the brigade's treasure - the tractor.

After the explanation, Yan Rushan followed the two men away, leaving Zhong Yuxiu alone again. Seeing that the area was sparsely populated, she decided not to board the tractor and sat down on the grass behind it. She channeled her spiritual power into her space ring, though the contents were of no use for the time being. However, the high-tech data could be used; it was the data she had collected during her last near-interstellar journey to become a high-level researcher.

From civilian machinery to hot weapons.

Now, she can't move, and dares not move; a girl who grew up spoiled in the city, without any talent, suddenly produces something beyond her own value, she will be placed under house arrest if she doesn't die.

Waiting for the college entrance examination to arrive.

When Yan Rushan came back, he didn't see anyone. He circled the tractor and finally found him. He was so lost in thought that he didn't even notice him coming back. "Comrade Zhong."

Zhong Yuxiu suddenly came back to her senses, "Ah? Brother Yan, you're back." She looked a little embarrassed.

"Yes." Yan Rushan put the large cloth bag in his hand on the tractor. "Ten pounds of fine grain, and the banknotes are inside. Count them."

"No need to order. Brother Yan has helped me so much, how can I not trust him?" Zhong Yuxiu looked him up and down. "Brother Yan, have you encountered any problems?"

Yan Rushan nodded lightly, climbed onto the driver's seat of the tractor, gave her a look, indicating that she should get up and go.

Zhong Yuxiu quickly climbed up and said, "Brother Yan, tell me what happened."

"The city is conducting strict inspections. Don't go into the county town for the next month. The educated youth camp still has enough food to eat."

"Strict investigation? Is it a private transaction? Or the black market?" Recalling the few words Yan Rushan had said in the past, the black market was not allowed to exist, but the county town did not have enough food and supplies; the black market had to exist, which led to the relevant personnel conducting surprise inspections from time to time.

The same applies to private transactions. Once discovered and reported, both parties will be detained and labeled as people who are despised and scorned by this era.

"They're all under investigation."

Seeing Yan Rushan's calm eyes, it was obvious that this was not the first time he had encountered such a thing. Yuxiu nodded and said, "Then I won't come for the time being. I have enough food to last for half a year, and the grain is barely enough. I can mix in some wild vegetables."

"Let's try again after the storm has passed." He couldn't give up this line. No one knew what would happen next. As long as he had money and food in his hands, he wouldn't be worried.

"Thank you, Brother Yan. I've made you take a big risk." It seems that Yan Rushan was indeed protecting her.

Yan Rushan started the tractor, turned around and walked back, looking down at her; he stuffed a small paper bag from his pocket into her hand, and Zhong Yuxiu felt puzzled.

"What?"

"Fever-reducing medicine. Don't reveal your identity when you get back."

"I understand." Zhong Yuxiu took it and put it in her trouser pocket, actually putting it in the storage ring; if she couldn't use it now, who knows if she would need it in the future, it was medicine after all.

This era was too poor and backward, and medicines were rare.

They chatted about this and that along the way, and finally arrived at the educated youth site. Zhong Yuxiu hurriedly jumped off the tractor with the food in her hands. Her butt was numb from the back and forth shaking, and even when her feet were on solid ground, she could still feel the throbbing.

"You go back and rest first, I'll go return the tractor." After saying that, he drove away in the tractor.

After watching the people go away, Zhong Yuxiu turned around and went back to the educated youth site. At that time, the educated youth next to her were still working, and the educated youth site was deserted. She went straight back to her room, closed the door, opened the bag, took out the money and put it aside, and put half of the food into the storage ring.

The grain was placed aside, and the banknotes were counted. A wild boar sold for at least 175 yuan; with the pheasants and rabbits, it was just over 200 yuan, not counting the grain and banknotes. As for the banknotes, there were four types: grain, meat, soap, and shampoo. There were 30 kilograms of grain, 5 kilograms of meat, two soap tickets, and two shampoo tickets.

After counting all the details, she now has 250 yuan in savings; she finally feels more at ease, and has money and food to worry about.

She put the money in the storage ring, took the fine grain out and went straight to the kitchen. There was a small cellar in the kitchen, which contained the rations for everyone in the educated youth center. Zhong Yuxiu put the grain in her hand into the cellar.

"What are you doing instead of staying in your room?"

Zhong Yuxiu was startled. She turned around and saw Yan Rushan standing at the door. She felt relieved. "You scared me! I put the grain in the cellar. You all take good care of me, so it's natural that we should share the fine grain. How come you're back so soon? Did the captain say anything?"

"I asked about your condition, and I told you you just caught a cold and have a high fever. I've already given you antipyretics and an injection. You should be fine after two doses." Yan Rushan glanced at the cellar. "Save the fine grain for yourself. How many times can you eat this little?"

It’s better to keep it for your own use.

"If we finish this little bit, it will be gone." His expression was as he thought, "How about we make dumplings? There are a lot of wild vegetables in this season, so we can make wild vegetable dumplings."

Yan Rushan's eyes were cold, and it seemed that the other person didn't understand the meaning of his words at all.
