Gu Huaijin was a little worried when he heard what Jiang's mother said, so he said to her, "Okay, I'll ask her later."
Song Zhi woke up in the middle of the night. Gu Huaijin turned on the light when he heard the sound. Song Zhi didn't expect that he had slept for such a long time.
"Why didn't you wake me up at night?"
"You seem to be sleeping soundly."
Song Zhi felt that he was not very smart, so he suppressed his temper and muttered: "I'm hungry."
This statement is neither sensible nor convincing.
"I'll go downstairs and cook you a bowl of noodles." Gu Huaijin sat up, put on a cardigan over his pajamas, and stood up to go out.
"I'll go down with you." Song Zhi slept very comfortably and didn't feel sleepy at all.
Gu Huaijin glanced at her and nodded, and the two of them went downstairs together. Since Gu's father and mother were resting on the first floor, they moved very quietly. The elderly were light sleepers to begin with, and if they made any loud noises, they would easily wake them up.
"Add more chili." Song Zhi watched Gu Huaijin cooking noodles and whispered in his ear.
Gu Huaijin frowned and objected, "Don't eat anything too spicy late at night. It irritates your stomach."
"Put less, put less, please. I can't eat it without any taste."
Gu Huaijin couldn't stand her acting coquettishly, so he picked up the chili sauce and added a little bit, just a little bit.
"You're so stingy." Song Zhi said with some dissatisfaction when he saw that he put in only a little bit and the flavor was almost unbearable.
"Are you feeling unwell after coming back today?" Gu Huaijin didn't indulge her at all. He told her to relax a little. Suddenly, he remembered what Jiang's mother said and asked with some concern.
"No, I just feel very sleepy and can hardly open my eyes." Song Zhi said indifferently.
"What about now?" Gu Huaijin looked at her.
"I'm fine now. I don't feel uncomfortable anywhere. Just when I woke up, my stomach felt a little uncomfortable. I was a little hungry and nauseous. It might be because I was carsick on the train. Now I feel very comfortable when I smell the aroma of food."
Gu Huaijin put the noodles into a bowl, placed it on the dining table, and asked Song Zhi to sit down and eat. He then went to the kitchen to pour Song Zhi a cup of warm water.
Song Zhi picked up his chopsticks and was about to eat when he saw Gu Huaijin sitting opposite him. There was only one bowl of rice between the two of them. This... made Song Zhi feel embarrassed to eat alone.
She asked tentatively: "Would you like to eat some too?"
Gu Huaijin looked at her and said calmly: "I'm not hungry, you should eat quickly."
"Why don't you go upstairs and rest first? I'll go upstairs after I finish my meal." Song Zhi said in a negotiating manner. She was not used to eating alone and having people around her looking at her.
"Eat slowly, there's no rush." After saying this, Gu Huaijin didn't move at all and still sat motionless on the chair. Song Zhi didn't know what to say, so he slowly started eating the noodles.
Gu Huaijin filled a bowl, as if she was afraid that Song Zhi wouldn't have enough to eat. Song Zhi ate a little, not even half, and then she couldn't eat any more. She looked at Gu Huaijin ingratiatingly, the meaning was self-evident.
Gu Huaijin finally gave in and ate up all the noodles in her bowl.
When Gu Huaijin went to wash the dishes, Song Zhi lowered his head to look at his belly, but it was not visible at all in his pajamas. It was strange that his belly did not feel bigger even after eating so much.
Gu Huaijin noticed her gaze and followed it. His face flushed, but he said seriously, "The dishes are done. Let's go upstairs and sleep."
Song Zhi didn't notice anything unusual about him, but he saw that his face was very red, which was a bit strange because it wasn't very hot today.
"Is it very hot?" Song Zhi asked in confusion. He moved closer to him and touched his ear, which was not very hot either.
"It's not hot." Gu Huaijin looked unnatural, with a faint blush on his face, and his hands and feet were trembling.
"Oh." Song Zhi didn't care and prepared to go upstairs to sleep. It wasn't good for the two of them to be sneaking around in the living room so late at night.
The next day was New Year's Eve, and everyone in the family was busy. Gu Huaijin was pasting couplets outside, and Song Zhi was watching him to prevent him from pasting them crookedly.
"A little bit down, yes, a little bit to the left, let me take another look... it's ready to be pasted." Song Zhi was busy giving instructions. Gu Huaijin knew that the more she gave instructions, the busier it would be, but he still obeyed.
After putting up the couplets, Song Zhi planned to go to the kitchen to help Gu's mother make dumplings. Several people sat together at the square table in the kitchen.
"Zhizhi, you don't need to help. I asked my aunt to buy some fish, duck and food this morning. When you are done, clean up and go see your mother." Seeing that it was almost ten o'clock, Mother Gu hurriedly stopped Song Zhi from sitting down.
"Here, thank you, Mom. We'll go first." Song Zhi was already thinking about this matter. When her mother Gu said this, she looked at the time and saw that it was getting late, so she went upstairs to change her clothes and went to Song's mother's place with Gu Huaijin.
"I was thinking of going to see you two later. Why are you running back and forth as soon as you get back?" Song's mother was naturally very happy to see her daughter, but she still pretended to complain, fearing that Gu's mother would be dissatisfied with her coming to her place right after she got back.
"It was my mother-in-law who asked me to come back today. The car is filled with things she prepared." Her mother Song Zhi naturally knew what she was thinking. She did not pay attention to her mother's words but comforted her instead.
"Your mother-in-law is so thoughtful. It's cold, come in quickly!" She said and invited the two people into the house.
Seeing Gu Huaijin carrying so many things, she felt extremely satisfied, as this showed that her in-laws liked her daughter.
"Let me give you some advice."
"No need, Mom, I can take it." Gu Huaijin dodged and refused, walking quickly into the house.
"This kid seems a lot closer this time around. How are you two getting along?"
"That's it." Song Zhi was embarrassed to talk about this with his mother.
"How can you talk like that? What do you mean by just like that? Is your relationship much better now than before?" Song's mother could see with her own eyes that her son-in-law's attitude was different from when he just left.
Song Zhi nodded shyly without saying anything.
Seeing her reaction, Song's mother knew what she was thinking. She was so happy that she couldn't close her mouth. She just wanted her daughter to live a good life. A happy marriage and a harmonious family were more important than anything else. She was relieved.
"Okay, okay, I bought some vegetables early and will make you some more delicious food later." After knowing this, Song's mother did not continue to ask further questions, but changed the subject.
"Make some pickled fish. Your son-in-law loves it."
"Only my son-in-law likes to eat it, don't you want to eat it?" Song's mother asked with a smile. The child has really changed a lot after returning this time.
