Chapter 9: Taking the Train

"What delicious food is there on the train?" Song Zhi was curious. Forgive her for never having taken a train before.

This question stumped Gu Huaijin. He has always been picky about food and usually doesn't eat food on the train. He would only force himself to eat something if he was on a business trip and the train ride was long.

"Why don't you just eat chestnuts!"

Song Zhi's face was full of an expression of "Are you kidding me?", but in the end he had no choice but to ask Gu Huaijin to take out the instant noodles and beef sauce buns from the bag and make do with them.

Since Song Zhi had eaten chestnuts all morning, he couldn't finish the instant noodles after just two bites, and the remaining instant noodles were eaten by Gu Huaijin.

After two days of bumpy ride, we finally arrived at the Northwest Corps on the morning of the third day.

As soon as he got off the train, Gu Huaijin looked around and found the jeep that had picked them up. Next to the jeep was a young soldier in military uniform, holding a cardboard with Gu Huaijin's name on it.

"Hello, I'm Gu Huaijin, who has been transferred to the Northwest 36th Regiment." Gu Huaijin brought Song Zhi to the young soldier, saluted, and introduced him, "This is my wife, Song Zhi."

Song Zhi smiled politely and greeted him.

"Hello, Political Commissar, hello, sister-in-law. I'm Xiao Zhao, the guard who's here to pick you up. I'm Zhao Shitou." Zhao Shitou looked at the Political Commissar and his wife in front of him and exclaimed in his heart, "They're so good-looking!" People from Kyoto are different. They're pleasant to listen to and polite.

He is already a political commissar at such a young age. I heard from the grapevine that this leader is only powerful in his family and his own abilities are average. Otherwise, why would he not be the head of a regiment in Kyoto but run to this remote place like theirs? He must not be able to survive in Kyoto.

But no matter what he thought, he still took the things from the political commissar and his wife's hands and put them in the car.

After packing up, they got in the car and drove to the military compound.

The road was very bumpy. From the time they got on the car to the military area, it was all dirt road. The road surface was not very flat and was full of potholes. There was a small pothole every few meters.

They were also uncomfortable sitting in the car. The car was shaking, and they were swaying from side to side inside. Song Zhi looked painful, and she resisted the urge to vomit. Gu Huaijin saw her discomfort, took her in his arms, and whispered: "Sleep, you will arrive soon after a good sleep."

Song Zhi didn't bother to be polite with him. He closed his eyes and dozed off peacefully. Having a flesh pad was always good.

Zhao Shitou glanced through the rearview mirror and hurriedly looked away, but he was very careful on the rest of the way and tried to drive as steadily as possible.

Finally arriving at the gate of the military area, Zhao Shitou handed over his soldier ID, and Gu Huaijin also took out his transfer order. After the guard verified that everything was correct, he opened the door and let them pass.

"Political Commissar, this is a house temporarily approved by the Ministry of Housing. Time is very urgent. The division commander said that we should settle here for the time being. We can move in after the tube building is renovated in a few days." Zhao Shitou looked nervous, fearing that his leader would be dissatisfied.

Now the soldiers in the military region and their wives like to live in the newly built tube-shaped buildings, so many of the large bungalows with courtyards built earlier here have become empty.

Because the notice was too urgent, the troops were not prepared. The rooms in the family compound were limited, and there were no rooms suitable for cadres at the regimental level and above, so they could only be arranged to live in a small courtyard. However, this small courtyard was arranged according to the level of regimental cadres and had two floors. To be honest, it was already very good.

"That's great. Take me to see the commander first. Can you do it alone?" He said to Song Zhi.

Song Zhi was not someone who was confused. She knew that business was the most important thing now, so she nodded and motioned him to get busy.

After they moved their luggage and other things into the house and drove away, Song Zhixian slowly walked around the yard, taking in the layout of the house.

There was an open space in the southwest corner which was a toilet, but she went in to take a look and came out immediately. There was not even a squat toilet. It was just a simple rectangular pit dug with two wooden boards placed on top. It was unclear whether it was strong or not.

Apart from this place, there is only a large open space in the yard.

The house is actually quite big, more than enough for two people to live in. There is a large room on the left side of the living room on the first floor, and two large rooms on the right side, but the large room next to the living room is divided into two small rooms.

The large room on the far right has a door facing outside, and the other rooms are connected to the living room. The one with a door facing outside should be the kitchen. When I went in, I guessed right. As soon as I entered the door, I saw a stove made of mud, which was used for cooking. There were two stoves that could hold two pots.

She had seen this thing at her grandmother's house when she was young, so it was not unfamiliar to her.

Then I returned to the living room, where there was a staircase leading to the second floor. I took a casual look around the second floor and found it was no different from the first floor. There was no surprise at all.

She expected the environment here to be harsh, but she didn't expect that there was not even water brought into the house. No wonder everyone lived in buildings, where using water was indeed more convenient.

The room was also empty, without any decent furniture. Apart from the necessary tables, chairs, benches, beds and wardrobes, there was nothing else.

She was thinking about how to clean, but had no idea where to start when there was a knock on the door.
