Chapter 15 The 38th Parallel

Lu Yanqing paused slightly as he tidied up the bedding on the floor; he refused.

"No need, I'm used to sleeping here." The voice was devoid of any emotion.

Wen Nan threw off the covers and got out of bed, then immediately tidied up the makeshift bed that Lu Yanqing had laid out on the floor.

Lu Yanqing wanted to stop him, but his legs were weak and he had just been chilled. Wen Nan was as strong as an ox and moved very quickly.

Lu Yanqing reached out to pull the blanket from her feet, and almost fell over because of Wen Nan's strong force.

Wen Nan turned her head, reached out and grabbed Lu Yanqing's arm, pulling him to the bedside.

"From now on, you'll be sleeping on the bed." Wen Nan's voice was forceful. It was the dead of winter, and the temperature outside was frighteningly low. Lu Yanqing was so thin; who knew if he could withstand the cold?

What if they freeze to death...?

She failed her mission because she wouldn't let people sleep in beds, causing them to freeze to death. It was a huge loss.

Lu Yanqing wanted to say something.

Wen Nan stared intently at Lu Yanqing. "We're husband and wife. Isn't it perfectly normal for us to sleep together?"

Lu Yanqing paused slightly, a strange expression appearing on his handsome face.

Wen Nan has always distanced herself from him and has never mentioned the words "husband and wife" to his face.

She had always looked down on him and always loathed him.

He's always been considered a cripple, and for him to be with Wen Nan is like a toad trying to eat a swan.

She constantly belittled him, calling him a useless scholar...

He was lame and a scholar, someone she had always looked down upon.

Wen Nan took a quilt, folded it into a long strip, and placed it in the middle of the bed. Lu Yanqing had one quilt, and she had one quilt.

"Well... um, the 38th parallel, how about we don't cross that line?"

Lu Yanqing has not yet answered.

Wen Nan was already lying on the inside, with the blanket covering her face.

There was clearly no room for negotiation.

Lu Yanqing blew out the lamp and lay down next to Wen Nan. There was a quilt between them, but the cold wind howled outside... like the mournful howl of a night dog.

But Wen Nan's steady breathing seemed to be amplified dozens of times. Lu Yanqing lay on the bed, not daring to turn over, his eyes closed, unable to sleep for most of the night.

Later, Lu Yanqing's consciousness gradually faded...

Wen Nan was a light sleeper. It wasn't until Lu Yanqing tossed and turned frequently in the middle of the night that Wen Nan groggily opened her eyes.

Wen Nan turned her head, and under the moonlight, she could clearly see the eighteen-year-old boy: sword-like eyebrows, bright eyes, a furrowed brow, and flushed cheeks...

Wen Nan stood up nimbly and placed his hand on Lu Yanqing's forehead. The intense heat that followed made Wen Nan withdraw his hand.

Lu Yanqing caught a chill and developed a fever.

Wen Nan fetched some cold water, placed the icy handkerchief on Lu Yanqing's forehead, and then boiled some hot water.

Tell Lu Yanqing to get up and drink some water.

This place is materially scarce, and it's a small mountain village. You probably wouldn't find a doctor even if you searched for miles around.

What's more... they have no money.

While applying a cold compress and changing it frequently, Wen Nan woke Lu Yanqing up to drink water.

Lu Yanqing's forehead was covered in cold sweat, and Wen Nan hadn't slept all night.

The next day, a rooster from the neighboring village crowed.

Wen Nan, sporting dark circles under her eyes, looked at Lu Yanqing, whose fever had subsided but whose face was still pale.

After much hesitation, Wen Nan finally went to the village chief's house.

The village chief's son, Yang Sheng, also went to school in the city. He became a scholar... but most of the students at the prestigious schools were from wealthy families.

Lu Yanqing was able to attend school only because of the Wen family.

Yang Sheng did not attend a prestigious academy, but rather a primary school in the city.

However, Wen Nan still went to ask Yang Sheng for help in asking for leave for Lu Yanqing.

Yang Sheng readily agreed.
