“It seems like things aren’t going well in the village lately. You should hurry up and buy a few peach wood swords and go find a Taoist priest in the east of the city to get some talismans to stick up,” Yang Zhaodi said to Wen Nan furtively.
Wen Nan raised his eyebrows slightly.
"What's going on?" Wen Nan asked while washing clothes in the river.
“A few days ago, many chickens and ducks that people in the village raised disappeared.” Yang Zhaodi said mysteriously.
"It must have been stolen." Wen Nan didn't take it seriously.
Upon hearing this, Yang Zhaodi clicked her tongue, slapped her palm with the back of her hand, and stomped her foot on the ground.
"If only that were true," Yang Zhaodi whispered in Wen Nan's ear.
"But the chickens and ducks are gone, they're gone, but the next day there'll be a pool of blood... right there on the ground, it's horribly red!"
“They left behind a pile of bones and a bunch of chicken feathers, nothing else.” Yang Zhaodi.
Wen Nan raised his eyebrows slightly.
"Could it have been eaten by a weasel?" Wen Nan asked again.
Yang Zhaodi clapped her hands and whispered in Wen Nan's ear, "The whole village knows now. Your family is busy; you have two scholars at home, and you have to go to the city to take care of the business..."
"A couple of days ago, Li Feng, the chickens that Grandpa Li raised were stolen. He said it happened in the middle of the night, in the dark, when he couldn't see anything. Grandpa Li heard the chickens squawking outside, and oh my, the sound was so pitiful."
"Just like you thought, he assumed it was a weasel stealing the chickens. So he grabbed a stick and went outside..."
"Who knew? I should have looked, but I was shocked when I did!" Yang Zhaodi exclaimed in surprise, clapping her hands as she spoke.
"What did he see?" Wen Nan asked at that moment.
Yang Zhaodi had no ill intentions towards anyone; she just liked to listen to gossip and also liked to gossip herself. She was a fairly friendly person.
When Yang Zhaodi saw that Wen Nan had taken the initiative to strike up a conversation, she became even more enthusiastic.
"A female ghost in white, with disheveled hair and a three-inch-long tongue hanging out, her hands were covered in blood, the blood of the chicken on the ground."
Old Master Li opened the door a crack, and what he saw stunned him. His legs trembled. The female ghost was gone, and the chicken had turned into a pile of bones. Yang Zhaodi described it as if she were right there in the story.
It was as if Yang Zhaodi had witnessed it herself.
"That female ghost had a blue face and fangs, a red tongue that was three feet long, and long, sharp fingernails like blades. She just stuck them into the chicken's body."
"That chicken tried its best to escape, letting out a sharp cry, but it still turned into a pile of white bones..." Yang Zhaodi became more and more excited as she spoke.
Wen Nan raised his eyebrows slightly.
"No way." Wen Nan had never believed in these supernatural things.
She disagreed.
Yang Zhaodi shook her head. "This has never happened before. It's really frightening that something like this is happening now. Just in case, you should buy a peach wood sword and put it in the house."
Yang Zhaodi spoke earnestly.
Wen Nan casually agreed, though she naturally didn't believe any of it.
A few days later, Wang Hunzi rushed to Lianhua Village in the middle of the day, panting heavily, and knocked hard on the vermilion gate.
"Lady Wen, Lady Wen, something terrible has happened, something terrible has happened..." Wang Hunzi gasped for breath.
Wen Nan heard the noise and quickly came to open the door.
The store is busiest right now; at lunchtime, people are so busy they can barely keep up.
Why is Wang Hunzi here at this time?
Wen Nan opened the door.
Wang Hunzi was panting heavily, his face flushed red from running, and beads of sweat still clinging to his forehead.
Wen Nan opened the door and handed a glass of water to Wang Hunzi, who drank it all in one gulp.
Wang Hunzi didn't have time to wait for the oxcart; he ran back from the city because he was in a huge hurry.
After running such a long way back, Wang Hunzi was already out of breath.
"Take your time, don't rush." Wen Nan poured Wang Hunzi another cup, which he drank in one gulp. His breathing gradually calmed down, and he wiped the water droplets from his mouth.
"Mrs. Wen, those shameless Wang Fugui and his wife, they opened a Xia Man Lou restaurant right across from our food stall!" Wang Hunzi said through gritted teeth.
"The other day they were doing renovations across the street, so nothing was showing up. The renovations were all covered up, so we didn't notice anything. Today, when they opened, they lifted the curtain and revealed the sign, and that's when we realized it was Wang Fugui!" Wang Hunzi said, kicking the floor hard.
He was furious.
Wennan, on the other hand, is much calmer.
She had been there once before, and the restaurant across the street was under renovation. How could Wang Fugui and his wife afford to take over a restaurant?
Wen Nan raised his eyebrows slightly.
Wang Hunzi saw that Wen Nan wasn't in a hurry at all.
"The crayfish are cheaper than ours. Wen Niangzi, our shop has no business now. They've all taken it all away!" Wang Hunzi gritted his teeth in anger. He's usually busy to death at noon, but as soon as the crayfish shop across the street opens its doors...
The prices are cheap, and there are opening discounts.
They all went to the other side, making Wang Hunzi's side seem very deserted compared to the bustling scene there.
On one side of the street, the shops were bustling with customers, while the stalls next to them were nearly empty.
I'm usually so busy, but today I can only watch.
There are no customers at all, so they can't get busy.
Wen Nan raised his eyebrows slightly.
"How much is a serving of crayfish across the street?" Wen Nan raised an eyebrow, her tone calm, and poured herself a cup of tea.
"Forty coins," Wang Hunzi gritted his teeth.
In Wennan, it costs fifty coins per serving.
He managed to get the price down.
Wen Nan nodded.
"No need to rush. You should take a good rest these two days. You've been busy for so long." Wen Nan said calmly.
Wang Hunzi was so anxious he was practically stomping his feet.
Despite Wang Hunzi's extreme urgency, Wen Nan still went to the store.
Just as Wang Hunzi described, things were indeed very miserable.
Chef Chen came out of the kitchen; there was no one outside, so he couldn't work in the kitchen anymore.
No one is ordering food, so there's no point in making it.
With tears welling up in his eyes, Boss Mo looked at Wen Nan and said, "Boss Wen, I have let you down!"
Old Mo was crying his eyes out.
Wen Nan took a step back in disgust.
"It's not your fault. Don't blame yourself. You two should take a good rest these two days; you've both been exhausted."
No one expected Wen Nan's reaction to be so indifferent.
He actually turned around and comforted them.
Mo Laosan choked up, "Boss Wen, you're such a good person."
Master Chen, Wang Hunzi, and the tearful Mo Laoda and the bewildered Mo Lao Er were all on the verge of losing their heads.
"A good person!"
Wen Nan "..."
So she got friend-zoned again? Or maybe a whole bunch of people gave her friend-zoned treatment.
The shop was deserted. Wen Nan's gaze fell on the opposite side, where the place was packed with people.
The people greeting guests outside were none other than Mr. and Mrs. Wang Fugui.
His face was practically wrinkled from smiling so much.
