Chapter 34 Familiar Plot Unfolds
The boy in white looked up in a daze and saw a familiar woman in pink running towards him. "Does it look good? It took me ages to finish this."
Before the boy could speak, Little Shadow raised her hand, her voice rising, "You did this?"
"Of course," Mu Jianjian lowered her head, her eyes full of pride and smugness, "Jian... Yaoling's move is so impressive, you can tell if she's good or not. Isn't it beautiful?"
The little shadow's gaze turned fervent as she looked at the woman, nodding repeatedly, "Beautiful, beautiful! I just went to see my room, and I love it!"
Mu Jianjian smiled with satisfaction; it was worth all the time she spent cleaning!
"Your Highness, I have arranged all the books in the study, but I don't recognize the characters, so they may look messy."
The boy met the woman's gentle yet earnest eyes. He looked away and asked, "Why are you cleaning?"
“They abandoned me yesterday, not caring whether I lived or died,” Mu Jianjian replied. “I’m going to live here from now on, you’re not going to kick me out too, are you…”
The pitiful tone made Xiao Yingzi lose his ability to think. Now his mind was full of the jade ornaments in his room. He shook his head repeatedly, "No, no."
"Then where did these things come from?" the boy asked indifferently.
He wouldn't be so foolish as to think that a maid could go to the Imperial Household Department to receive these things.
Mu Jianjian made no attempt to hide it, "I tricked His Highness and gave him a good beating."
The boy then glanced at her face again, his gaze probing. After a moment, he stepped into the hall. "Little Shadow, pick up the book."
The little shadow picked up the books that had fallen to the ground one by one, then quietly walked to Mu Jianjian's side and whispered, "It's just me and His Highness in this hall. Don't be fooled by His Highness's cold appearance; he's actually very kind and good-hearted."
Before Mu Jianjian could react, the little shadow quickly followed the boy away.
——
After a long day, Mu Jianjian finally got some rest. She went to the room she had prepared for herself and buried herself in the blankets.
Having already spent two days in this place called "Upper Realm," and even getting caught up in the schemes and plots between brothers, Mu Jianjian was terrified that she wouldn't be able to go back, but she could only take it one step at a time.
Mu Jianjian fell asleep in a daze, while the boy looked at his simply decorated and bright room and fell silent.
"Your Highness! There are so many more clothes!" Little Shadow exclaimed happily, looking at the pile of brocade robes of different colors in the closet. "You won't have to wear this one all the time anymore!"
“She was sent by Bai Ji to be planted next to me,” the young man said.
"Sent by His Highness?" Little Shadow stopped what she was doing. "But Yaoling was punished by His Highness and almost died on those weeds. How could this be?"
Seeing the little shadow's clearly disbelieving expression, the boy felt helpless.
The moment he saw the woman in pink appear, he understood what had happened. Bai Ji must have thought he had saved her and was trying to test him.
You underestimated him too much, dear brother.
——
The next day, Mu Jianjian went straight to the study to get her books after she woke up. She had smelled a musty smell when she was cleaning the room the day before, and after thinking about it, she decided that she should take them to the lakeside to dry them.
Sunlight shone and a gentle breeze blew. The white-clad boy reading a book on a stone bench in the lakeside pavilion was eventually dazzled by a busy girl in the distance.
What is she doing?
"I just asked her, and Yaoling said the smell of the books is too strong, so they need to be aired out one by one," Little Shadow said from behind.
"There are at least tens of thousands of books in the study. How can she possibly finish airing them all out if she takes them out one by one like this?" The young man said indifferently, looking down at the pages.
“Oh dear, Your Highness, Yaoling is drying in the sun every day. She’ll be done drying eventually, there’s no rush,” Little Shadow added. “You have no idea how strong the smell is inside.”
Unable to hear the commotion in the pavilion in the middle of the lake, Mu Jianjian, sitting by the lake, was still patiently busy airing out her books.
She never intended to harm the young prince; she simply felt that Bai Ji's motives were impure, so she went along with it and helped the young prince arrange his palace, hoping to gain something for him.
With his unchanging expression and tone of voice, and his tattered clothes, Mu Jianjian found it hard not to connect the young prince with her own childhood self, after all, they were both children without parents' love.
"So, you were the one who was called away by Brother Ji yesterday?" A spoiled voice suddenly appeared in front of Mu Jianjian.
Mu Jianjian: ?
Ah, what's with this familiar plot?
She slowly looked up, holding the book, and saw a stunningly beautiful girl standing in front of her, her bright almond-shaped eyes glaring at her with jealousy and anger.
The girl wore a light blue and gray dress with a sheer blue lining. Her engraved earrings swayed with her voice. She had a pair of finely patterned satin pouches tied around her waist, and a pair of cloud-patterned boots peeked out from under her dress. Two maids followed behind her.
"Wow, where did this fairy come from? Her temperament is so good!" Mu Jianjian said innocently, her eyes filled with "ignorant admiration".
The girl was clearly taken aback by this move; her previous arrogance vanished as if doused with a bucket of water. "R-really?"
