Chapter 16 Picking Mushrooms and Catching Chicks

After arriving home, Shen Nian continued to sit at the door and chop bamboo. The bamboo had to be chopped into strips before it could be woven into things.

Xia Tian felt relieved when he saw Shen Nian’s calm face.

I’m afraid that on days like this, he’ll start to have wild thoughts again, which will be detrimental to his recovery.

Xia Tian went to the kitchen and lit a fire to boil a large pot of hot water.

Take out the pig intestines bought in the morning and start cleaning them carefully.

I have plenty of time today, so I will slowly work on it in the yard during the summer.

First, wash it twice with warm water, then turn the pig intestines over and use a bamboo stick to scrape the grease inside repeatedly to clean it. This grease is the main source of the fishy smell.

When villagers process pig intestines, they wash them several times and cook them directly when they feel they are clean.

Farmers rarely eat meat, and they are reluctant to buy even cheap meat like pig intestines.

I buy it occasionally to satisfy my craving, so I wouldn't be willing to scrape off the grease. So, it smells fishy just like those aunties said.

After scraping off the grease, add coarse salt and rub it repeatedly.

After washing off all the slime, rinse it several times with warm water.

Add flour and continue to scrub off the remaining grease and mucus. Finally, wash repeatedly with warm water until the water becomes clear.

If she told her aunts that she used salt and flour to wash the clothes, they would definitely say she was a spendthrift.

Next time I will try to see if I can clean it using only rice water and wood ash. If I can, I can add a dish to the aunts’ table.

After washing the pig intestines, the water in the tank is almost used up.

I braised the pig intestines, packed up the wooden barrels and went to fetch water in the summer, and it started to drizzle while I was walking on the road.

Xia Tian quickened his pace, and when he went to fetch water into the yard, he saw Chen Nian collecting the dried bamboo shoots, bitter herbs, and dandelions that were drying in the yard.

He quickly carried the bucket into the kitchen and went to the yard to clean up with Shen Nian.

By the time we had finished putting away the things in the yard, the rain was getting heavier.

It was still early to cook dinner, so Xia Tian looked at the pile of bamboo strips that Chen Nian had chopped, and moved a stool to sit next to them to study how to weave them.

The bamboo strips had been polished smooth by Chen Nian. Xia Tian recalled the bamboo weaving videos she had watched before and found that her memory had improved significantly since she drank the spiritual spring water.

As long as I think about the books and videos I have read before, I can remember them clearly, just like watching a movie.

Moreover, now I can remember people and things I have seen immediately. It is no exaggeration to say that I have a photographic memory.

Perhaps this is also a benefit for time travelers.

Xia Tian was secretly happy.

If you have never woven before, then start with a simple bamboo basket to practice first.

I started editing and realized that, um... my brain has learned it, but my hands haven't.

Sure enough, there is a gap between ideal and reality!

Finally, Xia Tian took great pains to weave a bamboo basket that was barely presentable before dinner.

Oh, let’s go make dinner first. Handicrafts are not her forte, it was not the case in the past and it is not the case now.

In the summer, when I go to the kitchen and see that the pig intestines are almost done with braising, I take them out and put them in a basin, pour in the braising liquid and continue soaking them, so that they will taste better.

I bought some tofu today, cut it in half and made some mapo tofu with soybean paste.

I kept a small piece of the other half to make tofu and egg soup later, and cut the rest into slices. I poured oil into the pan and fry them on both sides until golden brown. Then I added chopped chili peppers and garlic and stir-fried them to make the fried tofu.

He also cut a plate of braised pig intestines.

The main dish today is the tofu feast, hehe!

Shen Nian was already convinced by Xia Tian’s cooking skills, no matter what dish she prepared, it tasted delicious.

Xia Tian also admired Shen Nian so much that she even wove a bamboo basket that was a hundred times better than hers while she was making dinner.

That’s good, Shen Nian will have endless handicrafts to do in the future, haha!

It rains heavily during the Qingming Festival!

It drizzled for three days in a row.

During these three days, under Xia Tian's theoretical guidance, Chen Nian wove two backpacks, one large and one small, two small stools of different heights, and a large bamboo sieve.

If I hadn’t considered Shen Nian’s poor health, I would probably have made up more.

Xia Tian didn't expect that Chen Nian's hands were so skillful. As long as she gestured and said it once, he could make it up. It was impossible not to admire him.

However, Shen Nian had something to do, so he had no time to think about random things, so it could be considered a blessing in disguise.

The rain finally stopped, and Mrs. Yao from next door came to call Xia Tian to go up the mountain to pick mushrooms together.

After every rain, mushrooms appear in large numbers on the mountain, and almost every household in the village goes to pick them.

Xia Tian gave Chen Nian some instructions, then he put on his backpack, took his basket and axe and went up the mountain with Sister Yao.

When they arrived, they found that some people had arrived earlier than them, and some children were picking mushrooms with baskets.

Xia Tian and Mrs. Yao quickly found a place with few people and started picking up the trash.

The mountain was still a bit slippery after it rained, and it was easy to fall if you were not careful.

Xia Tian took a longer branch, lowered his head, and searched carefully while pulling through the grass.

There are many mushrooms on the mountain after the rain, but most of them need to be seen by pulling away the grass, and you also need to distinguish which mushrooms are edible and which are not.

However, this is almost not difficult for the villagers who have been picking mushrooms since childhood.

After about half an hour of picking, Xia Tian's backpack was half full. Mrs. Yao had also picked up almost everything.

Seeing that there were many edible wild vegetables on the mountain, Xia Tian also picked some tender leaves.

It was almost noon and Xiatian's backpack was full. He called Sister Yao to go home and make lunch.

Most of the people who come to pick mushrooms are aunts and sisters-in-law. They almost all go home to cook at noon, so everyone goes back together.

On the way back, Xia Tian asked Mrs. Yao if she knew anyone who had chicks for sale, as she wanted to buy a few to raise.
