Chapter 255 Cholera breaks out in the capital

The Spring Examination lasts for nine days and starts on the third day of March.

The original date for the Spring Examination was February, but because of the disaster in the south and the influx of refugees, the date was changed to the third day of March before the New Year.

On the third day of the Spring Examination, some students in the Imperial College began to experience vomiting and diarrhea.

At first I thought I had eaten something bad. The invigilator didn’t take it seriously, and neither did the students taking the exam. They still gritted their teeth and insisted on taking the exam.

After all, the Spring Examination is held only once every three years, and I can't miss it just because of illness.

Some students have studied hard for more than ten years, and some may have studied for decades, just waiting to pass the exam and earn a future for themselves and their families.

No matter how uncomfortable it is, you have to endure and finish the exam.

Unfortunately, things went against our wishes. After another three days, students in the Imperial Examination Hall began to faint.

There was no other choice but for the invigilator to report to the emperor and quickly send the fainted student out.

The emperor attached great importance to the candidates taking the Spring Examination and directly arranged for imperial physicians to treat them.

At first, the imperial physician thought that the patient had an upset stomach or something, and prescribed some gastrointestinal medicine, but the condition did not improve at all.

Moreover, more and more candidates in the Imperial Examination Hall began to show the same symptoms, and even the emperor had to take it seriously.

The imperial physician was directly assigned to examine the sick candidates.

This examination was not a big deal. The imperial physician found that the symptoms were very similar to those of cholera and quickly reported it to the emperor.

The emperor was shocked when he heard this and quickly summoned his ministers to discuss the matter.

The capital city is the capital of Dagan, and its population is even more dense. In addition, it is the time of the Spring Examination, and there are even more students and their families coming to the capital city from all directions. Add to that some refugees, and the capital city is now really overcrowded.

"Physician, please tell me about the situation first." The emperor said tiredly. He only rested for less than two hours last night.

"Yes, Your Majesty." The imperial physician stepped forward and explained in detail what he had found. "Recently, candidates for the Imperial Examination have been vomiting and fainting one after another.

After examination, I found that the symptoms were very similar to those of cholera, with diarrhea and vomiting occurring first.

The diarrhea was severe but the stomach didn't hurt, and then the skin became dry, the eyes became sunken, and I felt thirsty and irritable, and then I fainted."

The imperial physician paused for a moment and added, "If treatment is not timely, death will occur."

The ministers who heard this all looked solemn!

The imperial physician, still worried that no one was taking it seriously enough, emphasized, "If it's confirmed to be cholera, it will spread very quickly."

The imperial physician had actually already determined in his heart that this was cholera, but so far only cases had been found in the Imperial Examination Hall, and he didn't know if there were similar cases in other parts of the capital.

"Your Majesty, I suggest that you quickly investigate to see if there are any other similar symptoms in the capital."

The emperor nodded and said, "Yes, let the Minister of Revenue handle this matter as soon as possible."

"Yes, Your Majesty." The Minister of Revenue agreed and went out to make arrangements.

The other ministers had no good solution and could only wait for news.

The imperial physician is asking everyone to pay attention to hygiene and avoid going to crowded places.

Just as the emperor arranged for people to conduct a city-wide investigation, similar symptoms had already appeared in some areas where poor people were concentrated, and some people had even died.

But everyone thought that they had just eaten something bad, and the people did not have much money to treat it, so some of them endured it on their own, and some just took some herbs.

No one took his death seriously and just buried him.

Those who took it a little more seriously went to see a doctor, but no one thought it was a plague.

By the time the Minister of Revenue received the news, five or six deaths had already occurred in the areas in the north of the city where the poor were concentrated.

The Minister of Revenue scolded the officials in charge of the area and then quickly reported it to the emperor.

The emperor is now certain that this is definitely the cholera that the imperial physician was talking about.

Civilian deaths have already occurred, which shows that the disease has been going on for quite some time, and the number of people infected during this period is estimated to be quite large.

The emperor rubbed his brows with a headache and ordered Eunuch Xu, "Go and find Master Shen."

There is no way out now. The plague has already appeared in the south, and cholera has broken out in the capital. If we wait for the imperial physician and others to develop a feasible prescription, more people will probably be infected, and we are afraid that those who are sick will not be able to wait.

He couldn't do such a thing as to joke with the lives of ordinary people.

So I can only trouble Shen Nian and his wife again.

It was almost time to get off duty, and Shen Nian was packing up to leave when Eunuch Xu arrived.

Eunuch Xu didn't dare to ask anyone else to do it, and came directly to ask Shen Nian.

"Lord Shen, it's a good thing you haven't left your post yet." Eunuch Xu touched the sweat on his forehead. He had rushed all the way here just now, fearing that Shen Nian would leave and delay the emperor's business.

"What's the matter, Eunuch Xu?" Shen Nian stood up and poured a cup of tea for Eunuch Xu. "Have a sip of tea first to moisten your throat."

"Thank you, Lord Shen." Eunuch Xu took it and drank it in one gulp. After catching his breath, he continued, "The Emperor invites you."

Shen Nian put down the things she had packed and prepared to go out, “Then let’s go quickly.”

When the two arrived, the emperor didn't beat around the bush and said directly, "Chu Xuan, I'm going to trouble you and your wife again this time."

“Your Majesty, please give your orders.” Shen Nian said loudly.

"People have died in the north of the city, and the imperial physician is now certain it was cholera.

But I can’t wait until the imperial physician is researching the prescription, for I’m afraid that more people will die before the prescription is developed.

So I'm wondering if I could trouble Madam Shen to control the plague first, so that the imperial physician can buy time to develop a prescription."
