Chapter Forty-Two: Rebirth

As the sunset faded and night fell...

The candle flame flickered and burned its last embers.

Ye Xuanling was worried, so she stayed and waited with me for him to wake up.

"Go and rest! I'll keep watch over Sixth Brother here!"

"I've seen him injured before, but I never imagined it would be this serious!"

"Sixth Brother was born to fight for the country; his wounds are merely a symbol!"

Ye Lisheng groaned in pain, mumbling incoherently.

"Ye Lisheng... Ye Lisheng!" I called out over and over, trying to wake him from the nightmare.

I moved closer and heard him shouting, "Rebirth!"

An unnamed fire rose in my heart.

He questioned, "Who is reborn in the afterlife?"

He groggily opened his eyes, grabbed my hand, and kept calling for rebirth, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't break free.

That night, he kept muttering the name "rebirth".

I think the woman he misses so much must be a beautiful young lady.

The rain started falling like a broken string of beads, never stopping.

Ye Lisheng woke up, but her face was still pale, and she coughed from time to time, looking like she was in pain.

"It's time to take your medicine!"

I handed him a bowl of dark, pungent medicine; the acrid smell was noticeable even from a distance.

I noticed his two handsome eyebrows were furrowed together. I never expected that he, who is usually so aloof, would be afraid of hardship. It was truly adorable.

He glanced at me cautiously twice, and only spoke after thinking it over carefully.

"Didn't you hear what nonsense I was spouting last night?"

"Um!"

Hearing me say that, he felt relieved.

A wicked smile crept across my lips as I mimicked his cold tone and said, "I was the one who stood guard by your bedside last night!"

He stood stiffly, and seeing me turn away angrily, he immediately explained...

"I have no idea who that woman is?"

"If you don't know, why are you calling someone by their name?"

"I do not know!"

"It seems the prince has too many beautiful women and forgot about them as soon as he turned his back!"

His eyebrows curved into a smile, and a wicked grin curled at the corners of his pale lips.

Are you jealous?

"This girl only eats, she doesn't get jealous!"

He burst out laughing: "Your expression gave you away!"

Seeing that I was unhappy, he pulled me into his arms and said affectionately, "You are the only one in my heart!"

"Hmph! I don't care!"

"I'm taking you to see someone!" he said, leading me into his room.

Upon entering, a chilly atmosphere immediately greets you; black curtains and a screen carved with winter plum blossoms in the snow.

As I watched him close the door tightly, my heart immediately started pounding.

She muttered shyly to herself, "Isn't Ye Lisheng moving too fast? I'm not ready yet!"

He looked at me with a puzzled expression: "What are you standing there for? Come and help!"

"No...good!"

As the scroll slowly descended, a graceful beauty came into view. Dressed in splendid robes, she stood amidst a hundred flowers, attracting butterflies from afar.

"How beautiful!" I couldn't help but exclaim.

The thought that she might be the deceased he kept talking about made him feel less pained.

Perhaps sensing her presence, she quickly said, "She is my birth mother."

"ah?"

Since I entered the Prince of Anyang's residence, I've never heard him mention his birth mother; I thought she was dead! Hearing him mention her now is quite a surprise.

"Didn't you ask me last time why the Empress's seat next to Father Emperor was vacant!"

I could roughly guess something from his words.

"Is she the Empress?"

"No, but Father Emperor said that the only candidate for Empress can be my mother!"

"Then why didn't I see her?"

He looked up at the sky and laughed, a hint of desolation in his voice: "Emperors have always been known for their romantic escapades. My mother had a younger sister, and they both entered the palace as concubines. Watching my mother receive the Emperor's favor, the demons in her heart grew stronger day by day."

"On the day of her coronation, she plotted to put my mother in danger, but her scheme was discovered by my father's Imperial Guards, who killed her. The coronation ceremony was canceled. Afterwards, my mother was filled with remorse and eventually fled from here. My father never appointed another empress."

"Do you know where she went?"

"I also want to know where she went. I have never given up looking for her all these years!"

I put my arm around his waist and comforted him with heartache, "Don't worry, she must be doing well now, and you will find her too!"

Those melancholy eyes seemed to rain down on my heart.

A thought suddenly popped into her mind: "If I disappeared one day, would you look for me?"

"No!" He refused without even thinking, which made me a little sad.

"I will never give you the chance to disappear from my sight!" That domineering tone made me feel as sweet as if I had eaten honey.

My heart feels warm, as if baked by the sun. In this world where I know no one, he is the one who brings me love and warmth.

What is your mother's name?

"My surname is Mo, and the 'Li' in my name is a homophone of the 'Lizi' in my mother's name!"

"Mo Li! What a meaningful name!"

"I also met an old lady surnamed Mo when I was in Wuyou Valley!"

"Worry-Free Valley?" he countered.

"Yes! What's wrong?"

His brows furrowed, as if he had remembered something, and the scene after the fire in Wuyou Valley flashed through his mind like a movie.

After a fire, Worry-Free Valley was burned beyond recognition, and Ye Lisheng arrived with his personal guards to deal with it.

They walked towards the denser woods, with Lingran talking incessantly behind them.

"Your Highness, you can leave this matter to your subordinates. Why did you have to come personally?"
