Ye Lisheng, dressed in a purple brocade robe and riding a brown-red horse, looked dashing and heroic.
Suddenly, a wicked smile appeared on his lips, and he tilted his head slightly to the left.
The wind whistled past my ear, a short dagger grazed it, startling the horse into a neigh.
Ye Lisheng patted the horse's head to comfort it.
At that moment, the men in black on the rooftop surged forward, their thin blades gleaming coldly in the sunlight.
"No matter who sent you, I will not let you leave alive!"
Ye Lisheng leaped onto the rooftop. His reputation was widespread, and although the men in black were wary, they had no choice but to fight back with all their might because they were under orders.
Dealing with a few men in black was a piece of cake for Ye Lisheng; in no time at all, they were dead and lying on the ground.
A man dressed in blue robes and wearing a veil rushed towards Ye Lisheng, his aura menacing.
The sound of footsteps clattering against the blue tiles echoed like a symphony.
The man's moves were ruthless, each strike aimed directly at Ye Lisheng's vital points.
Suddenly, Ye Lisheng pointed his sword at the man's neck; a millimeter closer and he would be dead. But Ye Lisheng clearly didn't want him dead.
"Does Your Highness wish to spar with me in martial arts?"
His identity being exposed ignited the fury within Prince Yu.
He used his short dagger to knock the sword out of Ye Lisheng's hand and said viciously, "Since you can't protect Murong, why don't you hand her over to me to protect!"
Ye Lisheng stared coldly at him: "You can speak to the Emperor on his behalf. If the Emperor agrees, then you can come and take her away!"
Prince Yu felt as if a volcano was erupting from his chest all the way to his brain.
"You know perfectly well that Father Emperor will not agree!"
"Is that so? Then I can't help you, Prince Yu!"
After he left, Ling Ran emerged from the shadows and asked, puzzled, "Why did Your Highness let Prince Yu go just now?"
"We are all born of the same root, why are we so eager to harm each other? He is, after all, my elder brother."
"Send more men to protect the young lady!"
"yes!"
"Slap!" Prince Yu received a slap on the face as soon as he returned to his residence.
The maids and servants were so frightened they didn't dare to breathe.
Prince Yu stared at the person before him, who was none other than his mother, Consort Yin. Although she was old, time had not left many marks on her; she was even more charming than when she was young.
"Mother Consort Yin!"
"You unfilial son, how could you be so impulsive as to openly attack the Prince of Anyang!"
"Your subject is furious that he injured Murong!"
Consort Yin looked at her with a face full of disappointment: "What's so good about that woman!"
"I warned you before that the position of Crown Prince has not yet been chosen, and the Prince of Anyang is currently favored by your father. Don't provoke him, but you just wouldn't listen!"
"Your son cannot stand by and watch her suffer!"
After looking around and finding nothing amiss, Consort Yin said, "If you become the emperor, what you want—women—will be easy to obtain!"
Prince Yu looked shocked: "Your mother wants your son..."
"Your mother has said all she has to say. Think it through carefully. Only by standing at the highest point, so that others look up to you, can you earn respect and obtain what you desire!"
After pondering for a moment, Prince Yu smiled meaningfully and said, "Your subject thanks Your Majesty for your guidance."
Consort Yin felt uneasy after leaving Prince Yu's residence. She felt that keeping Murong Kui around was always a threat, and that Prince Yu would lose his mind whenever Murong Kui was involved.
Just when I thought life would continue peacefully, I had no idea what I was about to face.
Ye Xuanling sat listlessly in my Mingyu Pavilion.
Watching him eagerly devour the plate of fruit, I quickly snatched it away and held it protectively in my arms.
I glared at him fiercely: "Haven't seen you for days, and the first thing you do is try to steal my food!"
"Who told you to have the most delicious food here, and all of it is stuff I've never tried before!"
Speaking of this, I proudly puffed out my chest. I love to eat, and naturally, I love to cook too. I've experimented quite a bit, but unfortunately, resources here are limited, so there's not much I can make. But I'm still quite satisfied.
"Of course they don't even look at who did it!"
With a mischievous grin, I teased, "What brings you here today, Yanran? Where are you?"
He sighed deeply as he spoke of this.
"She asked Butler Liu for leave and went home!"
Did she say what she wanted to say?
"No!"
"You don't even care!"
"Sigh!" He sighed helplessly, looking up at the sky.
"I had asked her to bring her family to the palace, but she repeatedly declined. Seeing that she was making things difficult for me, I couldn't force her!"
"I heard her mention that she has a seriously ill younger brother!"
He exclaimed as if he had discovered some earth-shattering secret: "Why didn't you say so sooner!"
After saying that, he left in a hurry.
I shouted angrily at his retreating back, "You didn't even ask!"
Realizing something was amiss, he chased after him, instructing before leaving, "Xiangye, I'll be returning to the manor a little later tonight. Please tell the Prince!"
It took less than half an incense stick's time to reach Yanran's residence on horseback.
What comes into view is a thatched hut, with a grass wall that looks as if it would collapse with a gust of wind.
A few simple tables and chairs, some of the chairs even missing a leg.
Ye Xuanling was shocked. He knew Yanran's family was struggling financially, but he never expected it to be like this.
Hearing the commotion, Yanran came out from the inner room, and was somewhat surprised to find that it was us.
She was dressed in plain clothes, somewhat thin, with dark circles under her eyes, looking like she hadn't slept well, and her whole appearance was rather haggard.
"Yanran!"
She avoided Ye Xuanling's gaze and wiped the chair clean with her sleeve.
"I didn't expect you to come, so I didn't prepare anything!"
"Yanran, we're friends, you don't need to prepare anything!"
