She slowly raised her head, and in her almond-shaped eyes, which appeared particularly deep under the dim light, there was no fear, but rather a slowly spreading... almost excited, cold smile.

She even gently patted An'an's head, her voice unusually calm: "An'an, close your eyes, cover your ears, and count to one hundred."

Although An'an didn't understand, she instinctively trusted her sister and immediately did as she was told.

Just as Wang Laizi had one foot on the low wall and was about to call his accomplices to rush in—

"Clang!!!"

The flimsy wooden door of the educated youth settlement was kicked open from the inside.

The door slammed into the thug at the front with a whooshing sound, sending him flying backward with his stick, letting out a shrill scream.

Everyone, including Wang Laizi who had just settled on the top of the wall, was stunned by the sudden loud noise and the tragic state of his companion.

The dim light from the kerosene lamp poured out from the open doorway, clearly outlining the slender yet upright figure on the threshold.

Xu Zhili.

She wasn't carrying any weapons; she just stood there casually, her hands in the pockets of her faded old trousers.

The night breeze ruffled the stray hairs on her forehead, revealing her smooth forehead and her eyes that were now strikingly bright.

That gaze, like a blade tempered with ice, or an abyss burning with hellfire, swept over the astonished thugs outside the door, finally settling on Wang Laizi's face, twisted with fear.

A faint, cold smile curved her lips. Her voice was soft, yet it pierced the deathly silence of the night like an ice bead striking a bluestone slab.

"Hey, coming to my door in the middle of the night with 'tools'... You've come to deliver firewood?"

Her gaze swept meaningfully over the sticks in their hands, and then her smile vanished abruptly, leaving only a chilling coldness and an undisguised, albeit rare, excitement.

"Or... are you tired of living and want to test how sharp my knife is?"

Before the words were even finished, a flash of cold light appeared!

She had somehow pulled out the pig-slaughtering knife from her waistband—the one that had once killed wild boars and intimidated Granny Wang.

The blade, reflecting the pale moonlight and the dim lamplight inside the room, gleamed with a chilling light.

She even casually twirled the knife in her hand, the movement as fluid as breathing.

"hiss--!"

The remaining two thugs gasped. Looking at their companion lying on the ground groaning, then at the gleaming weapon in Xu Zhili's hand, and then at the expression on her face that was a mixture of coldness and madness, a chill instantly ran from the soles of their feet to the top of their heads.

What the hell is this woman?

This is clearly the King of Hell, who takes lives!

"Run...run!"

Someone shouted first, and fear instantly overwhelmed the small benefits promised by Wang Laizi.

The two scrambled and stumbled, dropping their sticks without looking back, and fled like frightened rabbits, not even caring about their companion on the ground.

Wang Laizi stood on the wall, his legs trembling violently.

He watched as Xu Zhili walked towards him step by step, the knife in her hand seemingly coming to life, exuding the aura of death.

He finally understood why his mother had wet herself that day. This woman... she wasn't a jinx, she was a madwoman, a ferocious beast in human skin!

“Xu…Xu, the educated youth…it’s a misunderstanding…it’s all a misunderstanding…” Wang Laizi’s voice trembled so badly that he was almost crying.

Xu Zhili stopped a few steps away from him, tilted her head slightly and looked at him with eyes like she was sizing up a dirty rat.

She lightly weighed the knife in her hand, her tone carrying a chillingly playful tone:

"A misunderstanding? You came to my doorstep with a stick and a machete... Wang Laizi, the sincerity of your 'misunderstanding' is truly..."

She paused, then her voice suddenly turned sharp, like a thunderclap.

"How despicable!"

"Get out!" That last word, like a solid ice pick, pierced Wang Laizi's heart.

Wang Laizi felt as if he had been granted a pardon. He tumbled and crawled off the wall into the yard, ignoring the pain. He dragged his still groaning companion to his feet and disappeared into the darkness with howls, leaving behind only a mess of footprints and an abandoned wooden stick.

Xie Yunze, holding a jujube wood stick, stood in the shadows inside the door, watching Xu Zhili. With a swift movement, the kitchen knife landed precisely on the wooden stake, and he returned to his calm and indifferent demeanor.

He was filled with complex emotions—awe at his sister's immense strength, self-reproach for failing to protect her, and an indescribable, deeply captivating feeling.

Xu Zhili paused at the door, but didn't turn around. Her voice, however, came clearly, carrying an undeniable calm:

"Next time, if someone brings firewood in the middle of the night again..."

She turned her head slightly, the moonlight illuminating half of her delicate jawline and the faint, chilling curve of her lips:

"Remember to remind them that my knife only loves to draw blood."

Inside the educated youth compound, a lingering smell of urine and the aftershocks of fear still hung in the air.

A few drops of suspicious dark liquid splattered on the muddy ground beside the threshold, the "medals" left behind by Wang Laizi as he scrambled away to escape.

The courtyard was eerily quiet. The educated youth had witnessed the whole thing through the cracks in the windows, but now they all retreated back inside, closing the doors and windows tightly, and even deliberately holding their breath.

No one wanted to go out and provoke Xu Zhili at this time—that Xu Zhili who held a kitchen knife, whose eyes were like icy blades, yet whose lips held a strange, almost gleeful smile, and who had driven Wang Laizi and his mother to their knees in fear.

That wasn't just a simple act of intimidation; it was a one-sided, chilling form of mental torture.

Only Bai Linlin, relying on what she thought was a friendship, pulled Lu Yanchen out.

Her face was still flushed with excitement, and she took a few steps forward, trying to grab Xu Zhili's arm: "Xu Zhiqing! You're amazing! Just now, that one swift move... uh..."

Her voice stopped abruptly.

Just a second before Bai Linlin touched her sleeve, Xu Zhili flicked her wrist with an extremely slight yet irresistible motion, as if brushing away an unsightly speck of dust, precisely deflecting Bai Linlin's hand.

His movements were fluid and natural; he didn't even glance at Bai Linlin, his gaze fixed on the deep night outside the courtyard gate, as if the farce just now was nothing more than a gentle breeze brushing past his ear.

Bai Linlin's hand froze in mid-air, her excitement momentarily gone, then replaced by a barely perceptible hint of embarrassment and... lingering fear.

She chuckled awkwardly, rubbing her hands together to cover her embarrassment: "Um... that... really cool! That coward Wang Laizi will probably avoid you like the plague from now on!"

Xu Zhili then slowly turned her head to the side.

She did smile, but the smile was as thin as ice shards in early winter, floating on the surface and not reaching her eyes at all.

Deep within those eyes lay a cold vortex, the remnants of a fierce battle, not yet fully subsided.
