Chapter 202 The Birth of Intelligent Robots
However, just before the installation, Xu Zhili came up with an even bolder idea: "Why not make a machine that can automatically check documents and identify people?"
The team members were stunned.
Automatically identify people?
Automatic document detection?
This sounds like a concept from a science fiction comic book.
"No, there are no ID cards here, so how can we identify people by their identification documents?"
“We can issue identification cards with magnetic strips or perforations to factory workers,”
Xu Zhili explained, "The machine reads the ID information and combines it with the facial recognition of the person entering. This can both speed up the passage and improve security."
This idea was extremely avant-garde at the time.
However, given the successful experience with intelligent machine recognition, the leadership still approved Xu Zhili to give it a try.
Inside the laboratory of the military region's arsenal, Xu Zhili had been working tirelessly for three months.
This time, their goal is even more ambitious: to develop an intelligent detection robot capable of autonomously identifying hazardous materials.
"Image recognition module debugging complete!"
"The motion control system is functioning normally!"
"Hazardous materials database has been loaded!"
Team members reported on their progress one by one.
Xu Zhili stood in front of a silver robot that was half her height, her expression focused.
This robot, named "Smart Guardian-1," not only possesses the previous X-ray scanning function but also incorporates a preliminary artificial intelligence recognition system, enabling it to move autonomously and assess hazard levels.
"Begin the first comprehensive test," Xu Zhili ordered.
The indicator light on the SmartGuard-1 changed from blue to green, emitting a soft electronic voice: "SmartGuard-1 has started up and is waiting for instructions."
Xu Zhili placed a wrench on the testing table: "Identify this item."
The robot moved to the front of the table, and its eye scanner emitted a red beam of light. After a moment, it reported: "Standard tool wrench, metal material, safety level: safe."
Next, Xu Zhili placed a simulated handgun on the table.
The robot immediately issued an alarm: "Firearm-like object detected. Hazard level: High. Immediate action recommended."
A round of applause erupted in the laboratory.
Senior engineer Master Zhou stroked his chin, clicking his tongue in amazement: "This thing can really recognize things? Amazing!"
Xu Zhili smiled and said, "This is just a basic test. The real challenge is to accurately identify hazardous materials in complex environments."
In subsequent tests, the team simulated various scenarios.
Hiding knives in books, filling beverage bottles with suspicious liquids, and even mixing explosive models into a pile of parts.
To everyone's surprise, the SmartGuard-1 was able to accurately identify the danger levels and provide corresponding risk assessments.
"Genius! Engineer Xu, you are truly a genius!"
Master Zhou couldn't help but exclaim again, "This robot has even sharper eyes than a veteran craftsman!"
Xu Zhili modestly shook her head: "It's just combining pattern recognition algorithms with sensor technology. Tomorrow we will conduct a practical test and run it for a day at the factory entrance."
The next morning, the Smart Guard-1 was transported to the main entrance of the arsenal.
Sentinel Zhang Jianjun curiously examined the gleaming silver robot: "Technician Xu, this new thing is even more advanced than the metal box from last time!"
"The Smart Guardian-1 has autonomous movement and identification capabilities, which can reduce the workload of our comrades," Xu Zhili explained.
As work hours begin, the number of people gradually increases.
Everyone was very curious about this robot that could move on its own, and they gathered around and discussed it.
"Can this robot really inspect things?"
"I heard they're even more powerful than humans!"
"Won't they think our lunch is a dangerous item?"
Xu Zhili turned on the loudspeaker: "Comrades, this is the factory's newly equipped intelligent security inspection robot, Zhiwei-1. Please cooperate with its inspection work."
The first to step forward was veteran technician Liu. He was pushing his bicycle, preparing to enter the factory, when the Smart Guard-1 quickly moved in front of him: "Moving vehicle detected, requesting scanning permission."
Master Liu was startled: "Xu... Xu Ke? I'm allowed to enter the factory!"
Everyone burst into laughter. Xu Zhili quickly explained, "Master Liu, it's requesting a scan of your bicycle."
"Scan away, scan away, scan as much as you like," Mr. Liu waved generously.
The SmartGuard-1 scanner circled the bicycle and suddenly stopped at the seat: "An abnormal metal object has been detected. We recommend opening the box for inspection."
Zhang Jianjun went over to check and found a large adjustable wrench in the toolbox slung over the bicycle seat.
Master Liu slapped his forehead: "Oh dear! I've been looking for this big guy for days! Turns out I left it here!"
The Smart Guard-1 continued its report: "Large tool wrench, safety level: safe, but it is recommended not to place it in a location where it is easily lost."
Mr. Liu was "educated" by the robot, and pushed his cart into the factory with a mix of laughter and exasperation, which drew another burst of laughter.
Next up was Xiao Wang, a female staff member from the administrative department. She was carrying an exquisite gift box, and the Smart Guard-1 moved in front of her: "Gift box detected, requesting opening and inspection."
Xiao Wang hesitated, "This is a wedding gift for a colleague, and I went through a lot of trouble to wrap it up..."
The SmartGuard-1 insists: "Safety first, please open the box for inspection."
Xu Zhili stepped forward to help: "Smart Guard-1, activate surface scanning mode."
The robot emitted a special beam of light from its eyes and reported after a moment: "The contents are a set of ceramic cups. Safety level: safe. The packaging is exquisite. Handle with care."
Xiao Wang breathed a sigh of relief and carefully carried the gift into the factory.
Mr. Li, a cook in the cafeteria, pushed a cart of vegetables in. After a full scan, the Smart Guard-1 stopped in front of a basket of radishes: "Abnormal organic matter was detected. Further investigation is recommended."
Master Li looked puzzled: "This is just a regular radish!"
Zhang Jianjun stepped forward to rummage through the pile of radishes and, sure enough, found a metal lunchbox: "Old Li, what's going on with this now?"
Master Li was both amused and exasperated: "It must have been those kids who hid it! They were afraid their lunchboxes would be stolen, so they stuffed all sorts of things inside!"
The SmartGuard-1 added: "Metal lunch box, safety level: safe, but it is not recommended to store it with food to avoid cross-contamination."
The crowd burst into laughter, with someone joking, "This robot even knows about hygiene!"
By the end of the morning, the Smart Guard-1 had discovered a variety of "contraband": a small wine jug hidden inside by an old craftsman, "to warm himself up when it's cold"; metal knitting needles used by female workers to "pass the time during breaks"; and even a horseshoe nailed to the sole of someone's shoe, "found and thought it was fun"...
Although it turned out to be a false alarm, the accurate identification and occasional "suggestions" from the SmartGuard-1 surprised and amused everyone.
During lunch break, people gathered around the robot, chattering amongst themselves:
"This robot is sentient! It even found the candy I hid in my sleeve and it's with you!"
"It also told me that excessive sugar intake is bad for my health!"
"Our factory's technology is advancing by leaps and bounds!"
