Chapter 1 Awakening

"Xia Zhaodi! You good-for-nothing hen, lazy woman! Look at the time! Aren't you up and cooking?! I've never seen such a lazy and gluttonous woman in my life!"

The door was pounded on so loudly that it woke Xia Baozhu from her sleep.

She opened her eyes with a frown, but closed them tightly again before she could even see her surroundings clearly.

A searing pain surged through her brain, followed by a nameless sadness that quickly spread throughout her body, causing her to burst into tears that soaked her face and hair.

Why does my whole body feel like it's been run over, sore and aching all over?

Also, why was she crying?

Loud banging on the door, mixed with the vicious curses of middle-aged and elderly women, was heard incessantly.

Xia Baozhu's first thought was that she had been kidnapped.

Immediately afterwards, a memory that did not belong to her surged into her mind along with the pain, causing her to clutch her head tightly with both hands.

She let out painful groans, unable to hear even the sounds outside the door.

She transmigrated into the body of a pitiful woman named Xia Zhaodi.

Xia Zhaodi was born in 1966 and is currently 24 years old. Her ancestral home is Pozhen Village, Gangou Town, Nanping County, Taicheng City, Xiqing Province.

She has a primary school education level of third grade and has one younger sister and one younger brother.

She married Leng Minghui, a steelworker who was four years her senior, when she was 20 years old.

Xia Zhaodi, a country girl, was able to marry Leng Minghui for two reasons: one was that the Leng family was poor and city girls looked down on Leng Minghui; the other was that Xia Zhaodi was outstandingly beautiful.

The Leng family was poor because there were many people but few who could do the work.

After Leng Minghui's father passed away, Leng Minghui took over the job at the steel factory. He earned a meager apprenticeship salary of just over twenty yuan a month to support his unemployed mother, two younger sisters, and a younger brother. Life was very difficult.

Even though Leng Minghui is quite good-looking, none of the employees' children who know about his family situation would choose him.

Therefore, they could only find suitable girls from the countryside. Xia Zhaodi, who was good-looking, came into Leng Minghui's discerning eye through a matchmaker's introduction.

In the mid-1980s, the requirements for marriage were not low, considering the wages at the time.

Although Xia Zhaodi was a country girl, her family's dowry of three hundred yuan was also a worry for the Leng family.

The Leng family scraped together money from various sources and incurred considerable debt before they were able to marry Xia Zhaodi.

Therefore, Xia Zhaodi incurred the dissatisfaction of all the Leng family members as soon as she entered the family, and the issue of the bride price became one of the Leng family members' tools to attack and suppress her.

Because of his debts, Leng Minghui disliked the low wages at the steel mill, so he transferred his job to his younger brother and went south with his friends to seek his fortune.

With his departure, Xia Zhaodi, who already had a low status in the family, was even more bossed around by the Leng family, busy from morning till night, and would be scolded and cursed whenever she didn't have any work to do.

In the years since she got married, she has been busy with the weddings of the two Leng sisters and the wedding and childbirth of the second Leng brother, and she has never had a moment to rest.

If it were just the Leng family treating her badly, that would be one thing.

Xia Zhaodi was a beautiful woman, a well-known beauty in their neighborhood, and was initially very much liked by Leng Minghui.

The two enjoyed a sweet and loving time together for the first three months after their marriage.

This period was also one of the driving forces that kept Xia Zhaodi going.

But the Leng family's suppression was everywhere, from the initial humiliation on the second day of the wedding to their usual verbal attacks. They looked down on Xia Zhaodi's rural background and constantly complained that she was a freeloader.

This made Xia Zhaodi, who was already self-conscious about her rural background and limited experience, increasingly quiet and withdrawn.

She told Leng Minghui these unpleasant things, but Leng Minghui would always coax her and tell her to bear with it, using the old saying that an elder sister-in-law is like a mother to make her be magnanimous.

She endured and yielded, but what she got in return was even more unscrupulous bullying and ridicule from the Leng family.

As Leng Minghui went out and earned more and more, his horizons broadened, and his disdain for Xia Zhaodi became blatantly obvious.

He thought she was like a block of wood, lacking in charm, culture, and thought, and they couldn't even share a common language.

No matter how beautiful such a woman is, to Leng Minghui she is like a lifeless portrait of a beauty, not even as alluring as a portrait of a beauty with a vivid expression.

Except when necessary, Leng Minghui basically treated Xia Zhaodi as a silent tool when they met.

Xia Zhaodi had unspeakable suffering, and since she had never had a child, there were all sorts of rumors circulating around her.

Even when she went back to her parents' home for the Lunar New Year, her parents disliked her, telling her to wait until she gave birth before going back.

Her once strong body gradually weakened due to overwork and long-term depression.

Yesterday, an autumn rain fell. She was soaked in the rain while collecting clothes, digging ditches, and picking vegetables. In the evening, she developed a high fever and passed away so easily.

Recalling this, Xia Baozhu rubbed her forehead, a bitter smile barely managing to tug at the corners of her pale mouth. Who had she offended to have to suffer in 1990?

As a leisurely florist, Xia Baozhu comes from a well-off family and opened a flower shop as a way to pass the time.

Her hobbies include martial arts, gardening, watching TV series, and reading. She also takes two months off each year to travel, and her life is very fulfilling.

How did I end up in a completely different world after waking up?

Is it because Heaven couldn't bear to see her being too carefree, so it specially brought her here?

Where did the original Xia Zhaodi go? Could she have ended up in her body?

That's possible, after all, it's just a fever.

My head was still throbbing, and the knocking outside was getting more and more intense, as if I were possessed by a ghost.

Xia Baozhu remained unmoved; her head still ached. She recognized the cursing voice as belonging to Xia Zhaodi's mother-in-law, Wang Aixiang.

Xia Baozhu gently rubbed her temples with her index finger.

Suddenly, Xia Baozhu felt that the name Leng Minghui sounded familiar.

Isn't that the name of the male protagonist in a period novel she was reading called "The Richest Man's Little Wife in the 1990s"?
