Chapter 9: The Beginning - Working as a Babysitter

Early in the morning, after having breakfast, Xia Baozhu rode her bicycle to the woods in the suburbs for morning exercise and brought back some tree branches.

When I rode to the Leng family's door, I saw Li Xiujuan talking to a woman with a scholarly air.

Xia Baozhu recognized her; she looked somewhat like the girl in the photo that Aunt Song had shown her. She instinctively felt that this person was looking for her.

"Hello, are you Lu Pingping?" Xia Baozhu stopped her bicycle and asked directly.

“Yes.” Lu Pingping looked Xia Baozhu up and down. She was dressed simply and had a slender and upright figure.

Although her face was covered by a silk scarf, you could tell she must be very beautiful just by looking at her bright, expressive, and beautiful peach blossom eyes.

Just like her mother said.

When Li Xiujuan saw Xia Baozhu return, she went straight back to the courtyard without saying hello.

Seeing that they weren't interacting, Lu Pingping knew that Xia Baozhu must not be treated well at home.

"I didn't expect you to recognize me. Thank you so much for what happened to my mother."

Xia Baozhu invited Lu Pingping into the house to chat.

It turns out that on the day she was robbed, Aunt Song called her son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and son-in-law back home.

Aunt Song praised Xia Baozhu for knocking out the robber with a stone, saying that it wasn't enough to just thank her verbally, she told them to keep an eye out for suitable jobs.

Lu Pingping came today to introduce a job to Xia Baozhu.

Just now, when Li Xiujuan saw her, she asked her all sorts of questions but wouldn't say where Xia Zhaodi was, which made her a little unhappy and she felt that this person's character wasn't very good.

Fortunately, Xia Zhaodi was quite clever and recognized her at a glance, which shows that Xia Zhaodi is observant and has a good memory.

This gave Lu Pingping a very good impression of Xia Baozhu from the very beginning.

Lu Pingping works at the local teachers' college. In the school's staff quarters, there is a retired professor who has broken his leg and has difficulty moving around.

My family took care of her for a few days, but they all have jobs and can't keep taking time off, so I'm thinking of hiring a short-term caregiver until her leg is better, which will be about three months.

Lu Pingping immediately thought of Xia Baozhu, asked for her mother's address, and came over.

nanny? !

Did she start her career as a nanny?

Xia Baozhu's first reaction was to refuse.

She recalled that on the first day she woke up, the first job posting she saw at the labor market was for a nanny, but she was just looking around out of curiosity.

Unexpectedly, the first job she was introduced to after arriving here was as a nanny.

Xia Baozhu didn't answer immediately; she thought for a while.

She quickly thought of an advantage of being a nanny: working for a retired university professor meant she could claim that the professor had kindly taught her the foreign language and piano she knew.

Unfortunately, the original owner of this body had a very low level of education and didn't know many things.

If she wants to reveal these skills in the future, she at least needs to have a source for them.

Thinking of this, Xia Baozhu's resistance lessened.

So what if she starts off low? She'll first let go of her past, accept the present, and then try to break through. She'll see how well she can do and how far she can go.

"Sister Lu, I'd like to ask, is this professor male or female?"

Although Xia Baozhu accepted being a nanny, she had a condition: the nanny could not be a man.

"She is a female professor who taught music and traditional Chinese studies at the university before she retired. Her husband has passed away."

Lu Pingping had already considered the gender factor; the name Xia Zhaodi sounded like something out of feudal superstition.

Judging from that woman's fashionable attire and the contrast with Xia Zhaodi's simple style, it's clear that Xia Zhaodi doesn't hold a high position in her husband's family.

Nowadays, most families use honeycomb briquettes, and some use gas stoves. Xia Zhaodi even went to collect firewood early in the morning. Judging from their family's fact that they are not poor, it's obvious that they are deliberately bullying them.

Lu Pingping felt that Xia Zhaodi's willingness to go out and find a job under such a repressive environment was a sign of progress in her thinking, and she would help her if she could.

If the host family were men, Xia Zhaodi's in-laws would definitely not agree, and she wouldn't introduce them.

Xia Baozhu and Lu Pingping rode their bicycles to the Teachers' College.

With Lu Pingping's facial recognition, Xia Baozhu was able to enter university simply by filling out a form.

Returning to the university campus after so long, Xia Baozhu felt a sense of relief as she looked at the energetic college students.

After graduating from university, she rarely went to the school except to visit her uncle and aunt who taught there during the Chinese New Year.

I never expected that coming in now would bring such a different feeling and sensation.

The residential compound was bustling with activity as adults went to work and children went to school.

Going against the flow of people, Lu Pingping greeted the teachers and professors she knew from time to time, and led Xia Baozhu to a four-story old building with dark gray bricks.

The exterior of the building is covered by ivy on one side, which adds a vibrant touch of color to the old building.

Upon reaching the second floor, Lu Pingping knocked on the door of room 202.

At the same time, Xia Baozhu removed her scarf and mask.

A well-mannered man in his thirties, wearing a sweater, opened the door and smiled when he saw Lu Pingping.

"Teacher Lu, I didn't expect you to arrive so quickly. You've gone to so much trouble."

"You're too kind, Professor Qian. This is Xia Zhaodi, a relative of my mother's. Zhaodi, this is Professor Qian, Professor Deng's son."

Lu Pingping introduced the two to each other at the door.

"Hello, Teacher Qian."

Xia Baozhu greeted him with a smile, which surprised Teacher Qian, who was looking over.

This girl is so beautiful! Her face is bright yet has a cool and refreshing quality. She has a quiet temperament, graceful movements, and no shyness or coyness in her eyes. Instead, her eyes are peaceful and calm, with a clear and upright gaze. It's easy to overlook her clothes and appearance.

With looks and demeanor like that, she'd look good even wearing a burlap sack.

She seems more like a girl raised in a wealthy family. Is she capable of being a nanny?

Suppressing her doubts, Teacher Qian still greeted her warmly, "Hello Xia, please come in and sit down."
