Chapter 53 Lunch at the Steel Mill

"Come on, I'll take you to the workshop."

Bai Kaixuan spent the whole morning with Nanqiao shuttling between the workshops.

This was the first time that Nanqiao had personally integrated himself into the ranks of the workers of this era. The uniform work clothes and assembly line workshops, without any modern equipment, all required manual labor. The occasional loud conversations in the workshops made people seem much closer to each other.

Bai Kaixuan raised his hand and looked at his watch. "Nanqiao girl, let's go to the cafeteria. I think my uncle should be there too."

"Okay, let's go. I think I have almost understood the items on this list." Nanqiao looked at the time and said while flipping through the documents in his hand.

"Sister, you really put in a lot of effort. You must have contributed to our foreign exchange this time." Bai Kaixuan looked at the densely packed information in Nanqiao's hand and was also very moved.

"I have accepted this job and I have to do it well. I can't let you down." Nanqiao put away the information and said seriously.

"Okay, I'm not as conscious as you, hahaha, let's eat first, and we'll talk after we finish eating," Bai Kaixuan said as he pulled Nanqiao towards the cafeteria.

It was just after get off work, and there were already a few scattered employees walking towards the cafeteria in groups of two or three, talking and laughing.

When Nanqiao and Bai Kaixuan arrived at the cafeteria, Director Bai was already sitting at a table for four, reading a newspaper, waiting for them.

"Uncle, we are here"

"Uncle Bai"

Director Bai put down the newspaper after hearing the voice and said, "Hurry up and do it. I have asked the chef in the cafeteria to help get the food. It will be ready in a while."

Nanqiao nodded and sat down opposite Director Bai.

"Nan girl, how was your visit this morning?" Director Bai asked amiably.

"It went very smoothly and I benefited a lot. However, I don't know how to express some of the more professional terms. I will have to look them up when I get home this afternoon. I should also review the techniques from this morning and that should be enough."

"Don't worry, there are still two days left. We can take it slow. Half of the translators we borrowed from Qing City didn't understand anything, but we still made a lot of money. You will definitely bring us more foreign exchange this time. We will make them in Qing City envious." Director Bai showed off with joy in his eyes.

"Don't worry, I will do my best," Nanqiao assured Director Bai.

Director Bai waved his hand and said, "Just do your best. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Eat first, and we can talk about work after dinner."

The canteen chef brought three bowls of rice, four dishes and a soup.

"Come and try it. The workers in the factory also eat this. I asked him to serve a few portions to see how it tastes." Director Bai waited expectantly for Nanqiao to eat.

Nanqiao took a bite and tasted it. It was not as greasy as Bai Kaixuan said. "Well, it's delicious. The taste is indeed not inferior to that of state-owned restaurants."

Nanqiao said this under the expectant gaze of Director Bai, and Director Bai was immediately very satisfied. He said, "Who among the units in the surrounding area can compare with their factory in terms of treatment?"

"That's good, eat quickly."

Nanqiao nodded and had a very comfortable meal.

After dinner, Director Bai asked again, "Nan girl, what are your plans for the afternoon? Are you going to stay with your uncle or go back to the compound?"

"Let's go back to the compound. I have to go back and report to Minister Zheng."

"Okay then, come and play with me more often when you have time."

"Okay," Nanqiao replied

After dinner, Nanqiao stayed for a while, then said goodbye to Director Bai and Bai Kaixuan, and left. He took the bus back to the government compound along the same route.

When Nanqiao returned, Minister Zheng had gone home for dinner and had not come to work yet, so she went straight back to the independent office that Minister Zheng had prepared for her and began to look up some unfamiliar words she had encountered in the morning. Until she had sorted out all the words she didn't understand, she heard the movement outside the door.

He hurried out and saw Minister Zheng opening the door.

Minister Zheng also heard the door open, stopped unlocking it and looked at Nanqiao, "Oh, you're back. Did you get the information?"

"I got it. I'm reporting my work to you."

"Come on, come on, come in and talk." Minister Zheng opened the door of his office and asked Nanqiao to come in and sit down.

"I got the name list and purchase list from Director Bai this morning, and also went to the workshop to learn about the production process. I have just reviewed the information from this morning, so there should be no problem."

"You are very efficient. You can arrange your time by yourself in the next two days. If you can do it at home, you don't have to work here. It's up to you to decide."

"Okay, then I'll go read the manuscript at home tomorrow. I'll come over the day after tomorrow to see if there's anything else we can work on together."

"Sure. By the way, what happened to Zhou Hua from your village?" Minister Zheng asked.

"It was just determined yesterday. There was no real harm, so he can only be detained for three days for criticism and education, and then he will publicly apologize after he is released."

"Ah... I can't tell you. If there is any real damage, what's the point of dealing with it?" Old Zheng sighed and said

Nanqiao was also in a heavy mood. How many girls had their lives ruined or even lost because of some rumors spread by others?

That's because she's weak. It has nothing to do with me. I just said it casually. If she took it seriously and committed suicide, who can she blame?

"Forget it, it's annoying to talk about these things, but luckily you're in town now, so I don't have much chance to meet her anymore, so I don't have to bother you anymore." Minister Zheng naturally understood how hurtful these words were to a girl, so there was a bit of disgust in his tone, but he still tried to calm Nanqiao down.

"Yes, I know. Minister Zheng, I will go back to the office first. You can call me anytime if you need anything."
