Chapter 27 Thank you, Second Aunt

Isn’t it more fragrant to grow and pick it than to go out and find it?

Mrs. Liu didn't know what her daughter was thinking, so she believed what her daughter said.

"Go home!"

After taking one last look at the fields in the next village, he returned home with his two children.

"Mom, don't feel sorry. Look, these are herbs under your feet."

Lin Shiyu knew that her family's financial situation was not good, so recently when she had nothing to do, she observed the plants around her to see which ones were herbs that could be picked and sold for money.

Liu looked down at her feet. Apart from some recognizable wild vegetables, there were also what she thought were weeds. She really didn't know which ones were herbs.

“This is purslane.”

“This is three-pod grass.”

“This is corn-eye grass.”

“This is Amaranth.”

......

Lin Shiyu simply squatted down and pointed them out to her one by one.

There are no herbicides here, so the weeds grow very pleasantly, and the herbs that are mistaken for weeds also grow well.

Liu and Lin Boyu squatted down and looked at the plants she pointed at. They actually recognized most of them. They were wild vegetables that they often ate on their table.

As she listened, Liu suddenly felt relieved that she could not go to the ridges of the fields in the next village to pick Centella asiatica and coriander.

Although he didn't know whether these two wild vegetables were herbs or could be sold, he was certain that he could exchange them for money. He was so obsessed with it that he took his children out to pick them every day.

I really am obsessed with money.

"Okay, wait until your father goes to the county town to sell the herbs and the winnowing basket is empty, then we'll come back to pick them." Liu said to her, touching her head.

"Yeah." Lin Shiyu nodded vigorously.

She didn't pick multiple herbs at once because she didn't have any extra tools at home, whether for drying or storing them.

There's not even a place to store it.

The room they live in can't hold so many things, so they'll make plans after they move into their new home.

When the three of them returned to the house, Lin Anru was copying books seriously in front of the window.

He plans to go to the county town in a couple of days and is catching up on his progress.

In order not to disturb him, the three of them did not rest, but took the herbs to the yard to sort, wash and dry them.

"Oh! Third sister-in-law, your family spent so little money to buy the homestead, and you've already spent all your wealth? Have you already started digging wild vegetables to store?"

When Liu heard the word "Ouch!", she knew who was coming without even looking up.

She felt a little speechless.

The two of them had fought and quarreled with each other, but why did this person always act as if these things never happened and come up to say a few words whenever they met?

How shameless you are!

Don’t you know deep down that you are unpopular?

Liu didn't want to pay attention to her.

"Ah~ How could I forget!"

Liu ignored her, but Zhang got even more excited. She covered her mouth with her hands, opened her eyes wide and said innocently:

"I completely forgot. My third brother owes so much money that it will take him three to five years to pay it off. He really needs to dig wild vegetables to fill his stomach!"

Liu raised her head and said to her in a calm tone, "Yes, so Second Sister-in-law wants to lend us some money for our emergency?"

"We don't have any money. You know we have almost spent it on buying the land. Even if we want to help, we can't!" Zhang shook her head.

Liu rolled her eyes and said unhappily, "If you can't help, then stop making sarcastic remarks here."

"Hey, hey, hey, what do you mean by sarcastic remarks? You're being taken for granted." Zhang feigned anger at first, then changed the subject: "If I didn't pity your two children, I wouldn't have said anything."

Liu was puzzled: "Pathetic?"

She wasn't sure if her child was pitiful, but she was sure that the child of the man in front of her was truly pitiful.

Zhang didn't respond directly, but instead asked another question: "I just passed by your window and saw my third brother studying. Are you still planning to take the imperial examination?"

Liu lowered her head and continued to pick herbs without answering her.

Zhang didn't care whether Liu replied or not, she just wanted to say what she wanted to say.

"He took the exam once and he already owed half the village money. If he takes it again, you guys won't be able to pay it back even if you work like slaves for the rest of your lives."

Having said this, she paused and observed Liu's expression, but Liu lowered her head and she could not see anything.

It didn't matter that she couldn't see. Undeterred, she continued, "We adults are fine. We can just endure the hard times. But are you willing to let your son and daughter suffer with them? They're so tiny, and they're spending their back half chewing wild vegetables. Don't you think that's pitiful?"

"Poor, pitiful, very pitiful!" Liu said it three times in a row, then grabbed Zhang's hands with both hands, and said with tears in her eyes: "So as their aunt, second sister-in-law, you will help them, right?"

"I can't help you, I can't help you. I just said that we don't have any spare money." Zhang got goosebumps when she grabbed her hand and tried desperately to pull it out.

"Hey! Talking about money hurts our feelings. We all lack money. You want to give it to us but we don't dare to ask for it. If I take it, your whole family will have to eat coarse food. I'm not that kind of person."

Liu concentrated all her strength in her hands, holding her hands tightly.

If she doesn't make this woman pay a price today, she won't be named Liu anymore.

Zhang struggled and followed her words and asked, "Then what do you want?"

Liu: "Don't worry, it's not something valuable. You must have it."

"What?"

She continued to struggle, and Liu let go of her hand.

Liu struggled with too much force and let go too quickly. She staggered back a few steps before she could stand firm, and she sprained her ankle.

The pain from her ankle twisted her facial expression.

Seeing her in pain, Liu was secretly pleased, but she pretended not to notice. Not only that, she reached out and pulled her back to her original position and continued speaking:

"Second sister-in-law, you don't have to run so far. We don't want more, just one third will be enough."

"Um... um, let me go first."

Zhang was now only interested in looking at her own feet, and her mind was not on Liu at all. She didn't know what Liu said, so she could only nod randomly, asking Liu to let her go quickly.

"That's great. Thank you so much, second sister-in-law." Liu excitedly grabbed her hand and shook it, refusing to let go.

Zhang was dizzy from being shaken by her, so she didn't hear clearly what Liu said to the two children.

After Liu let go, she came back to her senses and found two little men standing in front of her.

The two little people weren't important; what was important was that they were dragging heavy baskets, tied with familiar ropes and methods...

"Come here quickly to thank your second aunt. She generously gave these out for you to eat." Liu said to the two children with a smile.

Lin Shiyu: "Thank you, Second Auntie!"

Lin Boyu: "Thank you, Second Auntie!"
