There was a row of simple houses on the west side of the farm, where the people who had been knocked down lived. Chen Gang and his family of three occupied one of the houses.
When Chen Gang first came to this farm, although he was demoted, he still had a position as a farm manager, so his life was not difficult.
Once the movement started, he was quickly defeated.
He was removed from his position as farm manager and labeled a counter-revolutionary. The three of them then moved into a dilapidated house on the west side of the farm.
During this process, both Chen Gang and Wen Xueman suffered a lot, especially Chen Gang. He always stood in front of his wife and daughter to protect them, so many violent shocks fell on him and he suffered many diseases.
Chen Gang is now in his fifties, with most of his hair gone gray and his body hunched over like a man in his seventies.
Wen Xueman was not much better either. The changes in her life had made her no longer as glamorous as before. Her once held high head now drooped like a broken flower stem.
The only one who was optimistic was Chen Qingyin.
She grew into a graceful young lady. Although she dressed simply, she was full of energy and her back was not bent.
However, having grown up in a difficult environment after all, Chen Qingyin, like many children from poor families, was very sensible. She often helped her parents with work and cooked for them, and calluses formed on the palms of her hands.
When Chen Gang and Wen Xueman came back from work, Chen Qingyin had already prepared two dishes and a soup. They were all lush green vegetables, without any oil, except for a few drops of oil floating in the soup.
Two bowls of sorghum rice were placed in front of Chen Gang and Wen Xueman, and the couple's tired bodies finally regained some energy.
"Dad, Mom, look, this is what they gave me when I was teaching them to do their homework." Chen Qingyin took out a bag of peanuts and put it on the table.
"It's a pity there's no wine. I remember that Dad used to love drinking."
Chen Gang smiled, "Silly girl, Dad has quit drinking a long time ago."
Wen Xueman asked: "Who are you teaching to do homework? Don't do this next time. You will be criticized if Administrator Wang sees you."
Here, there are administrators who are specifically looking after them, and their every word and action in daily life is under surveillance.
However, the administrators have different personalities. Some are gentle and generally turn a blind eye to harmless things, while others are strict and will make a big deal out of the slightest thing.
Shi Xiaojun often sent food to Chen Qingyin. If other people saw it, it would be fine. But if Administrator Wang saw it, not only would the food be confiscated, but he would also be criticized.
"I understand, Mom. I will pay attention." Chen Qingyin comforted her mother but did not say that she would not do such a thing again.
Being seen by Administrator Wang is a matter of probability. She can't give up the opportunity to get more food because of this probability.
"Alas..." Wen Xueman seemed to have thought of something, and her eyes were filled with deep sadness.
"Mom, what's wrong?" Chen Qingyin said with a smile.
"It's all my fault..." Wen Xueman choked up, "It was me who got you into trouble. You should have divorced me and drawn a clear line..."
Chen Gang frowned when he heard this and said, "Look at you, here you go again. I'm so tired of hearing these words."
Wen Xueman: "Divorce me and let our daughter live with you. At least she can have a visible future."
Chen Gang remained silent.
Yes, it doesn't matter how they do it, but their daughter is in the prime of her life, but she is trapped in this farm and is wasting her time.
At this point Chen Gang couldn't say whether he regretted it or not, he just felt sorry for his daughter.
Chen Qingyin and Shi Xiaoshan graduated from high school at the same time. Shi Xiaoshan's family arranged for her to join the army, but Chen Qingyin could only stay on the farm and work with no future.
