Chapter 5: The Escape Begins

It was agreed that six people would form a group to keep watch, and the others would rest.

The night passed peacefully, and in the morning the village chief rang the gong to wake everyone up.

Qi Yanxuan opened his eyes and looked around. The other teams also stood up one after another, packed up their things and set off.

Everyone carried their packages on their backs and pulled carts to start a new journey.

Three days later.

A group of people finally walked out of the plain and looked at the riverbed that was once a big river, but now only a stream remained.

Everyone licked their cracked lips in ecstasy.

The village chief turned around and organized the young and middle-aged men in the village to fetch water together.

Qi Yanxuan said to Shen Yanqing who was pushing the cart beside him: "Give me your and uncle's water bags, I'll go get some water."

"I'll go with you. Just let my dad watch the things." As he said that, Shen Yanqing put down the cart, took the axe from his waist, held it in his hand, and followed Qi Yanxuan to the riverbed.

Everyone took their axes and walked towards the river together.

The riverside was crowded with people, pushing and shoving each other, fighting for water, and many people were pushed and trampled and couldn't get up.

Chen Yanqing protected Qi Yanxuan and approached the crowd. When everyone saw the group of people coming with weapons in their hands, they felt a little scared and scattered to both sides.

After getting water, everyone returned to the camp and continued on their journey.

"We'll reach Yuncheng in another afternoon." Shen Kui said to the village chief.

"Then let's speed up, rest in Yuncheng for one night before we continue, and replenish some dry food tomorrow." The village chief said to everyone with a happy look on his face.

Everyone was delighted when they heard this. They were so tired from walking all the way that their shoes were worn out. The elderly and children were better off as they could sit in the cart when they were tired.

But the young man walked hard and got blisters on the soles of his feet. Now he is about to reach the next city, so at least he can buy some ointment, otherwise the soles of his feet will be burning with pain, which is really uncomfortable.

Everyone saw a city standing in the distance ahead, with soldiers guarding the city on the city walls.

On both sides of the open city gate stood gatekeepers checking household registration.

The crowd lined up to enter the city.
