A barbarian country, a small border town.
The air was filled with a smell that was a mixture of herbs and dust.
Xuan Qi leaned against the entrance of a dark alley, a semi-transparent card between his slender fingers.
The card depicts a closed eye.
She was wearing a dark gray robe with the hood pulled low, covering most of her face except for her sharply defined chin.
Outside the alley, there was a numb crowd.
Everyone's eyes were empty yet devout, and they were chanting incantations, praising the greatness of the God of Healing.
A healer, dressed in a white robe and wearing a silver mask, stood on a high platform, his voice possessing a seductive power.
"Remember, it was the God of Healing who gave you new life! Forget about that false god who occupies the desolate mountains!"
"That false god is the source of all evil and a sign of the end times! His followers are all blinded lambs!"
The card at Xuan Qi's fingertip glowed slightly.
On the street corner, a man whose memories had just been "purified" showed a hint of struggle in his eyes.
He stared blankly at his hands, as if he had remembered something.
Xuan Qi's eyes narrowed, and the card flew out silently, sticking to the back of the man's neck before disappearing.
The man's body stiffened, the struggle in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by fervor once more.
"Xuanqi, concentrate."
A cold voice sounded behind her.
Another white-robed messenger appeared behind her at some point, his silver mask gleaming coldly in the shadows.
“These mortals have weak wills, and the roots of their memories can easily regrow.”
"The mountain god is the greatest cancer in this world, and we don't have much time left. We must give all faith to the great god of healing before he completely corrupts this world."
The messenger warned.
"Otherwise, everyone will die."
Xuan Qi lowered his head, a barely perceptible sneer curling at the corner of his mouth beneath his hood.
here we go again.
It's the same old excuse again.
These messengers repeat the same words every day.
It's as if that mountain goddess will come out tomorrow and chop everyone to death with a knife.
However, Xuanqi had personally met several foreign merchants a few days ago.
They claim to be followers of the mountain god.
They didn't force anyone to change their faith; they simply set up stalls in the city, trading potatoes for local specialties.
A child fainted from hunger by the roadside. They didn't recite any scriptures, but silently handed him a piping hot roasted potato.
That pure goodwill, devoid of any ulterior motive, was a thousand times more genuine than the seductive words of the messenger on the high platform.
Is the Mountain God really an evil god?
Xuan Qi retrieved the card and turned to face the white-robed envoy behind him.
"My lord, the barbarian kingdom has been shrouded in the glory of the God of Medicine, and my abilities are no longer of any use here."
Her voice carried just the right amount of respect.
"I request permission to travel to another country, to the Liang Kingdom, or the Yan Kingdom, to sow the seeds of faith for the great God of Medicine!"
The white-robed envoy's gaze, hidden behind his mask, scrutinized her.
The Xuan Qi before me comes from a world called Cards, and he is a master of mind-controlling cards.
He was one of the most useful tools among all the time travelers they had gathered.
"Alright."
The envoy pondered for a moment, then nodded.
He thought of the setbacks the medical envoy had suffered in two other countries a few days ago.
"In the capital of Liang, our envoys were driven out by the Imperial Guards, and the Empress of Yan was even more barbaric, daring to humiliate the servant of the God of Medicine."
"Go and scout ahead. Remember, don't reveal yourself; focus on observation."
"Yes, ma'am."
Xuan Qi was overjoyed, but remained outwardly calm. He respectfully bowed, turned, and disappeared into the darkness.
…
Half a month later, at the border of the Yan Kingdom.
Xuan Qi, dressed as a merchant, led a thin horse and fell into a long silence as he looked at the scene before him.
She slowly took off her goggles, wiped them, and put them back on.
The scene before me remained unchanged.
What happened to the promised hell and suffering?
The weather was indeed as hot as a steamer, and even the roadside weeds were wilting.
There were indeed locusts on the ridges of the fields.
Densely packed, covering the sky and the earth.
But the people in the fields, far from panicking, instead carried small stools, cracked melon seeds, and looked at the sky with great joy.
"They're here! They're here!"
Someone shouted.
In the distance, a colorful auspicious cloud flew in from the horizon.
Above the clouds stood a large, one-legged bird with magnificent plumage.
Shang Yang!
Xuan Qi's pupils contracted slightly. This was a strange beast she had seen in the information given to her by the God of Medicine. It was said to be able to summon wind and rain.
The ram let out a loud song, and its clear chirping echoed through the sky.
Immediately afterwards, a torrential downpour began.
The locusts, their wings soaked by the heavy rain, fluttered and fell to the ground.
Before they could even recover...
"Charge!"
With a shout, a group of strange beasts that looked like pigs but had protruding tusks rushed out of the village, huffing and puffing.
Dang Kang! The auspicious beast of God's harvest!
They plunged into the field and, facing the locusts covering the ground, opened their mouths wide and began to devour them.
It's crunchy and delicious, like eating some kind of heavenly delicacy.
Seeing Xuanqi's blank expression, a villager kindly came over and handed her a handful of fried beans.
"Girl, are you from out of town? Don't be afraid, this is an auspicious beast bestowed by the Mountain Goddess, specially to help us deal with the locust plague."
"That Kang has a very good appetite. He can eat locusts from several acres of land a day, and his droppings are excellent fertilizer!"
