Wasn't the Goddess of Fertility the only person in that little house?
Liu Xin stared blankly at the dark little house, frozen in place.
Granny Shi had already walked in shakily, and a glimmer of light gradually appeared in her cloudy, dark eyes.
Like fireflies gradually igniting in the darkness, carrying their faint light, they slowly make their way into an even darker world.
Outside the courtyard, several constables had already managed to climb in. They received a signal from Magistrate Chen and Luo Yong and quickly stood behind the two men.
Not long after, Granny Shi walked out carrying a figure, her gaze gentle.
Upon closer inspection, everyone realized that the woman in the old man's arms was no longer human; her face and the back of her hands were rotting. The woman was still tightly holding the skeletons of three children, refusing to let go even in death.
With a loud bang, the tile that Liu Xin was holding as a weapon fell to the ground.
"Xinxin, thank you for remembering Susu. She would be happy if she knew that someone still cares about her."
"She mentioned you before she got married."
"The government officials have come too. May I beg for a favor and be allowed to bury the remains of my daughters and granddaughters?"
Granny Shi slowly raised her head, her eyes filled with pleading.
County Magistrate Chen nodded.
After reading it, the old man's aged eyes closed slightly.
Normally, he would need a cane and a hunched back to walk steadily, but the old man did not tremble at all while holding his daughter in his arms.
Although she walked slowly, she was incredibly determined, and even the skeleton in her daughter's arms barely trembled.
Grandma Shi took out a key and carefully opened the iron gate to the backyard.
After the iron gate was pushed open, everyone could see the small hills outside, as well as pits of various sizes.
This house was already somewhat remote, with a small grove of trees and a deep ditch in the backyard. The terrain wasn't very flat, so no one would choose to live here.
That's why the old lady was able to dig so many pits here, and no one has discovered them to this day.
The old woman picked up her daughter and slowly walked to the side of the largest pit.
Inside was a wooden coffin. The old man placed his daughter and three granddaughters inside, and after closing the coffin, his gaze softened even more.
“Some of these pits are new, some are old; they must have been dug out intermittently,” Luo Yong analyzed, examining the pits.
"Grandma Shi, let us help you carry it." He offered to help when he saw the old woman struggling to pull the other wooden coffins.
The old man nodded, pointed to the pit next to him, and then to the wooden coffins in the yard.
Everyone understood immediately; it turned out that the old woman had planned out the design of the wooden coffins for those boxes in the yard long ago!
Magistrate Chen waved his hand, and the newly arrived constables all lifted the wooden coffin in the courtyard.
"Your Excellency, if we bury all these wooden coffins, how will we investigate the case and find their families?" Luo Yong also felt that these people should be buried, but wouldn't the government have no clues?
If they can't find these people's families, how can they explain it to them?
"You brute! This was left behind by evil spirits. Not even the emperor would dare to touch it, let alone our small county town!"
"And do you think these women came voluntarily? Weren't they sent by their families? Even if we find them, so what?"
Then send the women's bodies back, have those guys wrap them in a tattered straw mat, and throw them out?
Those guys might not even be willing to provide a straw mat!
Magistrate Chen was disappointed in his son's lack of ambition.
"Say less, let's bury them first!"
Luo Yong fell silent. He took the initiative to carry the wooden coffins and put them into the pit.
In the courtyard, Granny Shi approached the little monsters with bluish-black skin.
The Goddess of Fertility had disappeared, and these little monsters didn't last long either, turning into black powder one by one.
Granny Shi sorted the powders and put them into small boxes, labeling each one.
"Grandma Shi, can you recognize whose children these are?" Wang Qing, holding a long whip, walked over and asked curiously.
During her previous battles, she felt that these little monsters all looked exactly the same. Could anyone really tell them apart?
The old man nodded and placed the small boxes into their respective wooden coffins.
"Thank you for your hard work," she said softly.
Those people sped up and soon lowered all the wooden coffins down.
When the last wooden coffin was lowered, the old man finally smiled, but he could no longer hold on and collapsed to the ground.
All that she did was because the old woman held on to her last breath. Now that everything was done, her dimly lit eyes were like a candle about to burn out.
At this moment, Granny Shi was like a stiff tree root, struggling to raise her head and speaking in a hoarse voice.
"Ask whatever you want."
"Grandma, is that evil spirit completely gone?" Magistrate Chen asked cautiously.
Granny Shi glanced at him and said decisively, "The children she could control have all turned to dust and have no power left."
"and……"
She sighed and slowly recounted the origin of this evil spirit.
The old woman came from Shicun, which is quite far from Huangxian. She had loved listening to all sorts of stories since she was a child and knew about demons and monsters.
Later, she found traces of evil spirits in the village's ancestral hall and repeatedly reported them to the village head and also to her relatives and parents.
But every time the villagers heard this, they would show disgust and instead scold her.
