But when her gaze fell on the two children's pale faces and the old man's scarred face, her eyes softened.
"Alas, no matter how muddled those in power may be, we ordinary people are innocent."
Grandma Wang sighed, then a warm smile appeared on her face.
"The kids look starving. I'll go get them something good to eat. We're not short of meat in this barren mountain!"
As she spoke, she turned around and went into the simple but clean kitchen, where soon the sizzling sound of stir-frying and the aroma of meat filled the air.
Wang Chong then led the old man and the two children into the house.
"Brother, take the kids and rest here for a bit."
He pointed to a corner of the room where there were a few relatively clean beds.
"My home is small, so please make yourselves cramped."
The old man from the divine kingdom quickly waved his hand, his voice choked with emotion: "I'm not wronged, I'm not wronged! Having a roof over my head is already an immense favor!"
He looked around the room; although it wasn't large, it was very well organized.
Half a bag of snow-white polished rice was piled up in the corner, and next to it was a small bag of flour.
The hoes and sickles standing against the wall had blades that gleamed coldly; they were clearly brand new and in good condition.
The old man was secretly astonished; this ordinary worker's family was actually living better than the wealthy families they had seen before!
Seeing their restraint, Wang Chong wanted to put them at ease, so he pointed to a tap next to a water vat in the corner and said, "Brother, are you thirsty? We have clean water here, I'll boil some for you."
As he spoke, he turned on the tap.
A stream of clear water gushed out, splashing up tiny droplets.
The old man and the two children stared wide-eyed, as if they had witnessed some incredible miracle!
"This is..." The old man pointed to the faucet, his lips trembling, unable to utter a complete sentence.
He had lived most of his life and had only ever seen people painstakingly carrying water from wells and rivers.
I've never seen water flow out of such an ingenious pipe by itself.
The two children were even more curious, and the slightly older boy couldn't resist reaching out his little hand to catch the water.
The icy touch made him gasp in surprise, then he chuckled.
"They just came out like that?" The old man still couldn't believe it.
Wang Chong smiled憨厚ly, with a hint of barely perceptible pride: "Yes, thanks to the blessing of the Mountain Goddess, every household in our desolate mountain will soon have access to tap water, and we won't have to fetch water from the foot of the mountain anymore!"
The old man looked at the clear water, then at the rice, flour, and brand-new farm tools inside the house, his heart filled with turmoil.
So this is what life is like for ordinary workers in barren mountains?
Not only can you eat meat, but you can also eat refined white flour and rice, and even water is so readily available!
Compared to this place, the divine kingdom is worlds apart!
