The air inside the carriage seemed to freeze.
The mother and her sister-in-law clung to each other tightly, their faces ashen.
Even the strong and powerful coachman was gripping the reins, the veins on the back of his hands bulging.
"Quiet down!"
A clear, cold shout drowned out all the cries and screams.
Yu Luo showed no fear on her face, her eyes as calm as a deep pool.
She turned to the pale-faced coachman, her voice steady and powerful.
“Angkor, turn your horse around right now and leave with my grandmother and mother.”
The coachman shuddered and stared at her as if she were a madwoman.
"Little, little scholar, that's a demon! We can't escape!"
"An'er!"
Grandmother shouted sharply, grabbing Yu Luo's wrist and squeezing so hard that her withered fingers turned white.
"We'll go together, we'll die together! How could your grandmother leave you here alone!"
The mother rushed over, shaking her head and crying.
"No! Absolutely not! My son, I can't live without you!"
Her two nieces clung tightly to her legs, crying uncontrollably.
Yu Luo looked at them, her heart warmed, but her expression became even more resolute.
She took her grandmother's hand in return and pulled out a roughly carved wooden sculpture, no bigger than the palm of her hand, from her bosom.
The wood carving vaguely resembles the shape of a woman.
"Grandmother, Mother, look what this is!"
"This is a divine object bestowed by the Mountain Goddess!"
"Mountain Goddess?"
Grandmother and mother were both stunned.
Yu Luo's voice carried a convincing power.
"That's right! Just now, the Mountain Goddess spoke in my mind!"
"She said that the evil spirit was after me, and that as long as I stayed, you could leave safely!"
"The Mountain Goddess also said that she would send someone to rescue me soon! This wooden carving can protect me!"
This was half true and half false, but the words "Mountain Goddess" seemed to possess a strange magic, instantly giving the panicked family a sense of security.
Grandmother stared intently at the wooden carving, then looked at her granddaughter's resolute face. After struggling for a long time, she finally gritted her teeth.
"good!"
She pushed her still crying mother and sister-in-law back to their seats.
"We'll listen to An'er! We can't stay and cause trouble!"
"Quick! Let's go!"
The coachman looked at Yu Luo with suspicion, then at the giant wolf whose patience was wearing thin and which was starting to paw at the ground impatiently. In the end, the instinct for survival overcame his fear.
He gritted his teeth and pulled the reins with all his might, urging the terrified horse to stand up again, turn around, and gallop towards the fork in the road!
…
Behind the bushes not far away, several masked thugs were craning their necks to watch the show.
"Hehe, you're doomed now!"
The short thug rubbed his hands together excitedly.
"Those wolf demons eat them one by one, we can just go over and collect the silver later!"
The bald leader spat, his face full of smugness.
"That's right! This is what happens when you dare to go against Manager Wang!"
However, a timid thug tugged at his sleeve, his voice trembling.
"Big brother, something's not right."
"Look, why is that family's carriage moving?"
"Why is that Scholar Yu still stuck in the same place? What's he up to?"
Upon hearing this, the bald leader narrowed his eyes and then chuckled.
"What can they do? They're just scared out of their wits!"
"Can a bookworm who's gone stupid really turn the world upside down?"
He patted his chest and said nonchalantly.
"We've done this kind of thing—using someone else to do our dirty work—many times! That wolf demon is very clever; it eats the meat, we get the money—it kills two birds with one stone! Just wait and see what happens!"
…
Yu Luo stood quietly, listening to the sound of the carriage behind her gradually fade into the distance until it disappeared.
She knew her family was safe.
Before her, the giant gray wolf, seeing most of its prey flee and only the smallest one remaining, flashed a furious rage at being mocked in its single eye.
It stopped pacing and instead lowered its body, letting out a threatening growl from its throat.
Just then, it saw a scene that baffled even the wolf itself.
Instead of running away, the tiny human slowly walked towards it step by step.
Not only the giant wolf, but even the thugs watching the show in the bushes looked as if they had been choked, their eyes wide open and their jaws almost dropping to the ground.
This is insane!
This scholar is absolutely insane!
As the carriage disappeared completely at the end of the mountain road, Yu Luo's tense nerves finally relaxed.
She raised her head, looked directly at the giant wolf, and a faint smile appeared on her lips.
"You, are you the evil spirit they're talking about?"
Her voice carried clearly.
"Awoo!"
The wolf demon seemed to have been greatly insulted, letting out a deafening roar that swept over the area, stirring up the sand and stones on the ground.
It was a warning to this ignorant ant!
However, Yu Luo's smile deepened.
Facing the stench of the wind, she spoke again, each word clear and distinct.
"Don't you know that my whole family are believers in the mountain god?"
"If you've got the guts, then eat me!"
"If you're incompetent, then get out!"
"..."
The wolf demon's roar abruptly ceased.
Its one eye blinked blankly.
The thugs hiding in the bushes were completely petrified.
What's going on here? An unarmed scholar is provoking a man-eating demon?
