The main hall of the Kong family residence.
A fine rosewood eight-immortal table was almost smashed to pieces by a burly man.
"Outrageous! Outrageous!"
Kong Tai, the head of the Kong family, was dressed in a crimson brocade robe. Seeing the scene before him, he was so angry that his face trembled with rage.
His only son, Kong Qing, lay on the soft couch in the side hall like a lump of mud, his mouth crooked and eyes slanted, with white foam still hanging from the corners of his mouth.
The Kong family consulted all the famous doctors in the city, but they all said that the blood and qi were attacking the heart and the spirit was being damaged, and that it would probably not be long before the patient passed away.
Below the hall sat three or four equally richly dressed men, each with a livid face.
The fat, burly Qian family head's fingers, gripping the teacup, turned white: "Brother Kong, my good-for-nothing son is no better! This is a slap in the face to all the noble families of the Peacock Kingdom!"
"Two enchanting women of unknown origin dared to commit such atrocities in the capital! They must be severely punished!" said the Li family head, who had a goatee, in a sinister tone.
"In my opinion, we should just lock down the entire city and search every house! I refuse to believe they can sprout wings and fly away!"
Kong Tai suddenly waved his hand, his voice as cold as ice: "Search? How can we search! They disappeared without even a clear look! But this matter cannot be left like this! The face of the Kong family is more important than my life!"
A ruthless glint flashed in his eyes: "Pass on my order: arrest every single commoner who saw those two vixens on that street today! Leave no one alive!"
The Qian family head was taken aback, then clapped his hands and laughed: "Brilliant! Brother Kong, what a brilliant idea! Don't those lowly people treat them like goddesses? Let's capture these believers and kill them one by one! I want to see whether those two so-called goddesses will be saved or not!"
"If we don't rescue them, their laughable prestige in the hearts of the people will vanish! If they dare to come to their rescue..." A cold glint flashed in the eyes of the Li family head, "The city defense army has already laid a net, ensuring they will never return!"
The family heads quickly reached an agreement, and smug smiles returned to their faces.
Just then, a butler came running in, looking panicked: "Master! Master, something terrible has happened!"
Kong Tai frowned: "What's the panic! Is the sky falling down?"
"Everyone outside is saying that those two women are divine messengers from Liang Kingdom, sent by the Mountain Goddess!" the steward said breathlessly. "The Zhao and Sun families have also sent messengers to say that our Peacock Kingdom was able to survive the Black Qi Disaster entirely thanks to the Mountain Goddess's protection, and that we must never repay kindness with enmity and become enemies with the Tianyu Mountain Goddess!"
"Bullshit!" Kong Tai kicked over the chair next to him. "They're just two ordinary people. How could they possibly be related to the Mountain Goddess? Besides, the deity is far away in Liang Kingdom. How could she possibly know what happened here? A bunch of idiots, do they really think that being would stand up for a few ordinary people?"
No sooner had he finished speaking than a servant rushed in from the Qian family head's side to report, with much the same content, and even an additional sentence: "Master, the old master of the Sun family said that his family will no longer get involved, and has already taken his young master back and placed him under house arrest."
"Spineless wretch!" the Li family head spat.
Kong Tai sneered disdainfully, "A bunch of cowardly trash! It's good that you retreated, so you won't get in my way! My mind is made up, and no one can stop me today! Men, arrest them! Anyone who dares to resist will be killed without mercy! I want to see if that mountain god is more powerful, or if my knife, Kong Tai's, is harder!"
Upon receiving the order, the guards of the Confucius Mansion rushed out immediately.
However, no sooner had they stepped out of the mansion than a middle-aged man, disheveled and with his hair askew, rushed into the main hall like a madman.
"Big brother! Big brother! Stop! Call him back!" The person who came was Kong Tai's cousin, Kong Yuan. He grabbed Kong Tai's arm, his face filled with unprecedented fear.
"Are you crazy?" Kong Tai shoved him away. "Can't you see I'm doing serious business?"
"Serious business? You're digging up the graves of our entire Kong family!" Kong Yuan's voice became shrill and distorted. "I just went to inquire! Brother! Listen to me! At the very moment those two women disappeared, the statue of the mountain god in the East Ward of our capital city burst forth with a golden light that shot into the sky!"
Kong Yuan's words stunned everyone.
Kong Tai's sinister smile froze.
The teacup that the head of the Qian family had just picked up fell to the ground with a crash and shattered into pieces.
The head of the Li family subconsciously reached out to stroke his goatee, but he used too much force and pulled out a few hairs, causing him to shudder in pain, but he was completely unaware of it.
"What, what did you say?" Kong Tai's voice trembled slightly.
"It's true! Absolutely true!" Kong Yuan was so anxious he was almost crying. "Half the city saw it! That golden light was exactly the same as the light emanating from that woman on the street! They weren't divine messengers at all! That being must be the true form of the Mountain Goddess, a deity walking among humans!"
"Gods?" The Qian family head's obese body slumped in the chair.
The expensive armchair groaned under the weight.
The family heads looked at each other, and they could all see the shock and fear in each other's eyes.
They just clamored to use knives to touch the real gods? And to kill the gods' followers to force the gods to appear?
A chill enveloped my entire body.
"Quickly, go investigate! Send more people to investigate!" Kong Tai's voice was already trembling with sobs.
They didn't need to send anyone else; the news quickly spread from all directions.
"Master, Butcher Zhang from the west of the city said he saw it—the temple was shining with golden light!"
"Master, the tailor Li from the south of the city also said..."
"Master, it's true! The god has manifested himself!"
Each message made them instinctively take a step back.
